Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Feeling a Draft

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

NFL Draft in Green Bay - How great is this? And yet, soooooooo many people with concern about Green Bay having the "infrastructure" to host the NFL Draft (is "infrastructure" the new "leverage"?) I've been to Green Bay eight times now. The last time was the Packers' playoff win over the Seahawks in 2020. At that time, with the addition of the Kohler Lodge, Titletown buildout and newfound relative ease of finding a hotel room, it was pretty clear this was a very different Green Bay than the one I'd seen on other trips. The Packers and the town of Green Bay have been building toward becoming even more of a prime location for football fans than it's always been. Green Bay and the surrounding towns will be able to handle the NFL Draft weekend just fine. All you worrywarts can move on to something else.

Truer Words - were never spoken - from Aaron Jones: "If you think we're in a rebuild then you got the wrong team, wrong place... We know what people are saying, but everybody has an opinion and most of them stink."

OTA Notable Notes:

Jayden Reed gets the first snaps at slot receiver with the 1's and the first punt return rep.

Luke Musgrave gets first snaps at TE with the 1's

Lukas Van Ness starts out with the 2's at edge rusher.

LaFleur Unleashed - In a change from previous years, instead of having scripted play installations, LaFleur is calling plays on the fly in the 11-on-11 drills. It's a test to see "how they think on their feet," LaFleur said.  I know what LaFleur said, but all I hear is, "I can do what I want now."

Keisean is a Bad Man - Keisean Nixon being so good has spooked the other 31 teams into wanting to eliminate kickoffs completely! This fair catch rule is just the first step.

Three wishes - If a genie granted me three Packers wishes for this season, the first one would be for the Packers' defense to show up in game 1. Over the last three seasons, they've given up an average of 31.67 points in the first game. The second one would be for Love to Watson to remind us of Favre to Sharpe - a true game-changing duo. The third would be to sweep the Division games.

Dontayvion Wicks - Interesting comments from Jason Vrable support my hope that the Packers found themselves a fifth-round gem. The physical traits are all there, that's for sure...

“He’s so intelligent on his visit, the way he was writing on the board and articulating his plays,” Vrable said this week. “I think that’s what you get from those visits more than a Zoom call. You can really feel the character and passion of the person, and his love of the game. He knew his system inside and out and could communicate, and you can feel that connection, just like a I did with Rome (Doubs) and Christian (Watson) and Samori (Toure). I think he did a tremendous job on his visit, he was himself, and he carries himself in a very professional demeanor. I think he’s a true pro right away. I haven’t had to talk to him about how to study or go about it because he just had that mentality about him.”

Working on Love - Just going to leave this right here...

I'm anxious to see what Wicks and DuBose bring to the offense. I hope they get reps with Love, soon and often. Learn that playbook, fellas! GO PACK, GO!!!

The Packers currently have 4 WRs who run under 4.4 e.g Watson , Melton, Cotton, and most recently Reed. Then they have 2 who run in the 4.4's Doubs and Toure. This would be the fastest group of WR's in the league. The other two receivers in the mix are Dubose 4.57 and Wicks the slowest at 4.62 who also has a history of drops in college. I don't understand why many seem to discount the numbers. Generally, football has evolved over the years into a game where blazing speed and size dominates. Granted, there are rare exceptions. Davante Adams was an extremely rare exception. Those are the facts. Opinions vary but numbers don't lie. All things being equal keep the speed guys.

Thats not entirely true. Some of the best receivers in recent years have been on the slower side. Adams, Cooper Kupp, Michael Thomas, Mike Evans, Deandre Hopkins, Keenan Allen, Tee Higgins, Doug Baldwin, JuJu Smith-Schuster (has fallen off in recent years but exploded early in his career), etc. Not one of them ran sub-4.5 40 yd dash times. With the exception of Baldwin, they all have good size, but none have elite speed.

Long speed isn’t everything. Wicks, for example, has elite burst. He excelled at getting behind coverage at the line. He’s not going to win a level foot race with most corners, but neither will Adams. What he does do is separate consistently through burst and, surprisingly for a long strider, a very sudden cut.

What matters in football is not whether you can run faster than everyone, but whether you can get open consistently, make the catch and then add some yards. Wicks can do 2 of those very well. The catching is going to be the thing he has to show he can do consistently. I am not convinced he can, I didn’t like the pick, but if (a big one in his case) he does catch consistently I believe he has more than enough talent to be a good X. Melton too has to show he can catch.

Of course, if another receiver of similar size has that ability to get separation and speed on top of that, then if all other things are equal, he will likely out play Wicks. And that’s the point. It doesn’t matter how a guy gets it done, as long as he does. That won’t be seen until the pass come on and contact starts. But it’s why good athletes often don’t make good players in real games.

For what it’s worth, my tip for the biggest impact at WR outside of Watson and Doubs this year remains Toure. Not because of his long speed, but his combination of incredible short area agility and resulting catch radius for an 6’3 guy and good hands, helped by the 8 pounds of muscle he added this off season.

Love this, Al. All of it.

I’m not surprised by Reed getting #1 slot & PR. He’s that dynamic.

Wicks? The Packers stole him.

I believe they both win starter positions. Doubs (who led the Packers with 9 drops last season) will be battling hard to keep his #2WR status with Dontayvion Wicks around.

…. and I don’t mean in the drops department! Lol. I chalk all of that up to HC & new system changes in a Virginia program that took a bad turn.

