Aaron Rodgers speaks with Jets, teams await decision

Events are in motion that point toward a trade of the long time Packers quarterback

From Trey Wingo (who as most will remember, was the one to break the Randall Cobb news two years ago)

This conversation could only have taken place if the Packers had given permission, as Rodgers is still under contract in Green Bay.

This obviously points to a potential trade of the four time most valuable player. The Jets are undoubtedly trying to gauge just how "all in" Rodgers intends on being and how much longer he might envision himself playing. Whatever compensation the Jets would offer would undoubtedly be tied to Rodgers commitment level.

There's also the possibility that this news could bring another team or two into the conversation, if they feel Rodgers is really going to be available.

One important thing to note is that Rodgers apparently has yet to make an actual decision about whether or not he even wants to play, leaving both teams awaiting final word from the quarterback on his future.

Whether he decided to stay, go, or retire, we needed the forward movement desperately.

Ohhhhh, sizzle, SHIZZLE!!!!! It's actually happening.

I thought he'd retire after last season's debacle. Great!!!! I'm all for his being traded for whatever compensation Gutekunst can get.

Lips through the zipper "Shoot the Moon!" vibes...

A very big part of the Packers being catapulted into a position of contention again post AR trade involves players, draft capital & future cap flexibility.

Cap room alone, via the retirement path, certainly helps, but the added players/picks via trade compensation are a boon to the Green Bay Packers' plans in starting this new era.

It's starting now, as we speak. Wonderful.

Finally!! Got some good news. With Carr signing with New Orleans, the Jets have no other option than to pursue Rodgers.

So 1st and 2nd round picks this year and 1st round next year.

And the suggestion to move Douglas to safety. Here are my draft picks and free agent predictions.

Draft picks for first three rounds: DL, EDGE, WR, TE and CB. Don't want a S, not much talent anyhow. And a fourth round QB

Free agents: TE Hurst, WR Hardman and S from KC. Resign Nixon. Resign Nijman for Backup.

And the Packers will do just as good or better than last year.

The realists on this page will be secure in knowing that Aaron Rodgers will milk this for every ounce of attention it can provide.

Logic says that the Jets hired Nathaniel Hackett to entice Aaron to join him. Occam's razor and all that.

Let's all just hope this is the first step in rebuilding the house in GB.

Rodgers drives narrative constantly.

He has been spinning public relations with selective and deceitful language in his post games, locker room interviews, and pressers for over a decade.

He actively works to promote an image and persona with selective media outlets. There's a reason he works through semi-exclusive recurring media appearances. At one time, it was Jason Wilde. Today, it's Pat McAfee. And, apparently, Aubrey Marcus. These are controlled environments where Rodgers gets to drive the message. That's quite literally PR.

The narrative that "Rodgers is an attention seeker" is funny to me. I'm sure he loves the attention, and he definitely trolls people with some stuff he says. But the whole he does nothing but seeks attention is comical to me. This page has been talking about Rodgers every day since the season has ended. There have been I have no idea how many articles about Rodgers. And then when the articles aren't written about Rodgers, he is brought up in the comment section. So is that Rodgers seeking attention?

I definitely believe part of the reason why the Jets brought in Hackett was to lure Rodgers. But I think that was a big part. Hackett has a good track record as an OC.

No, he’s not an attention seeker at all. That’s why he goes on Tank Top’s show every week, did a 90 minute podcast the other day, dates every starlet and social media darling on earth, makes sure he’s on the Jumbotron at every Bucks game, and hosts Jeopardy for a week. He does all those things to avoid media attention.

So basically everything he does is because he is an attention seeking whore?

Going on a weekly talk show, doing a podcast, dating women, forces the bucks to put him on the jumbotron at bucks games, goes to bucks games, hosted jeopardy for a week. All that stuff he does to seek attention?

Ridiculous. In 20+ years of being of single dating age and at least 15+ of those being a famous athlete he has dated a couple of actresses and another famous athlete. That's a total of 3 people. Brady dated an actress and she had his child and then he married a supermodel. Plenty of NFL stars date models and actresses. You think HE makes himself be on the Jumbotron? He's a famous person, and it's the media that creates all that. I think it's awesome he was on Jeopardy. I think he might have considered taking the host's job if they'd offered.

