A Fast Start Will Be Critical for the Packers vs the Eagles

Getting off to a fast start will be critical for the Green Bay Packers in their Wild Card playoff game with the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday. In fact, a fast start will be critical for both teams.

Both the Packers and the Eagles have some interesting parallels that make the fast start important. For example, the Packers offense runs through Josh Jacobs, one of their big free agent acquisitions during this past offseason. The Eagles offense runs through Saquon Barkley, who was Philadelphia’s big offseason free agent signing.

Jacobs finished the season with 1,329 yards rushing, good for sixth in the league. He averaged 4.4-yards per carry and ran for 15 touchdowns including one in the final eight games of the season, setting a new Packers record.

Meanwhile, Barkley led the NFL with 2,005 yards rushing despite sitting out the season finale because the team didn’t want to risk injury. Had he played, the former Giants star had a chance to break the all-time NFL single-season rushing record.

Both runners are also dangerous when catching passes out of the backfield. Jacobs caught 36 passes for 342 yards and a touchdown. He can turn a short screen pass into a long gain at any time.
Barkley caught 33 passes for 278 yards and two scores. One of those receiving touchdowns came against the Packers in Week 1.

Both teams also have strong rushing defenses. The Eagles rank 10th after allowing 104.2 yards per game on the ground. The Packers ranked seventh with an average of 99.4 yards per game allowed.

Both teams need their running games to be the catalyst of their offense for another reason. Packers quarterback Jordan Love suffered an elbow injury a week ago against the Bears. Love left the game early as a result. While the Packers said that he could have returned if the game meant something, we aren’t sure of the extent of the injury.

Love practiced this week, but it is not clear if his ability to grip and throw a football accurately will be impacted by the elbow. For good measure, backup quarterback Malik Willis injured the thumb on his throwing hand against the Bears. If he has to play, it’s unclear if the injury will impact his ability to throw the football.

The Eagles also have quarterback issues. Jalen Hurts left the Eagles game against Washington on December 22nd with a concussion. He missed the last two contests after that. While Hurts returned to practice this week, we don’t know if the nearly three-week layoff will impact his game on Sunday. Hurts could be rusty and his timing with his receivers could be off.

Hurts’ ability to run with the football is another big weapon for the Eagles quarterback. He finished second on the team with 630 yards rushing and he added 14 touchdowns on the ground.

On third or fourth and short, the Eagles have made the “tush push” famous with Hurts running right up the middle of the offensive line. But will he be more reluctant to run the football coming off a concussion than he normally is?

Falling behind means both teams have to throw the ball more often and run the ball less. That’s not the way they like to operate. If the Packers can jump off to an early lead, they can silence the vocal Philadelphia crowd and force the Eagles to rely on Hurts’ arm rather than Barkley’s legs to move the football.
Of course, the question is whether the Packers should start with the football if they win the toss or if they should defer and take the ball to start the second half? Head coach Matt LaFleur has usually opted to take the ball first. Would it be better to continue that practice, or should he let his defense try to stop the Eagles first to set the offense up for good field position?

Scoring first and getting off to a fast start will be critical for both teams on Sunday. The team that does so will have a better chance to win the game and advance to the divisional round of the playoffs.

I think both teams have good reasons to be a little conservative at the start of the game. Hurts hasn't practiced or played because he's been in concussion protocol, and their meat and potatoes is on the ground with Barkley and Hurts (who might not run very much against us).

Meanwhile, Green Bay has had a couple of slow starts this year that have put them in the hole and they couldn't get out. They absolutely can't go out there and have a turnover early in the game, and their meat and potatoes is also on the ground with Jacobs & Co. We haven't thrown over 30 passes since the bye week, and Love has only thrown 1 interception since then. Coincidence? More likely, a conscious decision and focus on requiring less from Love. It has worked. He has played better and the team has done better.

Here's my prediction. The first time the Packers have the ball, they need to call Jacobs number and try to run over people. It's what we've done all year, it's what got us into the playoffs, and we're going to have to do it Sunday if we're going to advance. Expecting/hoping that Love is going to air it out 40 times for 370 yards and 3TDs isn't really going to happen.

XXXXXXXXXXXXX

Factoid Nugget: The Packers are 2-4 in games where they throw 30 or more passes.

Sorry Leather... what ever happened to setting up the run with the pass? You would think and I believe the Eagles will stack the line and stuff the run early and pressure and harass Love into trying to do to much and turn the ball over. If i were the Packers I would try and keep the Eagles off balance with short quick throws and screens then set up Jacobs for some chunk runs... Yes... and Love is going to have to play the smartest game of his life? He played great in there first game... And speaking of that first game AJ Brown completely toasted Alexander several times
so maybe the Packers will have a little advantage there this time ....

1) RUN THE BALL!!! And not on the jet sweep.
2) Go to Kraft and Musgrave often. I want to see the double screen fake then hit Musgrave up the seam. Still the best play I’ve seen all year. Bring it back.
3) Never rush 3. In any situation…ever.
4) Plus one in the TO ratio.
That should do it.

Musgrave has never caught a single pass up the seam in the NFL. I don't understand the fascination with that concept.

My mistake saying it was my favorite “all year”. Rams game in 2023. Beautifully executed double screen fake and hit Musgrave up the seam for his first td.

Because he’s tall, has a big catch radius and fast for a TE. Keep in mind, he hasn’t played much ball yet in the NFL. This would be a good time to surprise the Eagles with some routes they haven’t scouted on him.