Wicks’ 2021 was stellar, going off for 57 rec, 1201 yds. 21.1 ypc, 9 TD, QB Rating when targeted 128.5.

Everything I’ve seen of Wicks takes me straight back to Davante Adams in his Year 2-3. Wicks has that kind of footwork & ability to gain separation like a boss. Wicks & Adams' footwork at the LOS are eerily similar. He looks super reliable. Super tough too.

Aaron Jones' "Truer Words?" YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!

The video? Packers win 60-0.

I LOVE the Reed pick, especially sandwiched between two of the more dynamic TE's in an excellent TE draft class and after Van Ness. Personally I loved the Packers first 4 selections AND both trade downs which got them Wicks and Brooks.

I think Reed along with the TEs is going to go hand in hand with the Packers previous picks (Watson, Doubs, Toure) and together it will be a hell of a GROUP. There WILL be bumps along the way followed by moments of thinking/hoping this group just may grace the cover of a SI Cover, just like Rodgers, Driver, Jennings, Jones, Cobb, and Finley did back in 2011.

I KNOW I'm a bit ahead of myself. But being the self-proclaimed #1 Homer on this site, I get to do that! ; )

Hahaha! You do, Nick!

I’m right with you too! Those first 4 picks were stellar, in my eyes. Pre-Combine, I think all of Van Ness, Musgrave & Kraft were ranked between 18-25 by Athlon’s. Kraft was #18… Musgrave was #23.

Both those making a Reed sandwich? Reed was my top choice for the Packers at WR.

Opposing defenses won’t know what hit ‘em. I have no fear in stating that this early in the process either.

Kraft & Musgrave are nearly identical in terms of speed (4.62/4.61 respectively) but their games are so different, and are perfect complements to each other.

My mind’s eye envisioning Reed & Watson with both? Wow.

Keep on keepin’ on, Nick!

"Kraft & Musgrave are nearly identical in terms of speed (4.62/4.61 respectively) but their games are so different, and are perfect complements to each other."

Their official combine measurements for speed have Kraft at 1.6/10, 2.71/20, and 4.69/40. Whereas Musgrave is 1.54/10, 2.62/20, 4.61/40. Kraft though seems like more of a power player in the Gronk mold whereas Musgrave, at least now, is more in the Kelce (albeit slightly taller) mold as a big receiver who blocks a bit. Combined they could give teams fits for years to come if they progress in the NFL.

Surprisingly Kraft had a 4.29 shuttle vs Musgrave's 4.41. I would have expected Musgrave with his competitive skiing background to do a bit better in the agility drills. Granted it could be that was still recovering from his knee injury. Apparently Musgrave was only cleared to start running like 2 weeks before the Senior Bowl. I know from personal knee surgery experience this year that even after going through 2 months of PT it has taken a few extra months for my knee to feel to the point of being able to try to make sharp cuts again.

Keeping in mind that this is all conjecture based on college play, I tend to favor Kraft because he seems to have a reputation for being much more of a bulldog. I certainly want this team to take on a tougher edge and a more in-your-face kind of attitude on the field.

If we're going to compare either of these TEs to Kelce, I'd actually pick Kraft due to his greater physicality. Kelce made his reputation at Cinci as a blocker first, then bloomed later as a pass catcher. We just don't give him credit for his blocking because he runs a lot of routes. He's uber competitive...so much of it is what's between these guys' ears.

https://nflcombineresults.com/playerpage.php?i=31120
https://nflcombineresults.com/playerpage.php?i=10397

I've seen some comparisons for Musgrave to Mike Gesicki, who really wasn't a blocker coming out (and still isn't much of one), but if Musgrave ends up a TE of that quality--without the head-case issues--that's a win. The issue with Musgrave has been pointed out regularly: he just hasn't played as much as some of these other guys.

I wouldn't be surprised if during the 2024 off-season the Packers want Musgrave to put on more leg muscle. Seeing pictures of him he looks a little thin in the legs. Also look at pictures of Kraft and Musgrave together and you would think Kraft has 10lbs on Musgrave when it is like 2lbs.

They aren’t the same player despite their size/speed similarities. I don’t see them ever becoming clones. I think there was a reason we doubled up on them and it wasn’t to have one verses the other but to open a wider range of offensive options.

Right now, until I see otherwise, I see Musgrave as a lot more physically gifted Lazard. However, it will be interesting to see how DuBose slots in when he’s healthy. The new guy they signed, Bonds, is a very similar type, as is Heath, who got snaps yesterday I gather. They clearly have an interest in and a role in mind for that bigger type X/big slot type WR (Wicks has spent almost no time in the slot in the past, so I expect him to just focus on X at this point). It will be interesting to see how that DuBose/Heath/Bonds role and Musgrave’s dovetail.

Yeah. Musgrave is still in recovery. I do think you've got that timetable right for when he's able to work on adding leg strength/mass to build his base a bit more. Can easily see a solid 2 year plan on that.

Totally agree, and a great take, dobber. I'd just emphasize that Musgrave's no slouch in his blocking. He's not just a "get in the way" guy. He's more effective than he's given credit for. I watch a ton of the PAC12 stuff being an ASU alum.

Regardless, both of these guys have some great development trajectories playing together here in GB. Both players will get a ton of opportunities. Should be fun to see that along the way.

