General Info:

Richardson is a Florida native and attended Eastside High School in Gainesville, just a short drive away from the Gators’ home stadium. He was an excellent dual-threat quarterback, with 37 passing touchdowns and 41 rushing touchdowns during his high school career. He was a rated as a four-star prospect in the 2020 class, committing to Florida over 16 other schools that included Georgia and Penn State.

Richardson redshirted his freshman season after appearing sparingly in four games. He made his first career start the following season, before being handed the full-time starting role by new head coach Billy Napier in 2022. Richardson finished the season with 2,549 passing yards and 26 total touchdowns.

Positional Skills:

Strengths

The first thing that you’ll notice with Richardson is his outstanding arm talent. This ranks amongst the best we’ve seen in recent years, and he will make defenses defend every blade of grass. He generates plenty of velocity with seemingly little effort and is able to comfortably push the ball 60+ yards. What makes this even more impressive is that his arm strength shows no signs of diminishing when he is on the move.

Richardson pairs this arm talent with some electric rushing ability. At 232 lbs it should come as no surprise that he is a tough runner who can pick up the hard yards between the tackles. What sets him apart from most other quarterbacks is that he possesses legitimate long speed to rip off huge gains, as evidenced by his six carries of 40+ yards throughout his college career. Richardson also shows some nice elusiveness to make defenders miss in the open field.

Whilst his tools are outstanding, Richardson is far more than a project quarterback. Despite his lack of starting experience he already shows some impressive traits that translate well to the pro game. He is outstanding at navigating congested pockets to keep plays alive. He is also a competent processor who is able to quickly diagnose coverage and react to post-snap rotations in order to find weak spots.

Weaknesses

The biggest weakness to Richardson’s game is his accuracy. Whilst he will often make the right read, his ability to consistently hit his receiver in stride left plenty of big plays on the table. Richardson completed just 53% of his passes in 2022. For context, this ranked 121st of 128 quarterbacks with at least 200 dropbacks.

These accuracy issues stem almost entirely from Richardson’s poor lower body mechanics. His footwork in particular is poor and will need plenty of work in order for him to reach his potential at the NFL. Richardson does not throw from a consistent base and will needlessly bounce on his toes whilst in the pocket. He is also prone to making throws without even attempting to set his feet.

Fit with the Packers:

Whilst Richardson’s accuracy issues are a concern, he possesses the unteachable quarterback traits that success in the NFL relies upon. When you pair that with some impressive processing skill in his first year as a starter there is a lot to like about his game.

The Aaron Rodgers situation is set to dominate the Packers’ offseason once again and if he leaves for pastures new, Green Bay would be wise to consider another quarterback. Jordan Love has shown promise but remains something of an unknown quantity. He is also heading into the last year of his rookie deal.

Adding some competition in the form of Richardson would not be a bad idea at all. He certainly comes with his risks, but he also offers the highest upside of any quarterback in this year’s draft. That’s the kind of thing that is worth gambling on.

I have a sneaky suspicion Rodgers Gute etc already have the answerer. Why would Rodgers Gute or anyone else involved share that with the media.

I find it almost impossible to believe he will be back in Green Bay, and I also feel that their is no way he will retire.

Whoever the teams Rodgers has advised as he is willing to go to gut and their GM's are discussing value etc., money .

I bet we hear an announcement for a trade by Friday but definitely before march 15th

So if Rodgers retires.
We get to waste another pick on a back-up QB?
That will help your super-bowl chances.
Another #1 pick for a back up.
Good Job Gutey.