Would you rather have the lack of authenticity of a Russell Wilson, who says nothing, or the religious mutterings of Tebow? Not me. Plenty of guys go on Pat's show; plenty of guys have podcasts. They are allowed to be human beings with personalities and opinions. I find Rodgers interesting and engaging. If you listen to his perspective, it makes it hard to hate him, as so many "fans" seem to on this site. And complaining about Rodgers making himself available to the media on a media site is beyond hypocritical. That's what gives the media something to write about.

I don't care what he does off the field but I do care that he always puts himself above everyone and the team. He has really become an egotistical tool in the last 5 years. We need someone to lead our team with the idea that the team and its goals are paramount.
Rodgers brings it on himself with most fans because of how he acts.

If you believe what he's selling, it makes it hard to hate him. If you compare his deeds and actions to what he's selling, it makes it measurably easier to strongly dislike him.

Rodger talks a mean game. His actions often do not back up the presentation.

At this point Rodgers is a cancer to the Packers organization and the players. He has been a great player but this is the Green Bay Packers not the Aaron Rodger Packers. No player should hold up a billion dollar franchise. It would have been way better to trade him last year but we can still salvage a really good deal with the competion this move will bring.

I don't get it, either.

Full disclosure? I remain a fan, and consider him the best QB (of course, I also see a strong case for Brady and a budding one...too soon...for Mahomes) of this whole SB Era.
Except for Covid policy (where I disagree almost completely with him) I find him to be a thoughtful, interesting guy who handles his responsibilities on and off the field quite professionally.

Okay, I don't see the whole attention-seeker thing. As arguably a top 2 or 3 name in the biggest sports league in the country, he's automatically big news. But yeah, other than the McAfee show, he's about the most reclusive "attention seeker" in history.

Pettine gets fired after the Vikings collapse, go 0-6 in the division, and finish in last place.

I don't think Rodgers is driven by revenge in the way that Favre was. Rodgers legacy in Green Bay is that he was a great QB who didn't go to the Super Bowl for the last 12 years, including some years with some pretty good teams around him.

Now, he can change the ending. Go to the Jets. He's the missing piece. He'll instantly transform the Jets to a probable playoff team....unless he's declined since the end of last season. So that'll just be another chapter of his awesomeness.

After he retires, I hope he returns to Green Bay and I hope he's well received.

In the sense that he’s actively investigating his options, yes, because that indicates movement and active engagement beyond introspection. That’s a necessary precursor to a resolution, but also to getting an informed decision and thus a chance of true buy in, whether it’s to retire, to return or to move.

Now we may see if there’s a market beyond the Jets that is if interest to him I expect. Then we find out if there’s a real interest in a new team or if this is just curiosity. Perhaps, given Carr he could even see the chance to improve on his contract. who knows. It could equally be that he just wants to make sure there’s nothing out there that motivates him to return or move. At least the wheels are turning.

I'm all good with what you said in the first paragraph. It is movement and we are needing to move forward. At least we have something new to talk about compared to the last however long when everyone has been regurgitating the same stuff day after day.

At this point who knows what is going to happen. If Rodgers decides he wants to play and where he wants to play. If the Packers want him back or want him gone. What teams are interested in trading for him. And what those teams will be willing to give up for him. There are a lot of dominos that need to fall.

While of course there is no way I know anymore than anyone else I keep saying there is absolutely zero chance AR is retiring in the next few years. Zero chance! If people have really paid attention to AR over the years you should understand how he operates. Basically, he is so talented he tends to coast and loses his edge after awhile. It is human nature! He thrives on controversy & conflict to motivate him. In a weird way I understand that!

Rodgers needed the green room experience. He needed the Favre experience. He needed Jordan Love being drafted. Now with reports of the Packers being disgusted with him for a myriad of reasons (combined with what is happening behind closed doors) Rodgers is fired up.

Make no doubt about it Rodgers is coming back for a number of years and that isn't taking into account his guaranteed salary, and constantly being in the news feeding his ego. Because of the offseason news reports I believe wherever Rodgers ends up playing he is going to have a great season because of his reputation being tarnished & no doubt him feeling he has been wronged by the Packer brass.

I agree with you that he isn't retiring.