They both fit different roles. Look at the 49ers, who seem to be the template for the offense Lafleur/Gute have been trying to build. Everyone knows about Kittle, who serves as the "move" tight end thats heavily targeted. But Ross Dwelley also gets a ton of reps as the inline tight end and Kyle Juszczyk gets a ton of reps at h-back/fullback. Kraft fits the Dwelley role, Musgrave fits the Kittle role, and Deguara fits the Juszczyk role. I expect Kraft, Musgrave, and Deguara to all get a ton of reps in a variety of formations and looks just like the 49ers do with their guys. Dont be surprised if we see a decent amount of 1st down and short yardage plays where all 3 are on the field at the same time.

I really like the idea of your first down/short yardage grouping.
It can be argued that has been the offense's biggest weakness in the last two years.
I have to pinch myself, as I'm starting to get giddy about the offense just like I was last year at this time about last year's defense.
We know how poorly the first half of the season went.
I'm the optimist though, let's go!

Yeah, DoubleJ.

Those numbers were off top of my head... Anyhow, agree with your take on returning from injury/surgery. It almost always takes one solid year post surgery for real recovery, to the point where you're not thinking about it anymore, and you can just go.

I think it would be smart to ease up with Musgrave a bit the first half of the season. Float some reps in there he can build on. Nothing too extravagant. 2nd half of the season, Musgrave should be in a much better place.

Musgrave was injured September 10th, 2022 against Fresno St. and had surgery to repair his MCL.

Those personal tests post surgery are important. Once you get past that 1 year threshold seeing what you're able to do, how you can cut, start/stop, accelerate, etc... learn what abrupt changes in weather do to the affected area, all that stuff... go through that physically and then mentally acknowledging/understanding all of it in your mind, then testing it again, and again, and again... that's when recovery becomes way more complete.

AFTER night two, when Gute drafted Musgrave, Reed, and then Kraft, I was still a little miffed we didn't take JSN. BUT, after looking into Van Ness a bit more and then looking at these picks grouped with last years WR picks, it was the absolute best way to go.

These last 2 drafts could very well be the defining drafts for this Packers team for the next several years to come. Thing is, I think Gute got A LOT of them right. Time will tell.

Yeah, Nick. I know there were a number of people who wanted JSN or Quentin Johnston at #13. It wasn't going to address our top need position, which was EDGE, nor our top team need, which was run stop.

Look back at how poorly the Packers have been set up from a personnel standpoint to stop the run, for years. It really needed to be addressed with the best talents Gutekunst could bring in, and I was surprised he dropped that far, myself.

Lukas Van Ness cures a lot of what has ailed the Packers for years. Adding Wooden & Brooks to the mix up front defensively, WOW.

LVN being top run stop EDGE in the entire draft class does not suck.

That Reed sandwich with Kraft & Musgrave bread doesn't suck either. Quite the opposite. Should fortify our O for years.

In general, all these drafted WR have a college resume. All of them were volume receivers at some point--whether they had a down 2022 or an injury--so we know they can play ball.

Put them out there and let them compete! The depth chart will take care of itself.

Wicks was one of my pre-draft crushes! I felt like I was on an island following the draft claiming the Packers got a steal with Wicks who easily should have been a 1st, or 2nd round pick. He is that good once he overcomes some of his drops. You bring up an interesting aspect about Doubs who I am extremely high on. Doubs is going to be an awesome WR! Moving forward I forsee a lot of conversation about who should be getting most of the reps/start between Doubs & Wicks. This is going to be competitive & a lot of fun!

Further complicating everything for Wicks/Doub is with Reed at slot & the occasional rotating of Musgrave & even Tucker there are already a lot of quality players who could steal reps there.

The Packers are absolutely stacked at skilled positions like WR, TE, and RB. Sure at the moment with the rookies it is unrealized potential but there isn't even one 2023 WR & TE who I shouldn't become a quality player. Pair this talent with a strong OL, and an upcoming QB with star potential and Holy Hanna this offense will become explosive and fun to watch.

Lazard was the real slot-snap hog in 2022. Tonyan did run quite a few out of the slot, though. You're right: the Packers seem to favor the 'big-slot' type, which opens play time for guys like Musgrave or Kraft right off the bat. Wicks isn't a smurf, though, so he might compete there. I'm hoping that LaF will get a little more creative with how he runs his offense and groups his personnel, though

As I see it, the plan is to have multiple players that are genuinely good blocking WRs (be they nominally TEs or WRs) out there who are also a better offensive threat and, potentially, interchangeable as to role out of any given personnel group. Lazard was a point of predictability 90% of the time in any formation. Sometimes that allowed him to get free, but most often it and his lack of threat post catch meant coverage could focus elsewhere. This group seems designed to counter that reality.

As far as I can tell, yesterday they had a 4 WR look out there a reasonable amount. X: Watson, Y Doubs, Z/motion Toure, Slot Reed. I think Deguara was the TE in that look, at least to start.

It’s frustrating, but I see and watched/heard a lot of soft basic “impressions” and precious little detail about this type of thing. It’s OTAs in May, pundits. What matters most is who is out there, with whom and precious little else mess much at all. Let’s get some detail in this year when personnel usage and formations.

We aren’t going to see route complexity, sacks in shorts mean little and an uncontested WR should catch a ball if it’s halfway accurate. Give us some details not generalized opinions or answers to asinine questions that could have been asked and have been all off season.

Seems like off season form from writers and talkers across all sources to me. Opinion can be interesting but some hard information is actually more so and puts them in context ehike allowing us to form them too.