The seam is potentially useful if Musgrave runs it for how it may change the safety focus. Given we don’t have Watson, it could be used to increase the chance that Reed or Melton can get free deeper. We could also possibly use Heath to do that out of different formations.

It would be helpful if the defense got off to a fast start in the down sequences by limiting the gains on first down as much as possible. Once the Eagles get in position to execute their "formula" at third-and-short, they'll have two cracks to get the first down; the tush push has been very difficult to stop, and since this is the playoffs, they won't hesitate to use it with Hurts. Now he may be a little hesitant to take off in the open field with the concussion, so the Packers defense will have to get a feel so they can choose what level of containment to play.

It's too bad we don't have Watson in dual aspects: we lose our home run threat, and the Eagles' defense can creep a little closer to the line of scrimmage not having to worry as much about a speedy receiver getting behind them. So we probably going to need a heavy dose of "next man up" to pick up the slack.

no Watson today is a killer.

don't understand why we don't have a tush push play having Kraft run it. did you see in the texas-ohio st game where they lined up for a te tush push but the center snapped it between the te's legs to the QB who ran for a first down off the right edge? pretty cool

No drops and no fumbles on the early drives - that kills both the drives and the whole team spirit.

Not to belittle the Coaches role, cuz they are very important, but to me it’s more about the players executing what the coaches call. Actually, it will take everyone to play their best to beat a very good Eagles team, which includes good coaching and players executing at a high level. That said, Mlf please do a good job at time mgmt!

he won't. the Texans coach yesterday made a great move in that department yesterday. he was ready to throw the challenge flag near the end of the game. he stood next to the ref and let 30 seconds run off the clock and threw the flag with one second left, killing all hope for the chargers. smart

If I'm MLF and win the toss I defer and try and set the tone with my defense. Stop Barkley and pressure Hurts early. Like in Brazil, pressure up the middle caused him to heave one up down the middle the X picked off. I'm also looking for my DBs to pressure and grab as much as possible. Be physical on their receivers. Coop will be a difference maker stopping Barkley with his speed and anticipation filling gaps. GPG!!!

I'll take anything that doesn't result in the post game, HC/DC compound stupidity of "That's on me" and "It will never happen again."

How many times have we heard this? I don't know any team that wouldn't want a fast start. What, they should come out flat?

Given the choice...DON'T TAKE THE DAMN BALL FIRST!

See what they can do on the ground first, if it's working, don't go away from it. And work both TE's into the game. LaFleur talked like he had a dilemma with Musgrave coming back, like it was too much talent to handle. Then get 'em both out there and make sure "Jump ball" Jordan hits them when they're open.

Other than that, best of luck.

what's with the sudden fixation on taking the opening kick or deferring, as if it the magical key to winning or losing? now all coaches are talking about winning "the middle eight". I'm pretty sure there have been opening kickoffs for a hundred years and "winning" the toss was never a big deal.

Time for Love to step up as the veteran he now is. IMO, he’s regressed slightly so far this season, time to change that. I know he’s not Lamar Jackson, but he’s a good athlete, use your legs once in a while. GPG!

Run the ball. Script early high completion passes and get Love and the catchers in rhythm. Have Kraft as a focus and run a lot of slants. Use the fact that they play a D that tried to keep everything in front of it. Stress their run D: don’t worry about initial success too much, keep at it. Then exploit the space in between the front and the DBs. If we can do that then we can see if you can run a guy behind them occasionally, rather than as a main premise of the O.

Love has long, skinny legs-Hurts, Jayden Reed, even Rodgers, are lower to the ground, like soccer players.
Hurts has powerful legs, Rodgers built up his legs too. I think Love needs to work on his leg strength/musculature and footwork. When he runs, I hold my breath--

Can the Packers win? Yes, on any given Sunday, as they say. Will they win? No, and no knowledgeable fan truly expects them to. That said, this has been another successful season for the publicly owned team. The Packers were entertaining, if frustrating at times, and they made the playoffs. With the enduring dominance of the Lions, the ascendance of the Vikings, and the potential for Chicago to elevate its play (with a competent coaching staff) to playoff level, the Packers will struggle for relevance in the foreseeable future. So enjoy the ride as long as it lasts, celebrate the wins, move on from the losses, and be grateful for a thriving NFL team that is the cornerstone of the Green Bay community. Here’s to 2025!

Yes, you’re correct, nothing last forever…..so enjoy the ride wherever it might lead. Too many get caught up with the future they don’t enjoy the present! Sure if we lose I’ll be disappointed, but I will still enjoy the ride with many friends. One of the great things about sports is it brings friends and family together.

I think with the Packers mgmt and a very solid QB in Jordan Love this franchise will stay viable for reaching the playoffs for years to come. Another thing to keep in mind, the Lions will start losing stud players due to salary cap like any team and they haven’t shown that they can manage the franchise for long term success.

that was the old Lions management, this new crew knows how to build a team and keep it together...but they will be losing some very good coaching...there are rumors that Johnson may stay put though...it will take a great offer to get him to leave...hope he dont go to Chicago..

Nearly as important, Detroit may lose both of its coordinators. The latest rumor is that Chicago's head coaching search continues with Norte Dame's head coach, continuing the clown college.

My concern with the Packers is that I don't believe MLF will get them to the next level. I hope he proves me wrong.