I will add another one that is very underrated that Rodgers needed and for them to draft Brian Brohm in the 2nd round. Even though Brohm was not good, just the fact that they used a 2nd round pick on a QB I believe did motivate him or add a chip to his shoulder.

When you say coming back for a number of years, are you saying he is coming back to GB or to football and whatever team?

RC,
Everything points to AR leaving the Pack, but boy "he is a complicated fella." He also is extremely shrewd & likes messing with everyone.

Which means who the hell knows where he ends up? I do sorely hope it isn't with the Packers because I believe for many reasons the Packers need to move forward with the Love era. Add some talented new WR's and TE's and let them all grow with Love for the next 4+ years.

Most people are saying Rodgers might play another year or two, but I believe he very well might play considerably longer. Of course health makes a big part of that equation. Rodgers loves football and he is talented. I simply think he has everything and is terribly bored and desperately needs a fresh start somewhere else.

Most think he has it all together but he is a mess. Look at his personal life and his relationships with females & need for constant change. Look at his constant need to do off the wall stuff like going to India to meet with the Dali Lama. Going to Peru for psychedelics and ayahuasca. Dating the alleged witch and her off the wall philosophy. Going into a 4 day darkness retreat. Without football which is the one stabilizing constant in his life Rodgers is lost. He gave up his family.

I believe he needs change and new challenges to keep his interest. Rodgers will keep playing for quite a few years if healthy and performance remains at an acceptable level.

Yes, the signs are saying that he will be leaving. With reports upon reports. So we will see. I'm not making any predictions because what is the point of that at this time. I will just sit and watch how it plays out.

I am fine with Rodgers leaving IF the Packers feel Love is the guy. I don't feel that it would be wise for them to get rid of Rodgers because they don't like Rodgers. I just feel that they should only make this move if they feel really good about Love and he is ready to be the guy.

One would think if they actually are trading Rodgers they would never do that unless they believe Love is ready be foolish otherwise...right? Gutey lose his job & the Packers look bad all around.

The only twist to that would be if Rodgers is the one forcing a trade behind the scene & the Packers have no choice. Subsequently, Love whether ready or not is QB1. I don't believe it is the latter.

But then you hear the reports about the Packers being disgusted with Rodgers and stuff like that. To me that isn't the reason to trade him. It should be more based on them feeling good where Love is at and then make the move, because they will feel it won't be that big of a drop off.

I hear you but not sure why everyone always assumes there is going to be a drop off if Love takes over. I'm being optimistic and strongly believe if Love is healthy his 2023 stats may very well be an upgrade over Rodgers 2022 stats.

I believe Love is going to inject some excitement to the offense, particularly if the Pack picks someone named Dalton Kincaid, or a Quentin Johnston, or a Luke Musgrave, as examples.

This is definitely a die hard page. Its why I'm here and have been here for a long time!

But the last few years on social media and on this page have unfortunately changed. People are more combative. Someone can't just state their opinion and people just read it and move on. People now have to go and disagree with them and argue with them. And on this page Rodgers is a hot button topic for many.

No more than Favre was, perhaps even a little less. For the most part, one can at least have a conversation here to some extent. There will always be strong feelings and disagreement—that’s the nature of being an informed and committed supporter. That is better than other sites I find. For that reason, I’ve largely withdrawn for now from others, but, as we have discussed, there’s no avoiding the QB issue because it touches virtually all others.

This page always had its moments. It varies according to how salient the issues are. We’ve had a few: Drayton and Barry being recent issues, that evoke strong feelings as did the circumstances of the two Championship losses. I’d say that’s natural. Over that time, most of us continue to debate and find ourselves agreeing and not with different people at times. It’s natural, for the only reason we are here is that we care about and are interested in the Packers and football.

I think there are a bunch of us that will root for Rodgers wherever he goes or if he stays (like Favre before him), unless he's playing against the Packers.

It's fair to debate weather it's better if he stays or goes. It seems CHTV and other places have come to the conclusion that it's better for both the Packers and Rodgers to start a new phase.

It's always sad to end an era. This one is in its waning moments regardless of what actually happens now. We have to look and hope for an exciting new era after this one ends.

I try not to be combative and like it when people try to put me in my place and teach me, either with thumbs or actual knowledge. I'm glad people respond with all their Packer fan emotions. It keeps me coming back.