I could see some really fun 2 TE formations out of the Packers this year. Out wide line up Watson and Doubs, Reed in the slot next to Doubs, Musgrave in the slot next to Watson, and Kraft inline. That gives you 4 receivers that are 6'2+ with 3 of them 6'5+. Not to mention you have a crazy amount of speed on the field which will make DC afraid of what you want to do. Sure teams will know it is a pass but how do you cover that much size AND speed. Alternatively you could motion Reed into the backfield for a possible handoff or replace Reed with Jones.

I could see another setup with Watson and Doubs out wide and Kraft and Musgrave inline on opposite sides with Jones or Dillion in the backfield. Have a passing play where your WRs run posts at different depths and your TEs run corners. Hopefully LaFluer is able to come up with some creative ways to use these guys together.

Any scheme grouping that doesn't include Aaron Jones is not the Packers best.

AJ is the most versatile and proven talent on the team, he needs to be used in 99% of the personnel packages.

I love the thought of all these young talented players terrorizing opponents, but in reality AJ is uber-explosive and needs his snaps.

What no one has mentioned so far, (at least above) except for the jet sweep, is how all these formations can be used to run AJ and AJD up the gut and other running plays. That's not to mention a young QB that can keep Ds worried about his feet too.

I can't believe how this season and draft is shaping up to help the line become dominant.

I don't think this bevy of top talents (as I see them to be, the entire group of Watson, Doubs, Toure, Melton, Reed, Wicks, DuBose) fighting for reps & opportunities as "complicating" anything, Knock, other than opposing DC's underwear laundering...

Seems it would be best for LaFleur to lay down the law that he's looking more for team contributions rather than individual achievement as a focus, and for every player to be ready to contribute at any time, because the whole playbook not only expanded, but is -entirely - OPEN FOR BUSINESS.

That's a lot of different touches, by a lot of other talented players to spread big plays around to in 2023. Keep opponents guessing continuously throughout the 2023 schedule and beyond. WRs, TEs, RBs... that's probably about 14 different players off the top of my head, and each capable of a big play, an explosive play, a chain moving play, or simply a positive play made to get us closer to our goals..

Team goals. Team achievements. One week at a time.

There is ONE MVP TROPHY that everybody can win together in 2023, and it's called THE LOMBARDI TROPHY.

The Draft... I mentioned it yesterday...As much as I voice (or post) my displeasures about Mark Murphy, this was a HELL of way to put a stamp on his tenure as the Packers President. Listening to part of the Wilde & Tausch show yesterday with Rob Demovsky, it was obvious both Wilde and Demovsky were both concerned about the "Infrastructure" in Green Bay. Wilde used an example of Coffee as in how in the hell some of these media SNOBS would get their Starbucks? FU** your Starbucks you media snobs! This IS the MECCA of the NFL!

MLF unleashed... Hey, as long as LaFleur is running the offense, the ENTIRE offense we thought he'd run when he was hired, I don't give a damn about scripted plays. Making these KIDS think on their feet is a good thing. I for one am excited about this offense and what it will look like this season, or better yet, by the end of the season.

Van Ness... If Gary isn't ready something tells me Van Ness will be out there with the starters week one.

3 Wishes... Yup, the Defense would be right up there and so would Andres Carlson NAILING all his FG and extra point attempts week one. Just like Mason Crosby did in a 2007 week one 16-13 win over the Eagles with the game winner in the last 2 seconds.

One other sneaky one on D is Jonathan Ford, who didn't see a single snap in 2022. The only place to go is up for the enormous NT (6-5 338) who came in very, very raw in his technique.

The fact that Gutekunst didn't take a single NT with 13 picks tells me the Packers are happy with Ford's development thus far.

Exactly.

It's good to remember Devonte Wyatt was definitely an ascending talent when he was drafted R1 by the Packers. His top enticements as an R1 DL were his exceptional quickness, feet, his speed and his lateral movement abilities that were off the charts.

I couldn't agree more, TK.

Wyatt at 6-3 304 had a 4.77 40 (98%), a 1.66 10 yd (92%), a 111 broad (83%) and a 7.45 3-cone (77%). His tackling in the 78% range, his pass rush & run defense both 89%.

In 2021 he started 12 games for a Georgia defense that rotated players heavily, with 34 tackles leading their interior DL, 22 QB pressures, 4 sacks, 17 hurries, 5 QB hits, 2 PD.

Wyatt is a dominant interior defender who never takes a play off, and is a very strong tackler... he finishes plays. High instincts for the game too.

Wyatt's overall grade at PFF 2021 was 90.3 with the majority of his work at the B Gap. Phenomenal numbers.

Now we get to see him with a full year of development. Can't wait.

Nice to have it. Hope they make the best of the off-season developing all 90 + PS.

My wishes: 100% effort from every player, every play. In game adjustments being part of the skill set of our coaches, including talent evaluation that puts the best man on the job. Superb play calling.

If the talent is utilized properly, I don't see individual players being the limiting factor. The yutes can become a core for a decade or more.

Ive never doubted Murphy's business acumen. Just wish he was less involved in the football side of things. Just like Lafleur had Rodgers stepping on his toes, Gute has had Murphy stepping on his toes too. Hopefully thats in the past now and Lafleur/Gute can be left alone to do their jobs.

I Love the draft in GB.
I’m sure it will just about encroach on
Everything, everywhere, everyone.
Everyone has a RV now,
just give them a place to park it!

I say a skunk smells it own odor first.
We are in a Rebuild.

Reed and first snaps.
It’s where they finish that counts.

MLF- Seat is Hot.

KOs- No on side Kicks Late?
Can’t agree with that.

