Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Love Parsons

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

It's July 1st in the year 2026 and the good news is we've gotten through another week with no bad off-field news for the Packers. Quietly boring is a very good thing this time of year and we want that to continue for the rest of the month, leading up to the first day of training camp on July 29th.

However, Micah Parsons continues to be seen, well, enjoying life. In early June, he participated in the Packers Charity Softball Game, although he mostly just acted as coach and gave some ridiculous tongue-in-cheek motivational speeches to his teammates. "How will we be remembered" was one that had Parson's struggling to keep a straight face. He didn't do any running and the most physical thing he did was throw a baseball around warming up his teammates. Yesterday, he popped up back in Dallas to watch the World Cup contest between Norway and the Ivory Coast. No word on whether he was seen doing the "Norway row" or dancing wildly when Ivory Coast scored their only goal, but he did appear up on the big screen at the Stadium. And what a sight that was. At 250 lbs in his Adidas shirt, he looked like he was wearing shoulder pads. His arms and shoulders looked massive and one can only imagine this is a huge (pun intended) reason why he can power through offensive lineman much bigger and heavier than himself. But I digress...

Micah has been seen doing other non-football activities that does require more than sitting in a dugout or a comfy padded chair in AT&T Stadium. It seems he participated in an NFL players pickleball tournament last weekend. I don't know how much you know about pickleball, but it does require a lot of side-to-side movement, twisting and, (gulp!) bending of the knees. Sure, Micah is surely doing  much more difficult things in his recovery exercises, but those are in a stable and controlled environment. You can't always control what you are called upon to do when you're playing an actual game, even one as seemingly non-threatening as pickleball. As an uber- competitor, Micah was unlikely to half-ass it and sure enough, he and his partner Jordan Love were the winners of the tournament. I may be making too much of this, but I am kind of surprised that the ultra-conservative Packers allowed their marquee player recovering from an ACL injury to participate. Could that mean that things are going quite swimmingly in his recovery or just that the Packers are loosening the reins on their players? Or just that I am generating too many polluted thoughts during this dead period?

Anyway, I think an important thing is happening during this offseason and that is an apparent strong bond forming between Parsons and Jordan Love. WIth Parsons coming to the Packers just before the start of the season, they never really had an opportunity to really connect away from football. Parsons is not shy about voicing his football opinions. His willingness to be a vocal leader as well as a "by example" leader on the field will only help Jordan Love. Love is always cool, calm and collected, which is a very good thing, but sometimes a quarterback needs to let his teammates know when he's not happy with what they are doing. I'm not talking Aaron Rodgers death stares here, but Love following Parsons' example could benefit the offense during periods when it seems they have their heads up their asses. Jordan Love will be just fine and doesn't NEED to do this, but he could turn out to be even greater if he learns a few things from Parsons.

Go Pack Go!

I agree on Pickle Ball for Parson's. I have played it and am surprised he was playing it. There are a lot of sudden and unexpected moves that you make when playing. Glad he was not hurt and surprised the pack let him too.

Hello AL, thanks for finally getting some encouraging news on Parsons. We are all keeping our fingers crossed that he comes back 100% and sooner than what has been reported. Having Parsons potentially missing 10 games to start the 2026 season is a real blow to GB having a successful reason. Because of the lack of real NFL production behind him, I am hoping GB signs Clowney to steer us through the first half of the season.

I read this on Athlon today, it really puts a spotlight on why we need immediate help at Edge.
" The Green Bay Packers could be forced to navigate a healthy chunk of the 2026 NFL season without All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons. Parsons missed each of Green Bay's final four games of the 2025 campaign, including its Wild Card loss to the Chicago Bears, and will enter the new year on the team's PUP list.

His absence proved a significant loss for the Packers' defense, which allowed 400 yards in three of its final four games without Parsons, recording just two sacks during that stretch. The front office addressed the void its defense will face without the four-time All-Pro, by signing Javon Hargraves and drafting Dani Dennis Sutton."

While I acknowledge Wyatt was also gone several games before Parsons got hurt, we have already seen a preview of what to expect from the players behind Parsons. They have accomplished very little to nothing as a group. Granted, Gary was on the team but seemed to take an extended vacation from pass rushing the 2nd half of the season. We are placing the weight of the world on these young guys and while I want them to gain valuable experience, I don't want it to be at the expense of losing a bunch of games and tanking the season because of no pass rush.

The options are drying up, but a very reasonable one is still available in Clowney. Why do you suppose we haven't even tried to fill this gap?