RC, I’ve been a supporter of keeping Rodgers for years, because he gives us the best chance of winning a SB. Whether that has happened or not, he still gives us a good chance to win every single game. The problem is the only times we won the SB is when we have a top 5 Defense and as hard as Green Bay has tried to achieve that they have failed. I do know they have tried based on the emphasis of drafting top picks.

Now, I don’t really care, I’m tired of the annual drama, just want closure so we can move on with a rebuild with Love or make another run with Rodgers. Either way, I know how difficult it is to manage and win in the NFL. I try not to critique decisions of our FO, and just want to root for whatever direction GB takes. Too many are overly critical of our FO’s decisions. Of course, those have hindsight to their advantage. The one thing I really know is we are one of the best run Franchises over the past 30 years.

The comp will depend on Rodgers commitment to play for more than one year , would certainly love a 1st and 2 nd plus player/s . 23-1+23-2 plus 24-2 plus player/s would be fine but whatever we get it helps gb move forward and begins the cap healing and brings that fresh new start should bring excitement for all fans at least for me it will Remember many were afraid to move on from farve , but that worked out great and it will again !!

If it’s worth doing, it’s not for the pick but what it frees up and the chance to build the rest of the roster back more quickly. What else we get is a bonus. If we trade him we are admitting that we dug a monstrous hole with that extension. If Rodgers moves it gets us out of that to a considerable extent, though we are still paying a lot now and next year.

It asks the question of how did we commit to something of that magnitude a year ago and now have to admit we are so badly wrong and pray another team saves us. We can’t save ourselves, we are reliant on Rodgers choosing to leave.

If we trade him now, we are admitting that we should have last year. How did Rodgers plus our cap and roster make sense then to the extent that contract suggests in terms of money and ceded control? If we don’t get a large haul, that doesn’t invalidate the trade, but it does raise the stakes for that question.

Lol...Gute might be all about the Green Bay Packers, but that doesn't mean he hasn't made huge mistakes.

Aaron Rodgers is human and makes mistakes, just like you, your spouse, your parents, your kids, etc.
Lets stop with the Aaron Rodgers must be perfect or you'll hate him forever (grow up), while all the others can do no wrong.
Everything is Rodgers fault, amirite?

I have a question for some of you drinking the haterade.

Who has been most responsible for the success of the Packers from 2008 - present.
Murphy? Gute? McGravy? MLF? The towel boy?

Show some respect.

-6 points

croatpackfan's picture

March 07, 2023 at 12:13 pm

There is no person who do or did not make mistakes while he/she working. It is not about making the mistakes, it is about 1. not blaming others for your mistakes, 2. learning from your mistakes, 3. learning from others mistakes, 4. not pointing others when they did mistakes, but trying to help them to overcome those mistakes, 5. not repeating your mistakes.

And, the most important lesson. If you do not want others to mess with your life, do not go public with your life. Keep it private as much as you can.

Also, when you made decisions about your life, try to think about other people your decisions might influence on. It is your life, but you are not alone in this world. And on your path there was many that helped you to grow to the person you are today. If you seek respect, try to give the larger respect to one or ones you seek it from.

That is all I have to say on your post. No hate, no attack, just MHO!

I didn't say Gutekunst hasn't made mistakes. I have never said I hate Aaron Rodgers because he isn't perfect. I like when you insinuate arguments that were never presented. Strawman fallacies seem to be one of your specialties.

Rodgers hasn't shown respect for the Packers since roughly 2017. I will decline to show respect for a man I don't respect.

No way Rodgers is talking to the Jets if he's thinking about retiring.
No way Rodgers is talking to the Jets if he's not open to a trade.
No way Rodgers is talking to the Jets and then ends up playing for the Packers.
No way Rodgers is open to a trade and the deal doesn't get done because of the trade value/terms.

Ok lets start the negotiations. We trade Aaron Rodgers, David Bahktiari, and Darnell Savage for 2023 #1, 2023 #2, 2024 #2, 2024 #3, 2025 #3. We also want Mekhi Becton-OT,
Elijah Moore-WR, Denzel Mims-WR. And trow in Jeremy Ruckert-TE and we have a deal.
Its time to also move on from Bahktiari, too many injuries and it also makes Aaron happier because he has some familiar in New York. The picks speak for themselves, a good haul for us spread out so it doesn't hurt New York much. Becton Moore, and Mims need a change of scenery and the Jets aren' thrilled with any of them, but they were all projected to be stars. We were really hot on Mims and Moore when they were drafted. Neither has don e much with nobody to throw to them. Ruckert was a late 3rd round pick and the 4th TE taken in the 2022 draft so they would be very attached there either. The Jets have made it known how badly they want Rodgers. Lets get it going. Tell me what you think.