3 wishes- Try rubbing a Lamp first.
Ok -I’ll write mine in a bottle and throw it
In the-ocean.

I have more hope for Wicks than Reed.
Just play the guy that can move the sticks.

Love - You play like you practice.
Except when you're a MVP?

Interesting informations, Al.

NFL Draft in Green Bay - I have no doubts that NFL would decline 2025 Draft to be in Green Bay if they did not gave them data that Green Bay can be host for that 3 days. So, I'm not worry about that.

Truer Words - There is a lot to like about Aaron Jones, especially about his attitude...

OTA Notable Notes - Everything expected from your short report...

LaFleur Unleashed - now we will see is MLF is true offensive genius. My objections on him was his lack of balls, but I admit that he eas in very unpleasent situatio.

Keisean is a Bad Man - I understand why he is complaining, but lets be honest here. NFL is doing for a long time now to reduce injuries on kick off and punt returns. How this will show in that department we would have to wait and see. Personally I do not like that change.

Three wishes - nice choices Al. But I would say that yI would like to see Packers ability to put 35 or more points in the first 4 to 5 games on their score. Just to start offense on high level and to be 6-0 in division, what is not an easy task. And to be in play off, no matter as winner of division or as wild card.

Dontayvion Wicks - it is always nice to hear how young players take seriously their chances and have love for what they do. It is kind of promise to be great.

Working on Love - interesting is how many contradictory info are coming about Jordan Love. Only to say is that I see huge potential and off season + OTAs are not measure of anything. I trully expect him to have very good team around him, and that the team will give him chance to show us how good he is.

After all, another gem article from you!

Aaron jones comes from a military family so its hardly surprising he grew to be a man of such character. I remember reading about him before he was drafted and how he had to deal with moving around a lot due to his father's nature of work. That type of situation forces a kid to grow up fast. Its one of the reasons I absolutely loved him and I was doing carthwheels when they drafted him lol.

Aaron Jones seems the kind of guy of talent plus character who we want showing our young Packers the way on and off the field.
It's wise in general to sprinkle a few vets like Jones in with a youth movement so that -- in keeping with the quote from Jones above -- it's not a rebuild but a reload.
If our vets on the Packers step up this season, beginning now, as players and persons to emulate, then we could indeed contend for the playoffs at 9-8 or better.
What's more, the team will be building toward a bright 2024 and beyond of rising to the top of the NFL.

Took my grandson on a tour of Cowboys stadium. Found out the NFL wasn't considering Dallas for SBs until they had enough hotel rooms closer to stadium, verses their past performance in last SB.
Same guide listed Green Bay as probable draft day destination because of all the infrastructure they built around Lambeau field.
I'm not getting too excited one way or the other about OTAs. I think, maybe it's hope, that Love has this competitive edge that will surprise a lot of people. He has the physical capability, now let's see his mental toughness. That won't show until TC.
I think this team may be playing with an attitude this year. Can't wait to see it.

" LaFleur Unleashed". That to me is the most interesting of many interesting questions about the 2023 Packers. What will the offense look like? If the Packers go back to LaFleur's first season as head coach and show more motion, more schemes to get WRs open, and more running the ball, I will be a very happy fan. The Packer offense has looked predictable the last 2-3 years and good defenses could stop it. A return to the "illusion of complexity" might help unlock some of the offensive potential on the roster. The bullseye is on LaFleur to prove his offense can get it done in the NFL.

Guam, I think LaFleur will be 2023’s greatest surprise.

That offense Aaron Rodgers kept running against his HC’s intentions was an abysmally tired contraption spanning close to a decade back in time.

His own QB1 subverting his wishes & direction had to have been immensely stressful. I do believe that’s what has been happening since LaFleur was hired.

Not a recipe for success when one of your main ingredients goes bad.

His removal via trade? Brilliant. The positive impact will be felt team-wide, but, maybe nowhere greater than at HC.

I have long believed QB12 was subverting not only LaFleur, but McCarthy in his later years with the Packers. I keep hearing McCarthy say "we need to run the ball more". I have almost zero proof of this (only Bahk's recent comment about running the ball more now that Rodgers was traded), but nonetheless strongly suspect it. The 2023 Packer offense will be an interesting revelation and we may finally get a better idea of how much sway Rodgers was exerting over the play calling.

I hope we get to see the "real" MLF offense in 2023 and it looks very different than what the Packers have been running with Rodgers.

This will be one of many interesting aspects!

Over the off-season, seeing this development idea happen - that will be a lot of MLF as part of the whole organization. That's really what it takes, the whole thing. Can they learn to function together? I don't much care how or who, just bring the best out of everybody. After that, lots of details fall into place.

At the same time, MLF designing plays with all these toys is probably like a little kid on Christmas morning :)

I wouldn't make too much of this in OTAs and how the play-calling is going. When was the last time 12 took a snap in OTAs? If LaF was scripting plays in OTAs and wasn't happy with it, it's on him. I'll agree with you, though, in saying that this change could be very liberating for LaF.

I make little of what happens in OTA's. I want to see the offense during the season before making any judgements on LaFleur's "new" scheme.

I just hope it is very different from what the Packers have been running. I usually had a decent idea of what the Packers were going to run in many down and distance situations and if I could do that, league DC's knew exactly what the Packers were going to do. Not a prescription for success.......NFL defenses are just too damn good to give them your playbook beforehand.

He had choice! He choose not to do what he wanted. I made earlier in my life similar mistake. I was renovating my appartment and do it by what I believed what my ex wife want how to be arranged. I got from her very few info how she would like appartment to look like, and that little informations were very general.