Your question got me thinking and researching. What I found out is Clowney is a vested veteran. That means if the Packers sign Clowney during training camp and I believe before training camp and he is on the roster on week one he is guaranteed his full salary for the year. That means the Packers could not recoop any of his salary if they decide to cut him after Parsons returns.

That is important because the Packers have young guys they want to play and when Parsons returns and Clowney still on the team because he is still getting paid means less playing time for the young guys or you are paying Clowney to sit and take up a roster spot.

They might be waiting for the season to begin to sign him.

Sure, he's a vested vet but, like Isaiah Simmons last year, if he's not moving the needle or he's getting outplayed they can cut him when they finalize rosters and not be on the hook for the cash value of his contract.

I think the answer is more straightforward than that: they want to see their young guys in pads before they commit cap to someone like Clowney. It may be they need a backup LT more. They've got a couple extensions to work out yet and probably are watching every dollar.

I'm on the "add a vet" bandwagon, and there are a couple out there to be had. I think Clowney is the most accomplished.

It's also still possible that we lose both #8 and Marshawn Lloyd, in which case Gutey would want anything spent at EDGE back. Same goes for TE, O line, and CB. If all these seem fine then a bridge EDGE player could be the next highest priority.

I get the GB wants to see what they have in the young guys. But the less playing time for them doesn't hold water. The fact is Clowney got his 8.5 sacks last year, coincidently the same amount of sacks LVN has in 3 years, playing less than 40% of the snaps in Dallas. So that means the young guys are still going to get a ton of snaps to see what they can do.

With Jordan & Epenesa already signed, Bosa probably retired, the actual decent Edge market is drying up fast. $5 million is a small price to pay for giving us a legitimate chance to have a pass rush and win games while Parsons is out.

We were without Wyatt. We were without Cox. We were without LVN. We never really saw Oliver. DDS had not been drafted. Sorrell was a rookie.

In between them we were playing Brooks and Wooden as starters and they were both impotent as rushers and road kill against the run. Outside that a lot of Enagbare, who was never much of a threat and Gary, who just wasn’t getting it done.

One hopes Hargraves, McClellan and a true Anchor might help deter the run and mess up the pocket as well. Enagbare and Gary are gone, as is Wooden and possibly Brooks may follow. A lot of dead wood has been felled already to open space for new shoots.

So we haven’t really seen what the current group can do because we haven’t really seen most of it and certainly not better. Outside of LVN, it seems more suited to a 4:3 OLB role to the extent that we play base too. At some point you have to look to getting something from youth not papering over cracks in the NFL. There’s a good chance that we are at that point.

There’s best chance of sack production improvement comes from the players we weren’t seeing for the most part later last season. These are the ones you would replace with Clowney. That’s a this year sticking plaster at best. It could be one that inhibits internal healing, both this year and after.

I have little doubt the Packer Admin were cringing at the announcement Parsons was playing pickle ball. But I also believe Parsons is the personality type that does what he chooses.
And… I hope Parsons energy/inspiration rubs off on more than Love.
He, Kraft, and Jacobs too, play with fire—reckless abandon. More of that please.
Go Packers!!!

I agree, the Packers probably would rather he didn't, but that might be true of any of their big-money players participating in other sporting endeavors out of season. At six full months out from his surgery, though, it could be that a non-contact sport like pickleball--especially doubles--might be a good fit for him in his recovery. I'm guessing he played with a brace (and will probably play football with a brace the rest of his career).

I am glad that there is little news about the Packers during the dead zone except for Kraft having a disagreement about his garbage being picked up.

The thing about Love is he is authentic. I think whenever he does vocalize his displeasure, his teammates will listen. Like Starr, he will pick his spots.

All I can say about Parsons playing pickleball is that I hope he knows what he is doing. Starrbrite makes a valid point above, which is that it may have been entirely his own decision. At any rate, I've abandoned the notion that the Packers are cautious about injuries. In the past few years, we've seen several players come back from injuries only to be immediately re-injured again, and this isn't just hindsight, they did appear to be pushing their luck when they put those players back on the field.

The part about Love's leadership is interesting. My wife has said that Love does not have that spark that inspires his teammates to rally around him. She doesn't follow the Packers to anywhere near the level than I do, and I don't really believe her, but sometimes I wonder if there is some truth to what she says. Maybe Love needs to grow in that area. I don't really know. Even if that is the case, I don't think it's a major issue and is maybe just something that needs a little more refinement. I thought Love's performance in the clutch was better last season, but I can't say the same about the team as a whole.