I'd be shocked if he was dealt to the Jets.

Despite his flaws, one thing you can say about Rodgers is he doesn't waffle, when he says something, he usually means it and doesn't back track.

Rodgers has always said he wanted to finish his career in Green Bay.

If he went to the Jets, he'd have to convince them he'd be there for at least 2 years, they may even want 3.
Not sure if Rodgers has the passion to play that long.
Championships used to be #1 with him (2008 - about 2017), until he realized it most likely wasn't going to happen in Green Bay.
For sure, when Love was drafted, instead of drafting a player to help a team who was 1 game away from the Super Bowl.
Gute drafted for the future with Love, giving up on that 2019 team.
Gee....maybe that's why Rodgers said.....trade me.
All the while, letting the receiver room deplete in talent.
Coincidence? I don't think so.

I question why Rodgers would want to go to another team, learning a new offense, having to develop rapport with teammates and the team in general, in a short window of time.
For a chance to win the Super Bowl?
Keeping in mind, this is the Jets.
The last time the Jets were in the Super Bowl, Motortrends car of the year was the 1969 Plymouth Road Runner, and gas was 35 cents a gallon.
The same year President Nixon was sworn in.

Maybe something happened in Green Bay that would make him want to leave, idk...regardless.

I've long said, if your going to trade him, you missed the boat, that was 2020/2021 for a Kings ransom.
Then Packer Management tripped over themselves and gave him new guaranteed money for the 2022 and 2023 season....OOPS, more mistakes...i see a pattern of mistakes.

My best guess this last year is that Rodgers stays on this season (his last). They part ways friendly (lessons learned from Farve).
They appease J. Love to sit a 4th year by giving him his 5th year option worth about 20 million guaranteed.

Could i be wrong, hell yes i could be wrong...like that one time back in 2014. 😜

When was the last time he said that on the record?

"Rodgers has always said he wanted to finish his career in Green Bay."

He can always sign a one-day contract and retire a Packer.

He waffled when he badmouthed Gutey and threatened to leave then loved him when he got his buddy Cobb back and they gave him a buzillion dollar contract.

Yeah he isn't always so truthful, just one and a very important instance, the vaccination bullshit lying. But then its never been all about the team or anybody but Rodgers. Get rid of him finally and start over.

When was the last time he said that on the record?

"Rodgers has always said he wanted to finish his career in Green Bay."

Actually he said it on McAfee a few weeks ago.

Paraphrasing:

" I want to finish my career with the Packers, and maybe I have"

I feel like i'm losing brain cells in here. (YES), immediately go click the thumbs down....lol...and grab a cookie if it makes you feel better.

@Dobber....
He said numerous times he wanted to finish his career here, play for one team.
Yes, he's said these things, i'd like to think Packer fans would know that.

Signing a one day contract has nothing to do with what i said.
*************
Rodgers told reporters Thursday that he hopes to still be with the Packers when he turns 40, adding that he wants to finish his career in Green Bay, per ESPN.com's Rob Demovsky:

"For me, I think the longevity is tied to being a Green Bay Packer. I'd like to finish my career in Green Bay." - Rodgers

Rodgers admitted Friday he was surprised and not "thrilled by the pick, necessarily," but he added, "I understand."
Rodgers said during a nearly 40-minute conference call. "Because as much as I feel confident in my abilities and what I can accomplish and what we can accomplish, there are some new factors that are out of my control. And so my sincere desire to start and finish with the same organization...."

Can you do anything for yourself dobber?

Listen close... first, google....Rodgers said he wanted to play his entire career in Green Bay.

Then, check out the links, read it, and look at the dates.
Can you do that?

Who wipes your... for you?

Again, most Packer fans, know this stuff.

Look, no one can make Rodgers do anything. That’s the result of the agreement Murphy handed him last year. If he goes to another , it’s because he chooses to.