When I finished renovation, appartment was not by her, nor by my wish and we both were not satisfied with the result. That was the last time I asked for opinion persons who has not a vision what he/she wants. I'm doing things how I want things to look. From the moment I decide that I may say I did not made mistake, at least for me.

If you are in charge do it how you think it should be done, after all, you are responsible for the result. If your superior insist to involve another person in decision making, you have choice not to accept that. Move on.

Some notes gleaned from around the internet RE: OTAs day 1.

First team group at WR: Watson, Doubs, Toure (motion guy). Reed, Wicks, and Heath with regular snaps

Majority of OL snaps went to Tom, Nijman, Newman, Myers, Walker and Runyan (a lot of cross-training). Sean Rhyan getting work at C.

Enagbare impressive at OLB. Van Ness running with the second group.

Rudy Ford getting initial crack at S next to Savage.

dobber, I think this is the way it'll be. IF HEALTHY, Watson and Doubs start. Toure and Reed will initially be competing for the third spot. At some point during the season, when guys get hurt, I think we'll see Wicks. Our top 3 WRs get the targets, and the rest....not so much.

Those OL players you mentioned, plus Bakhtiari and Jenkins, are our top 8 offensive linemen. Newman #7, Rhyan #8. We'll be fine if people don't miss much time with injuries.

I liked Enagbare last year, and I think that he'll be on the field for us plenty.

Not sure about Rudy Ford at Safety.

NFL Draft in Green Bay -
I really don't get all the people bitching about the Draft being in Green Bay. (Benjamin) Here is the thing. If you don't want to come and you don't have to for work (Benjamin), don't come. Look the NFL wouldn't have allowed it to come to GB if they didn't think they could handle a ton of people. There is absolutely no reason why they can't have it in GB.

Truer Words - were never spoken - from Aaron Jones:
The 2 biggest changes are at QB and K. That is where they had established veterans at those positions for the last 15 years. It will be different. And we have 2 other positions that had major change over at WR and TE. But just because there is change doesn't mean its a rebuild. We could say that they have rebuilt the WR and TE rooms, because at WR the last 2 drafts they have done exactly that. Drafting 6 WR's. And taking 2 TE's high in this draft as well as letting 2 veterans go, definitely have rebuilt both of thos rooms.

"If you think we're in a rebuild then you got the wrong team, wrong place... We know what people are saying, but everybody has an opinion and most of them stink."

OTA Notable Notes:
I saw that Tay WIcks caught a 55 yard bomb. He likes to be called Tay apparently.
I saw that Stokes had a knee and foot injury. He had the Lisfranc injury, which explains why he was never came back. It will be interesting to see if he gets his full speed back.

LaFleur Unleashed -
I think this will only help the team become better.

Keisean is a Bad Man -
Who doesn't like Nixon. But the new rule could definitely have a big impact on kick returns. It will be interesting to see if teams try to do anything differently for them. If there will be some strategies about this. I could see teams trying to take advantage of this rule in someway.

Dontayvion Wicks -
Catching a 55 yard bomb is good way to get in the good graces of the coaches and QB's.

Working on Love -
One thing I have always wondered when you see players working with trainers and whatnot. Are there issues that teams and coaches have with trainers outside of the team? Do teams send players to specific trainers so they are teaching the same types of things? I have always wondered about that.

RCP Fan, Jordan Love got from Tom Clements and MLF instructions on what traits he need to work to be better (not rising his front foot to fingers when he throw the balls is one thing what was pointed out). Jordan Love has his personal QB coach (who also have QB School for young QBs) with whome he is working on the requests made by his team for off season. Team can not direct or suggest players what they will do in their free time. Only what they can is tell the players what to improve before next season starts officially. How player will do that, it is his voluntary right.

Remember Mike McCarthy QB School that helped ACR to develop himself better? That school was shut down on NFL request as some other team camps or open camps organized by different teams.

Great article and agree with pretty much all of the comments. I had not seen that video of Love. Yes, he’s in shorts and does not have a 275 pound monster chasing after him, but you can really see his arm strength. And how he is leading the ball to the receiver. Also, his nimbleness…Rodgers was decent with running on occasion but he was more gimpy the last couple of years. I’m excited to see what Love can do with his legs too.

I can only imagine what the Jets fans are saying right now after Rodger’s practice yesterday. I hope he shakes it off and hits that playing time target for us to get a 1st rounder in 2024!!

Dobber,
Right on point!

Using the whole field is going to liberate the offense. Guys like Reed, Musgrave, and Tucker do not know how blessed they are to becoming a GBP right after AR was removed. Now they actually have opportunities to receive passes thrown their way.

Early Rodgers (circa 2009-14) was a master at reading and finding the opening given to him on a play-by-play basis, wherever that was in the field. If we get close to that read and capitalize approach again, that alone will make things a lot more exciting and challenging for defenses, even if Love isn’t as good at it as Rodgers was after his first year starting.

What year after that did he miss most of the season?

Seemed after that, the Ds had some of his tendencies down and he was never as successful, especially in short yardage and goal line situations. With the new MLF offense it worked in 19 and blossomed in 2020 (gold zone). Then it started being predictable again.

Dobber you clearly don't understand what an interception does to a team. One interception can destroy an entire season!!!! (/sarcasm).

What impresses me the most is his footwork. Everything starts from the ground up. Many years ago, Bill Walsh was asked about what he saw in Joe Montana and the very first thing he mentioned was his quick feet. Cant survive in the pocket if you cant move your feet with grace and balance.

