All Signs Lead to 13: Wicks Time

Dontayvion Wicks could be the perfect answer to the player Green Bay lost in Romeo Doubs

The Green Bay Packers always have a plan. Letting Romeo Doubs out of Green Bay is part of it. Whether it is due to a crowded receiving room, with Christian Watson now healthy and playing tremendous football through mid to late 2025 season. Or Jayden Reed proving to be a true YAC receiver, perhaps 1st round pick Matthew Golden showing flashes of a potential WR1 eventually.

I tend to think it is all of that, but the confidence in a similar receiver already being in house was a reason that stood out more than the rest. Of the now three seasons Jordan Love has been the Green Bay Packers starting quarterback, two of them saw Romeo Doubs lead the receiving core in targets (’23, ’25). In 2024 however, Dontayvion Wicks would lead the room (76 TGTS).

With Romeo Doubs now gone, all signs point to Wicks taking on a bigger role, and potentially ready for the career ascending year. Wicks hasn’t had any incredible seasons yet, but then again, neither has Green Bay during the time Love has been quarterback.

Among the things that made Doubs so good, was his ability to seperate on footwork, and reliable hands that came back to the football and trusted his hands during high pressure situations, and defenders closing in. Characteristics that Dontayvion Wicks has also flashed in his young career.

In terms of generating separation, Wicks in the 2024 season would rank in the top five of the NFL overall in terms of separation across three separate platforms and graders. I believe with Doubs now gone, Love will quickly try to find a similar blanket that offer similar abilities, Wicks could be that guy.

Drops have certainly been part of the issue with Wicks thus far, but with so many mouths to feed in one room, the few targets only shine a brighter light on the mishaps when the opportunities aren’t as rich. The 2023 5th round pick out of Virginia resembles a lot of a young Davante Adams when he first entered the league.

A 2nd round pick out of Fresno State, Adams also experienced frustrations in his first 2-3 years with big drops, loudly expressed in frustration from quarterback Aaron Rodgers at the time. It would only make Adams better, and the big leap took place in Adams 4th season in the offense. Adams would record his first 100+ reception, and 1,000+ yard season in his career.

Green Bay has a surplus of talent in their current receiving room, with Doubs or without him. However, they have not seen the production from a player like Adams since he left. Going into the 2026 season, an opportunity arises for each member of the room. Romeo Doubs 85 targets in the 2025 season will need to be directed elsewhere, and don’t forget a top 5 Tight End talent in the league in Tucker Kraft hungry to get back to where he left off.

Like the big 4th down reception to convert a first down for a Packers win on Thanksgiving Day at Detroit, Dontayvion Wicks could be someone who has been waiting for an opportunity for a bigger seat at the table. What better opportunity than seeing your leading receiver depart.

Wicks will enter his 4th season next fall, a year where leaps have been proven to happen before.

I agree, Wicks will be the guy to "replace" Doubs, in the line up. We also have Savion Williams and Melton, who seem to get few mentions, as replacements, for Doubs. Golden, being the #1 pick, last draft, should be the front runner, but I want to see him on the outside with Watson, on the other side. Two deep threats for Love plus Wicks, Reed Williams and Melton anywhere on the field.

Apparently, Wickes name has come up frequently with teams inquiring his trade status. We have next man up guys behind him that could easily replace him, In fact 2 bigger WRs on the practice squad in Will Shepard & Isaiah Neyor. Shepard is similar speed as Wickes but has much better hands. A late round draft replacement could be an option too, I like J Sturdivant-Florida alot as a late round guy.

If GB is actively looking to trade Wickes, they should be calling the Giants, who have a big need at WR this year, and try to trade for Kaivon Thibodaux, former first round draft pick who has been rumored as a trade candidate for 2 years. The Giants are loaded @ Edge rusher but lost 2 of their top 3 WRs in free agency. GB could take from their WR strength and fill a weakness need at Edge. As trade bait, Thibodaux is said to be available for a later round pick anyway.

Just as we did with the St Juste trade, we could strengthen the Edge position group that just lost 2 guys that played alot of snaps and only lose a 3rd string WR. It's surely worth asking about.

Thibodeaux is playing on his 5th year option--that adds about $11M to the cap after subtracting Wicks.

“Just as we did with the St Juste trade“ …. Pretty sure St-Juste was a free agent signing.