Like I said, he's always cool, calm and collected, which can give the impression of passiveness to the casual observer like your wife. Like you, I don't think it's a major issue either, but there's always room for growth and improvement in all areas, right?

Some leaders are vocal, but often the best say little, but when they do it gets listened to. Is that Love? I have no way of knowing and nor do any of us outside of Lambeau.

One of my frustrations this summer is that we haven’t seen Colin Oliver this summer. I’ve been wanting to see him next to Parsons. Why? Oliver tested at 240, Parsons at 246. Parsons has said he bulked up to 260 and got as low as 240 trying to find his best weight, which he believes is his best weight and, unusually, what he’s now listed as (which normally never changes).

We have all tended to see Oliver as a small fry version of Micah, but there’s not a vast amount of difference if Oliver has been active in the weight room. Oliver is 6’2 and Parsons 6’3 (a little over an inch if you use the Centimeters: 188 to 191). However, the gap is not that large in terms of frame that Oliver couldn’t add similar functional mass.

For context, Cox and Mosby weighed 250 at testing, Sorrell and DDS both 256. It’s worth noting that all 3 non-Parsons 250 pounders have held up well in the run game to date. Hence my curiosity about seeing them standing together in summer gear.

Of course, it would be even better to see Oliver practicing consistently, but at least the visual comparative might give us a better perspective of what Oliver can be. Oliver actually tested as more explosive and has a faster 10 yards. A fractional trade off there for bulk would not necessarily be a bad exchange. It seems to me the defining question (after getting on the field) is whether he can replicate that at around 250 having added some bulk and power.

It’s summer, it’s hot, but there are still some football things to muse on, though like Al, I see the best thing at this time of year as being an absence of new off field drama.

Oliver is intriguing for sure. He is a real wild card. Unfortunately he is getting into Marshawn Lloyd territory with these injuries. Do you know if Jonathan Gannon has any history of using speed rusher types? Possibly it's not an issue if Oliver has bulked up, but I still wonder. I know there was some talk from the coaching staff about him playing LB when he was drafted. I tend to be skeptical about these "tweener" types, as I don't recall the Packers ever having one who really found a role on the team.

Interesting that you ask that. Yes he has. Haason Reddick was coincidentally 240 pounds when drafted and had a career high 16 sacks under Gannon in 2022 in exactly that type of role.

It's true that GB wanted some tweeners, and never had success with it. We have several now, and some different coaching staff. JG certainly has a variety of tools to use, if he can apply them intelligently he might get the best out of everyone, and that could result in hurries, pressures and sacks. Any way that our defense can be disruptive is good!

LOL, thanks for the trip down memory lane with the Aaron Rodgers "death stares". I kind of miss those....

What I would really like to see Jordan Love do is fill the chemistry void with Doubs now that he is gone. To me, the perfect candidate is Golden. He should feel much more comfortable with the offense in his second year, and with his hands and ability to make extra yards on his own, this could be a special connection for years to come.

In terms of connection, all 3 of our top WRs have similar speed. Hopefully that translates to JL10 hitting them in stride as they run as fast as they can, that'd be very difficult for anyone to cover. One of the things that made Gronk so special is he seemed to have ESP about when his QB needed help, he was able to find an open spot, and TB12 made more than a few plays like that. If #85 and JL10 develop that type of connection, that would be HUGE. Ditto for RB as check downs, which we haven't seen JL10 utilize much.

I like Parsons. He speaks his mind. Like last year when the defense faded in the second half of games and at the end if the year became of poor conditioning. He forces players to give their best.

Parsons is not Love, Kraft nor Cooper and is being opaque about his healing progress while Kraft is transparent. The problem began long ago with poor drafting and lack of talent on the D-Line. Neither LVN nor Gary have come anywhere close to their Draft status and Wyatt is out for lengthy periods. Parsons was a desperate grab by Gutekunst. All of this was predictable.

As someone who has had ACL surgery twice, Micah playing pickle ball is OUTSTANDING news. The fact that he feels confident enough to do that is awesome. If you haven't been through that, regaining the confidence to move at speed - especially laterally - is far and away the most difficult part of the rehab. It was 9 months before I could do that after my first ACL surgery - and the only reason it happened that quickly was because I was playing with the dog and forgot to be terrified of lateral movement. Physically, I was fine. I had long since been released from the PT program since I had far exceeded their goals for me on every single metric. But mentally, I completely shut down any time I went to move laterally with any speed. Seeing him already at that place mentally is the best possible news, in my experience.