Exciting times!
I'm hoping to stay half an hour from Lambeau, at my brother's house.
I'm not worried at all about "Green Bay" handling the Draft; there are tons of rooms in the Fox River Valley, Appleton in particular, just half an hour away from Lambeau.
Those accommodations just need to supply regular buses to Lambeau for three days.
I'm sure the Packers and Green Bay will make sure there is everything people could want for that weekend. I hope the Lambeau parking lot becomes some sort of special "tail gate experience" that weekend.

I think one thing that's going to happen this year, is we're going to see the play calling be more creative, simply because Rodgers saw his reading of the defense as the "solution."
With a less experienced QB, the "solution" will need to be in the CALL, not the analytical implementation of the call.

The note on thinking of the whole Fox Valley is a good one. I went to college up there (St. Norbert) and whenever I've flown into the Fox Valley for an event, I've flown into Appleton, anyway. Much easier to get in and out of than Austin-Straubel. They've got two years to figure out the capacity issues (if any) and late April in GB is NOT a high tourism time of year.

I would also include Door County which is about an hour from Green Bay. Lots of hotels and restaurants there as it is a summer resort destination and it is a fairly easy drive to Lambeau. And yes, Dobber, there should be lots of vacancies in late April!

I'm sure there will be people staying in Milwaukee for the draft as well. Also could see the bars in Milwaukee having fan shuttles to the draft.

I plan on staying at a friends house which is like 10 minutes from the stadium and bringing my moped so I don't have to worry about parking.

The "solution" will be in the EXECUTION.

Every play can work if the players on the field EXECUTE to their best ability. The rules favor the offense so much that executing with enthusiasm and talent will carry the day.

Sometimes under AR the defense knew what he wanted to do, from the snap count to the routes he favored to the players he tunnel-visioned. AR "out-thinking" the DC and defense on the field was HIS idea of the only thing that could bring success.

There are many paths up the mountain and MLF needs to vary his approach to the summit to attain it.

"LaFleur Unleashed - In a change from previous years, instead of having scripted play installations, LaFleur is calling plays on the fly in the 11-on-11 drills. It's a test to see "how they think on their feet," LaFleur said. I know what LaFleur said, but all I hear is, "I can do what I want now." - This makes me excited.

I cant imagine the weight off of MLF shoulders. I know its completely naive to think an NFL Coach would in any way feel relief at the loss of a 4 time MVP veteran QB in his offense; BUT like all coaches MLF is competitive, not just on the field but in his career. Im sure his ego was grinding looking forward to the day he could run his team the way HE WANTS to run his team. Further im sure he feels that if his coaching tenure is going to end in failure in Green Bay, it might as well end with him in charge and of his own accord. Noone wants to never have a real shot at their jobs success because some aging long term employee (cough cough Rodgers) wont get out of your way.......

Im going to be very hard on MLF this year, and rightfully so. Its been 2 years since we have seen any imagination on offense. Other than his 1st year we havent seen a lot of heart in his coaching, or any fire on the field. Hes been a puppet. I believe in him and I think he gets it right this year with the pre-madonna gone. But he is on a short leash to be sure.

Who was it who said that NFL stands for "not-for-long"? Teams have very short memories, especially if they start to lose.

I think 2020 was the best year for the LaFleur offense and the last real missed-chance at a SB. I think it's clear that there will be a cumulative exhale across the organization, really starting this week with OTAs. Whether it turns into better offense and better team play in general remains to be seen.

"Whether it turns into better offense and better team play in general remains to be seen."

I believe you are right there already has been a cumulative exhale throughout the organization. Whether in front office, the locker room, or on the field. No longer the double standards, the preferential treatment, the diva treatment, or not throwing to the middle of the field. This is a young team eager to prove themselves & they will be extreme fun watching them develop. I have zero doubt they ultimately will become a better offense. The talent is there at every position.

REBELGB!!!! Hells to the YES!!!!

I feel exactly the same. ACR spelled "Career Cock Block" for MLF. Talk about a prickly situation to be stuck with!

What were LaFleur's options? His QB1 he dreamt of coaching was having none of it. One compromise after another compounded upon more, more and more. Murphy stuck LaFleur with him for additional years well after we all witnessed two different offenses in GB. One our HC intended, and the one AR ran.

MLF had zero options but to wait it out. To stall. You could see his heart left him at times trying to coach AR. You know what he did, though? MLF always kept his composure on the sidelines and in public.

Unlike AR.

Personally, I think this entire Packers team saw it the way kids see way more than we might think. They know, and I believe we will see them all respond as if a collective weight of obstruction has been lifted off their shoulders.

Anyone who wants to argue this, all we have to do is point to AR throwing away our playoff hopes in our last appearance to a triple covered Davante Adams EXCLUSIVELY, for an entire 3Q.

We hadn't witnessed our Packers completely co-opted like that since Favre airmailed multiple playoff hopes away...

Ahman Green... Aaron Jones... AJ Dillon... Jamaal Williams... I'll bet they've all got some interesting collective takes. I had the opportunity to speak with Ahman about this very thing when he visited my studio about 8 or 9 years ago.

Ahman Green is really really freaking cool! Another great friend of mine brought him into my studio during a gallery event. I'm a huge fan of his too. I talked extensively with Ahman and Woodson (over a 4 hour afternoon stretch of pool, and he's a total shark & gentleman0, each separate occasions about those kinds of situations under Favre & Rodgers respectively, and all I will say is they themselves were both quite guarded discussing that kind of stuff.