Pack has been pretty solid with wide receiver depth over the years. If Watson can stay healthy, that’s a potent weapon to go along with Reed, Wicks, Golden, Williams, etc…Skyy Moore/Melton are solid WR6/ ST options. Losing Romeo hurts, but I think they still have guys that have such good get off quickness. Devante, Doubs were special in that regard……but golden and wicks have that type of get off ability.

Agree with others that Kraft could be Love’s go to. Hopefully he comes back strong and healthy. He is what makes the offense go up to another level. Also agree that we need better than Musgrave as our number 2TE.

I like Thibodaux. I think he’s a poor man’s Parsons.
I’d give a 3nd rndr (maybe a 2nd?) for him in. NY second.

If you watched the tapes of Savion Williams in college - he has to prove he can catch the ball. Even though he did nothing but run straight up into traffic last year, he's supposed to be real threat with the ball in his hands - "in his hands" being the operative question.

I like the precedent of Davante stepping up in year four.
I like the ability of Wicks to get separation.
I like the tape from the Lions game last Thanksgiving.
I like the prospect of our players getting appreciably better, such as Wicks, Van Ness, Morgan . . .
***
Do we trade either Wicks or Reed if we get a truly substantial player in return?
Maybe that's not so urgent after a good free agency period in which we filled in some of our weaker positions.
However, if Wicks becomes a force, we'd have to pay him a lot over a few years with a new contract next offseason, or let him go like we did with Doubs.
Then again, maybe we keep both Wicks and Reed for next season as insurance against injuries to the WR corps, and to go for a title.

If Watson’s salary expectations are high, with his durability issues, would you consider trading him instead of Wicks or Reed? With what happened to Parsons, I’m reluctant to have big $$ tied up in Watson.

I agree with you, Bruce: I think the Packers would be wise to wait until later in the season to see how he holds up to work on an extension for Watson, if they even try. WR is a high-attrition position, so you need to have depth there.

I hadn't thought of trading Watson, because he has had so many big catches from Love.
I would reluctantly consider trading him due to his durability issues and the big money it would take to re-sign him to long-term contract.
Golden might be his replacement.
With our elite corps of wide receivers, the Packers are in the enviable but delicate situation of evaluating each as far as talent and character, durability and cost -- and predicting who may truly elevate his game going forward.
***
Out of Watson, Wicks, and Reed, are there any worth that sizeable second contract? It would be sad to see all three leave the Packers, but the salary cap is a harsh limitation.
As a recent article at CheeseheadTV addressed, paying a quarterback in the range of $50-$60 million seems to eat up a lot of dollars for the entire team.
It seems Willis is getting a third of what Love is paid (although the way contracts are manipulated can make such comparisons confusing).
Would it be better to have kept Willis so as to be able to sign Watson and/or Wicks and/or Reed?
I'm a big fan of Love, yet not sure of the answer.

IMO Wicks and Reed are gone.
Watson, Golden, and Williams = winning
TE has replaced the need for either.
Kraft will be Loves go to target.
And Gute should draft another TE this draft.
It's deep and talented.

Agreed: the lack of capable blocking at TE was exposed after Kraft got hurt, which put Kinnard on the field more than he should've been. Using a 6th OL outside of short yardage takes playmakers off the field.

Well Stockholder, my FA TE crush, Charlie Kolar, flamed out when his "projected salary" ballooned from $1.7 million annually to $7.7 million. That's a big discrepancy. I would love a veteran TE to stabilize the room, maybe Zach Ertz for cheap.

There are some good ones in the draft that GB should be interested in. I like
Sam Roush-Stanford
Tanner Koziel-Houston
Marlin Klein-Michigan
Jack Endries-Texas
Joe Royer-Cincinnati
Nate Boerkircher-Texas A&M

surprisingly no Iowa TEs this year

Wow a LB that high? Isn't Stukes a slot CB? We need a boundary CB not a slot. Bentley is a good TE choice. It would be awesome if we could land a couple more picks in the 5th & 6th rounds so we could fill more needs.

I really think we should draft a CB with our first pick, and I think we could even move back 15-20 spots and still get a potential starter. Guys like Will Lee, Davison Igbinosun, Malik Muhammed, Charlie Demmings, and Devin Moore will be in that area. A little later Daylen Everette and Ephesians Prysock could help immediately.