Just re-watched the Pack vs Dallas. The 3rd and one "hero ball" shot to Watson for the TD in Qtr #one; the 3rd and 4, "hero ball" deep to Watson where he slowed down and misread the ball, missed the TD; the Amari Rodgers fumbled punt return; the debut of Nixon@ PR; the 4th and 7 fire ball to Watson for the TD;Walker is the chaser, but cannot stop the Inside runs; Jenkins has trouble with bull rushes; Bhak in perfect form; Two Time outss w/ 1:30 on the clock and LaFleur goes run...run..then pass on 3rd down and incomplete kills the clock. That moment Rodgers ripped him for cause, "run the fu..ing ball" Off to OT. Defense stops with Jaire's breakups; ALL-PRO game; 3rd and One, Fire ball to Lazard on a slant " Over The Middle"...not enough SPEED to score, but FG range for Crosby. Broke the losing streak. The Choir looking for the tanking for draft position. Now we see who the fans represent.

"Adding some competition in the form...." If Rodgers is gone I agree--but not in the first round! The Packers should be looking to sign a veteran backup with a decent track record if this the case. Mariota might be a good candidate, having worked with MLF before.

So you want a veteran for Love.
But didn't want one to back up Rodgers.

I think a veteran to back up whoever is the starter in 2023 is a good idea. I would recommend Taylor Heinicke

Oh I don't know, BDU, I think if Rodgers goes, they will (and should) draft a developmental backup to Love, especially considering his contract status. Personally, if he miraculously dropped to the third round, I think Tanner McKee is perfect for that role.
I really liked Bo Nix for that, but he's decided to stay in school. He'll probably be one of my crushes next year.

I think Ron Wolf had the right way to do it. You draft one in mid to late rounds in most every draft. You never know when you will need one. He did this even during Favre's heyday. He received decent value down the road on trading them. Brooks, Hasselbeck, Detmer & Brunell all come to mind. TT followed that philosophy, just not as often. It's interesting, I did some research and the two franchises that drafted the most QB's over a 20-30 year period were the Packers and New England. Pittsburgh also drafted a lot of QB's. Although, Gutey hasn't followed that philosophy. It's the most important position in all sports, so why wouldn't you?

Things are a lot different in the NFL than they were in Ron Wolf's day. There used to be a ton more offseason time to work on developing young QBs. That's not true anymore after the 2011 CBA.

Detmer left in free agency after playing (not starting) 7 games in 4 years
Brunell got them a 3rd and a 5th rounder (he was drafted in the 4th)
Hasselbeck got them a switch in order in the first round with SEA and an added 3rd rounder
Brooks got them a 3rd rounder after one year in GB (he was a 4th rounder)

So I'm not sure they got that much out of these guys. Most of them barely played in GB as the starter was firmly in place.

Same with Thompson and Gutey's years. The starter is firmly in place; there 's very little time in the offseason to develop young QBs and there's plenty of other needs on the roster. So maybe that's why they haven't drafted more QBs. The one time Gutey did take a chance and move into position to get a guy he thought might be the future, the fans hated him for it.

It's funny, b/c NE and PIT also had starters firmly in place for years on end.

My personal opinion: these are some draft prospects that, to me, just “feel” like Packers players.this isn’t based on anything except personal opinion:

WR: Quentin Johnston, Cedric Tillman
TE: Michael Mayer
OT: Peter Skoronski
DT: Keeanu Benton, Karl Brooks
Edge: Lukas Van Ness, Myles Murphy
LB: Jack Campbell
S: Brian Branch, Jordan Battle

Oh yeah. A couple of WRs and a TE that his holiness can ignore and complain about until maybe mid-season.

This is so wrong. Rodgers worked with the rookies and both Watson and Doubs had good to great rookie seasons, more affected by their time lost to injuries than anything else.

Yes, Skoronski sounds like a Packer player, just given the name.

Also, does anyone remember Wisconsin’s safety John Torchio? He could be a late round/UDFA steal for whichever team gets him.

He's a sleeper for a FS position. Knows the Game. Plays to the Ball. Trained by Leonard.

Wow, it sounds like this guy could give Mahomes , Barrows and Allen a run for their money at the top tier of QBs once he's taught proper footwork. Could be an exciting player to watch.