I can tell you this, Charles & I did talk about Ted failing to bring Marshawn Lynch to Green Bay. Did we ever!!! Had a freaking ball just kicking back, playing pool for an entire snowy afternoon at a hotel around the corner from my studio prior to his induction into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017. He taught me a few things about some reds that afternoon too! Great, great guy.

Rode the train up to Milwaukee from Chicago one afternoon with William Henderson. He was much the same, as is LeRoy Butler whom I've seen at a number of events.

I know Santana & Gilbert a lot better. and all I'm gonna say there is DAYUMMM those dudes are fun. I've known Santana the longest, more than a decade. Just great guys. When I see them we rarely talk Packers. Pretty funny.

No. I'm from Milwaukee, born & raised. Lived out west for a good stretch of my life and moved back 19 years ago. I'm glad I did. Been great being immersed in the homeland again.

Duder, I'll hook up with you anytime. Often take the train down to Chicago, as it is insanely easy for me with the station just down the street from my place of business in Milwaukee's Third Ward.

If you're ever in Milwaukee, pop on into my studio/gallery on the corner of Water & Buffalo Streets. It's the only art gallery in the world with a disco ball whirling and Black Sabbath et al (depending on the day, the moment) playing at high decibels.

LOL. Welcome to my world. I paint, and while I let layers dry, I post.

ps. I'm still waiting on Edgar Bennett! One of these days. I have known a lot of athletes from our teams here over the years. Last year I met Robin Yount before he & his son left on a motorcycle trip from Mexico to Canada, and look forward to his return this summer. John Hammond, GM of the Bucks back in the day used to bring coffees down in the morning before shoot arounds... back when he drafted Giannis! Looking back on this experience, wow! Pretty fun stuff, The_Baloney_Stops_Here! I feel very fortunate being here, and you're welcome anytime... that goes for all of my CHTV friends.

I don’t recall reading this much over exaggerated excitement about the first day of OTAs (open to the media). That people are this excited by guys in shorts catching passes in non contact etcetera is as ridiculous as it is revealing.

The level of excitement heading into this season is palpable, and, it seems to me, not because of some dreamy belief that we are world beaters in 2023, but because of the possibilities of individuals and this roster moving forward. That’s really good to see and sends a very strong message for me.

yeah, croat. Never thought it would go there.

My point simply that I believe as Coldworld pointed out that there is an enormous enthusiasm for this 2023 Packers team, one shared not only by the fans, but by the players themselves. Al pointed that out in his piece with Aaron Jones' comments, and we've heard same from others on this team.

***I think this Packers team will hit the ground running in more ways than one, and has the potential to shock the NFL world.

Maybe not the entire NFL world, as they league gave the Packers how many primetime/holiday games?

WOW. I think the NFL higher ups might see what's cookin' here in Green Bay, and they like it too!

The funniest part in all of this is I've yet to read a single report on Packers OTAs!!! That is SO unlike me.

I've studied all of our new players extensively and I like what I've seen, every dang one of them. I think they all have opportunities to contribute this season. Roster yet to shake out. So much ahead of us right now. I'll be driving up for that first practice open to the public. That's for sure.

Whatever. We'll see when the rubber meets the road.

Good morning, LeotisHarris!

If I'm not mistaken, I think he's been with armedanddangerous for over 3 years now. Been watching his work there for each of those years, and maybe 4 now? I can't recall exactly.

It's always been a treat to see him in action, even if it's doing drill work. Thinking back to those times it was unimaginable we'd have another top QB in line to take over for AR... then seeing his armed videos...!!!! I think those were some of the first we saw of Love in any kind of action after his being drafted.

Exciting stuff to see, always. I'm a practice geek. Love seeing how players develop over a span of years.

Also worth noting, Tyler Dunne over at Go Long TD has covered Love and Calhoun's relationship pretty extensively. He's done some great articles about Love's growth and development through the years. You need a subscription but its worth it. Dunne gets a lot of flack from Packer fans but I love his writing. He humanizes the players in a way few others do. Interestingly, Acmepacking didn't report the same starters for WR and TE on day 1:

"In team drills, according to Herman, second-year receiver Romeo Doubs got the nod over second-round rookie Jayden Reed in two-receiver sets. Josiah Deguara, the only veteran with significant experience at the position on offense, was the starting tight end over second-round pick Luke Musgrave and third-round pick Tucker Kraft."

Maybe it was a different day than Jersey Al is referring to but what I've read elsewhere indicated that overall none of the rookies were starters with the 1s out of the gate.

This is a perfect description of what MLF is now in a position to do with Jordan Love. Love is not going to be a part-time QB/GM/HC and LaFleur knows this. Love is more likely to play according to the weekly game plan and the overall framework of the offense. As he gains more experience as a starter, he may do more “free lancing,” but I don’t expect to see that for a couple of seasons yet.

To give credit where credit is due, it seems there was a time when it was a lot of fun watching Rodgers freelance to great effectiveness -- including, if I recall correctly, a spin move in the pocket after which he scampered toward the right sideline to buy time for a throw downfield.
It seems at some point it became too much of a good thing, which is a bad thing.

There are a lot of great memories of Rodgers out there to be recollected and revisited sometime in the future, although now is too soon.

There's something to be said for executing plays and dictating what the D has to do, not reacting to what they want to do.

Shove it down their throats and when they start stopping you go the in another direction.