There are reasons why moving on from Rodgers or keeping him could be advanced rationally, but this highly emotive crap is just that, and not among them.

Enough Rodgers is divine/diabolical. He’s neither devil nor saint and such emotive depictions just make this personal to him and posters here. They are also devoid of value, predictive or factual.

Well, the Packers have him in the position where he'll either have to retire, or accept a trade. He gets well paid, either way, thanks to the contract agreement. That same agreement also insures the Packers will be compensated if he keeps playing....which I seriously believe he will.

This is about what's best for the team. It seems to me from the front office down to the message boards, there's a sense that we're better off with Love. Of course, they wouldn't feel that way if they knew Love wasn't very good, so that kind of reasoning doesn't wash. They know he's good, and he's ready, and so are they.

So rather than the way we switched from Favre to Rodgers, we're not going to have our former QB throwing crap at the organization. That's a good thing.

He's done in Green Bay, Coldworld. I hope/think we'll be better next year, and if we are, we're going to be in contention for the division title. There's a lot of potential there if we can put it all together.

If the Packers knew Love was good, we wouldn't be having this conversation. The Packers wouldn't have given Rodgers that new deal a year ago.

BTW LH...Rodgers can't retire ...and get paid. That isn't how retiring works.
Unless your name is Ted Thompson.
Hell, Ted got fired and still collected for 3 years, while living down in Texas... 😮

The Packers can’t know if Love is good because they’ve never given him a true test. That is on them. Let’s call it the BrohmFlynn Law. TT believed in Rodgers enough to move Favre but not enough not to pick 2 QBs in the intervening draft, just in case.

75, you have the best avatar

Rodgers has said things in the past, and so have I.

It's this simple: He'll retire or not. If he retires, he forfeits the right to quite a bit of money. If he plays, he gets the money/adulation/fun that goes with it.

So, he will choose not to retire, he'll choose to play, and he'll play for the team that makes the most attractive offer for him. Either way, the 2023 Packers are setting sail, and Rodgers isn't on board.

Maybe you realized he doesn't get paid after posting that.

Whatever it is, it's all good.

As far as the Packers setting sail, lets see what happens, this thing isn't concluded by a report that he talked to the Jets.

If ar plays one more yr than retires it leaves gb with a 64 million dead cap hit in 24 add 20 mil for loves fifth yr option that 84 mil for one position in a restarting year so no now is the time to say thanks for the memories but GOODBYE

Well...lol....MAYBE, Gute and Murphy should have thought of that before offering Rodgers 58.3 million fully guaranteed in 2023.
Who structured that contract, the Easter Bunny, the Packers, or Rodgers?
BTW....i highly doubt that 64 mill number in 2024.
I see about 40 million.

But that doesn't follow the narrative of Packer management doing no wrong...it's Rodgers fault!!

Rodgers could tell the Packers that he's playing another year, and he wants all of his 58.3 million before week one and he won't restructure his deal to help them out.

What can the Packers then do?
Not a damn thing because that's the deal they gave him.

It's not Rodgers fault, him and his agent are smarter than Murphy/Gutee.
Rodgers has been bending Gute and Murphy over for years, but they are too inept and weak to do anything about it.

It’s not Gute, but Murphy and Ball who decide on and negotiate contracts. That aside, there should be lots of questions asked about how a contract of that nature came to be agreed and yet have such a short shelf life. Yes, there are issues behind some if this, undoubtedly.

Rodgers has become complacent & bored. None of us can continue doing the same thing at a high level year in and year out. He needs a new beginning and challenge and I'm sure he realizes that.

I think thats why he came out and praised the

He wanted to retire a packer.
But the internal struggle with a GM
made this personal.
He played hurt.
He still wants to play.

Do you remember all the times Favre stated even when hurt he didn't want to come out of games because it gave his back up an opportunity to take his job?

No doubt this was part of Rodgers reason for continuing to want to play with an 'injured' thumb. What I will never understand between the thumb & the consecutive losses why LeFluer didn't bench AR and play Love. Boggles my mind! If he had the Pack likely would have made the playoffs.

Exactly why LeFluer should share in the blame for how the Packers performed in the first half of the season. The make-up of the starting offensive line was atrocious as was Amari as kick returner! Give blame where blame is due.