LB is not a Top 4 need this year and more likely a choice in the 2027 draft when we have those extra mid round picks. The LB I like this year is Kendall Daniels-Oklahoma. He is 6'5 245 and runs 4.6. And he has played Safety at that size so he has very strong coverage skills @ LB, which we really lack. He could land in the late 5th or 6th round where we could target him

He is a slot/Nickel CB. But with hobbs gone
No one backs up Bufford if he has to play safety.
CB picks will be a development no matter what .

The Cbs will be there.
They're either too slow, or can't tackle.
But anything is possible with Gute.

The colts traded their problem for speed.
I'm saying that if Gute takes the BPA @52.
It will be his pick ILBs
That will solve next year's problem and
this year. ( if injuries happen. )
Which was always a problem in the Rodgers era.
Daniels is ok.
There will be a run on edge players before 52.

It's my hope that the offense evolves away from 2025 and Doubs' role in particular rather than just trying to pigeonhole someone into that spot. Reed seems to be mostly an 11 personnel guy and his snaps will be mostly adjusted by how much the Packers go heavy. Savion Williams will eat into Reed's gadget snaps if he can stay healthy.

There needs to be an effort to get Golden more involved. Watson at this point is the guy besides Kraft who scares defenses, so he needs to stay on the field. Frankly, Kraft's ADOT was lousy...they need to feature him more (split him out, which eats into Wicks' opportunities) and use him less in traffic or he'll just keep getting beat up. The Packers drafted two WR early last year knowing that the depth of the WR room was turning over and wasn't for long. With the FA moves the Packers have made, I expect they'll draft a Wicks-type WR and/or developmental Y-type TE late.

Luke keeps pointing back to an elite WR (Adams) as a comparison, which always seems to go poorly for a role player like Wicks. Aside from fighting the football there are some qualities that Wicks brings--ability to win off the LOS, in particular--that are reminiscent of Adams. Wicks is really that only guy who seems to consistently win early in the route and there will be a role for him in the offense, but it might take injuries to get him on the field outside of rotational snaps.

"Kraft really scares defenses, so he needs to stay on the field." 100% Dobber, and that's why we need another TE who is a difference maker, because Musgrave isn't one. There are some good ones who will be available @ our #160 pick too.

Good point. Our receivers are all different and have unique talents. The coaches need to acknowledge that and get the most out of them. Wicks has been here for three years, and they should know how to use him by now. I'm not so sure they know how to get the most out of Matthew Golden, though. I think that will be the bigger challenge this year, but there will be a bigger payoff if they figure it out.

Wicks may have a bigger role as long as he proves he can catch the ball routinely and that the drops from a couple of seasons ago were an aberration. Otherwise, the ball will probably spread around more evenly. The player we really want to see break out is Golden with his good hands and ability to generate YAC on his own. If Golden proves to be the weapon many of us think he is, then this is the guy you want to be feeding the ball more to. The Packers haven't had a 1000-yard receiver since Adams left, and maybe Golden can change this.

The drops have been a problem for Wicks since his senior season at Virginia.

Its is true "In 2024 however, Dontayvion Wicks would lead the room (76 TGTS)."

However, he also was third in the NFL (along with Reed!) with 9 drops. All 9 were deemed catchable.

Wicks was looking to be a day two...maybe even a late first round selection after his incredible Junior season at Virginia. He decided to return for his senior year and dropped balls everywhere. However 2022 was the year of U of VA shooting, killing 3 members of the football team and it clearly affected Wicks.

He seemed to have cured the drop disease as a rookie in '23 then relapsed with drops in '24. He again cured the drops in '25. If he can avoid the trend of no drops, drops, no drops, drops and no drops....and finally turn in a consecutive season of no drops...look out!

Wicks had everyone comparing him to Adams as a rookie based on his ability to separate. The separation was there in his second year but his number of drops negated his progress. Last year health was the issue. This coming season to earn an extension he needs to stay on the field and put it all together.

Reed is their most talented all around receiver and perfect for the slot, he also needs to stay on the field and is the best bet to be the chains mover that Doub's was on 3rd downs.

It may be the case in 2027 the team can't extend both of them because of the CAP but based on Golden stepping up his game in year 2 or not and the fact that Williams is so raw (may be more of an athlete than
WR) they will have to keep either Wicks or Adams going forward if not both. Melton is a one trick pony (only a deep threat) but can play DB and special teams as well as being a team player.

Watson, Golden, and Reed are going to most likely be the three WRs on the field for the majority of the snaps. I like Wicks- alot- but he's likely #4 in the pecking order in 2026, regardless of his seniority over Golden.

Reed is going to remind people who he is again in 2026. That kid is a beast in the slot, and now the Packers have two legitimate perimeter threats with top notch speed on the outside to open it all up on any given down. With a TE like Kraft who can punish you as a receiver and also open up blocking lanes, I just can't see the Packers going four wideouts too frequently. That will relegate Wicks to spot duty is my assumption.

Watson, Golden, and Reed should be one of the most explosive young receiver trios in the league, with Wicks a terrific fourth option. Fix the offensive line, and Love should be lighting defenses up. The problem is LaFleur. I have zero faith that this supposed offensive genius knows how to maximize the talent on this roster. Too often, the offense looks predictable and overly cautious when it should be attacking. Even opposing coaches have hinted at it—I remember Robert Saleh saying they basically knew what the Packers would run. I’ll never understand why the front office rewarded him with another contract after repeated amateurish performances in the playoffs and that embarrassing five-game losing streak to end the season. I know people point to his overall record, but that doesn’t mean much if the team repeatedly comes up short when it matters most. The sooner we’ve seen the last of him on the sideline, the better.

All signs LL ... Agree, point to Wicks as next year stater opposite Watson, he can separate early and is a much bigger target than Gold.
In todays defensive pressure packages you need a bigger target on the edge who can become a quick option to coincide with your all-world TE. I get it posters love Gold, and his future is bright but the packers have Watson to stretch the field they need another intermediate route runner with some size who can take the punishment that goes along with those routes. P.S If you watched the clips provided above Im loving the power punches and two hand shoves on rushing DL by Sean Rhyan, ( his rookie year at center ) when he hits people they move. When you look at the RIDICULOUS money the Raiders payed to get center Tyler Linderbaum 3yr 81 million dollars I believe the Packers got a deal when they signed Rhyan.

It’s pretty hard to compare rhyan’s contract to Tyler Linderbaum‘s.. Tyler has been one of the leagues most dominant centers since stepping foot in the league- four years of dominant play. Rhyan has been a wad of gum jammed into a hole in the hull of the ship and covered with duct tape for about half a year at center.

I just looked up PFF's player grade for Rhyan in 2025- take that for whatever, if anything, it's worth- but they listed Rhyan as #31 out of 40 qualifying Centers in 2025 (worst pass blocking grade of the 40 qualifying centers with a grade of 38.5, 17th out of 40 in run blocking with a respectable 66.7 grade.)

I'm not sure that I'd call it competent. Based on just watching his play in 2025, I thought he was below average. I'm willing to root for his improvement- he was thrown in to center without much warning- but I wasn't sold on him as being a second contract guy at his regular position of RG, either- I thought he had to answer some questions in 2025 to be considered for a 2nd contract at starter wages. Clearly, the Packers feel differently, I hope they're right, and truly hope Rhyan improves, but I'm skeptical.

Some think Wicks is the second coming of Devante Adams. Others think he is too slow and drops too many balls. The reality is he is somewhere in between, To be specific : mediocre. At best,he is our fourth best receiver. I think Skyy has greater potential, not to mention Savion. We really don't need Wicks and it is probably a good problem to have as WR is once again a position of strength.. .
I think we need a CB and another OL. I am not sure if Morgan is the answer at OT., Gute made a real blunder choosing Morgan over CB Cooper DeJean in the draft. Time will tell. I do like the new free agents Gute has brought in.

"I think Skyy has greater potential, not to mention Savion." Really?

Skyy Moore has shown next to nothing as a go to WR catching just 48 passes from Mahomes in 3 years for KC and was traded (unloaded) to the Niners along with a 2027 7th rounder in exchange for a the Niners 2027 6th rounder...basically a giveaway. He caught a whopping 5 passes for SF last year.

Where he does show potential is in the return game. He's not a Packer due to his WR skills. He was hired to return kicks. He's not a lock to make the team either.

Williams might be a good WR but nothing special yet as a 2nd round rookie, oft injured. IMO, that pick should have been a DL player.

Wicks is currently a better receiver than both Skyy and Savion.

I was excited by Savion Williams as a flier prospect- he's intriguing if thing go just right. With that being said, and understanding full well that he's a huge project to get up to NFL speed.. the few times he had opportunities he didn't flash anything, and it was disappointing.

Lots of time for him to catch on- I expected he'd be a full 3 year project- but I really hoped to have seen a little something from him somewhere along the line in 2025.. I didn't.
