Hello Wisconsin: The Bye Week Came at Exactly the Right Time
Some R&R is much needed at this point of the season.
By TimBackes
Yikes.

There’s not a whole lot to be said about the Green Bay Packers’ performance against the Detroit Lions this past week that hasn’t been said on here and elsewhere already, so I don’t want to dwell on it too much.
It was bad. Really bad.
And despite how bad it was, the game still should have been winnable, which is perhaps even more infuriating.
But I’m not going to dwell on what was; you guys have had enough of that on here already this week. Instead, as we’re in the midst of the bye week, I want to focus a bit more on where things can go from here.
As with any loss, the various green and gold corners of the internet were outraged, with many ready to throw the towel in on the season and calling for people to be fired. Which is, of course, ridiculous. This team is significantly better than it was in the first half of the season in both record and performance. While it has yet to hit its stride the way it did in the later portion of the 2023 season, there’s absolutely no reason to think it can’t do so again.
The most frustrating part about this team is actually that it is so talented and that the moments of excellence are so obvious, but that they’re still so inconsistent. Many of us had hoped, coming into this year, that despite having the youngest roster in the league once again, the Packers would at least be a bit more battle tested and disciplined.
Instead, what we get is a team that makes the same mistakes over and over again, without really seeming to learn from them. We see it in penalties, poor throws, and boneheaded defensive mistakes (which, to be fair, have come at a FAR lower rate than they did under Joe Barry).
This, combined with the banged up nature of the team… yeah, this is about the best possible time for a bye week.
The Packers need a good self scout to prepare for the crucial next stretch of their season. Most of their divisional matchups remain, and right now they’re in an 0-2 hole, something that hasn’t happened to this team much at all over the last several decades.
When you watch this team play, it is clear the pieces are in place for them to contend. When everything is rolling, they can stick with anyone in the league.
There’s no real magic trick or hidden secret for them to get there, either. Really, it’s just cut the mistakes. If they trim down the penalties and cut the turnovers in half, that right there does enough to get this team deep into the playoffs.
Beyond that, it’s a good mixture of consistency and luck.
I was a bit bemused by some of the vocal responses on Twitter earlier this week, with people really being down on this team’s chances. We’ve hardly seen anything yet in terms of what this team is capable of. Just remember how much they picked it up in mid-November a year ago. If they do that again, but starting from this point, I’m not sure there’s a team in the league that can match up.
Hopefully some rest, healing, and tape time will do this team some good.
Because next week, it’s Bears week.
Wisconsin Beer of the Week

I’ve brought up Supermoon Beer Company in this space several times, and while it’s been a bit since I bought anything new from them, I do still have a whole bunch of offseason brews I can feature in this space to catch up on, since I haven’t added anything new to my fridge for a few weeks.
This particular beer is their farmhouse radler. Many of you are probably familiar with the radler style; it’s a very traditional German beer that is mixed with some form of fruit juice (like grapefruits, often). Stiegl Radler is an example, a great one I had all over Germany and Austria when I was there years back. Usually it’s a blond lager like a pilsner or helles that serves as the base for the beer.
Supermoon’s thing is farmhouse ales, so they kind of twisted the radler style by using a saison base. And it works well! It’s a VERY slightly heavier base with a bit of a sweeter and funkier flavor to underlie the fruit. It’s an ale rather than a lager, which is also part of that flavor difference.
While it wasn’t my favorite radler I’ve had, it was fun to get a new twist on the style. Supermoon is doing some really cool stuff here in Milwaukee, and this was just another example of a beer that I would absolutely recommend to visitors who came across it.
If you are near Milwaukee and haven’t been, go check out their Bay View tap room sometime!
Farewell to Preston Smith
Preston Smith was the last remaining player of the big four free agency signings of the summer of 2019. In the time since, he's been a consummate professional for the Packers and contributed a whole lot of great plays and memories.
It sucks to see him traded, but he was clearly playing out of position in a 4-3. According to Smth on Wednesday, he actually asked to be traded a couple weeks ago.
It's hard to blame him; now that he's starting to get on in the years of his career, he probably wants to maximize the time he hast left playing professional football by being in a scheme that actually fits him. Pittsburgh's 3-4, then, would seem to be an ideal fit.
Meanwhile, the Packers are going to need to figure out where they're going to get additional production from at the edge spot. While they do benefit greatly in terms of getting out of Smith's contract, this is currently a position of weakness on the team. Rashan Gary is going to have to play better, and Lukas Van Ness is going to have to make the big strides forward the team was envisioning when they made him their first round pick in 2023.
Around the NFC North
As always, it’s time to go around the NFC North.
- The CHICAGO BEARS are starting to see some of the shine come off their hot start. They were easily dispatched by the Cardinals this past weekend, and had some absolutely atrocious offense. Caleb Williams was 22-41 for just 217 yards, and the team just could not move the ball consistently. They’ve got a game they should win against the Patriots this weekend at home, and a failure to do so could be catastrophic with the Packers on their schedule next weekend.
- The DETROIT LIONS are without doubt the best team in the league, and yet they weren’t outrageously impressive against the Packers this weekend; certainly, had the Packers not been hell-bent on committing the same mistakes over and over again, this team would have been in jeopardy of losing. But they didn’t, and good teams win games even when they don’t play their best football. What was wild to me: this was the first time the Lions had played an outdoor game this entire season. Insane.
- The MINNESOTA VIKINGS got back on track against the Colts and picked up a hard-fought home victory. Back at second place in the division, fans are hoping the team’s two-game skid was an aberration and that this Vikings team can get back to the dominance it displayed in much of September and early October. If they can, this is going to be a hell of a divisional race through the next couple months.
This or That in Mr. Backes’s classroom: Week 9
As some of you may recall, last year I started doing weekly “this or that” polls on the whiteboard in my classroom at school for laughs. I decided to make it a weekly part of this column to keep you updated on what the youths are saying these days about entirely unimportant issues.
Here are some of the results from the last week:
- Hot chocolate defeated hot apple cider
- Billie Eilish defeated Taylor Swift
- Ham defeated turkey
- Writing essays defeated giving presentations
I’ll continue to keep you updated on the most pressing issues of our time.
Stepping back in time at Three Brothers MKE
My wife and I had a rare opportunity to go out on a date and leave the kids at home with a babysitter. We went bowling and then had dinner at a place I’ve been wanting to go to for quite some time: Three Brothers, a Serbian restaurant in Bay View.
Entering through their doors is like stepping back in time. The decor feels like something you’d have expected to see decades ago. They have a cassette tape player for music behind the bar. The bar itself is long, old fashioned, and impressive. There aren’t that many tables. There are old-fashioned beer signs. They don’t accept credit card.
The menu itself is packed full of items that feel like they would be cooked at home by a Serbian grandma for a nice family dinner, and I mean that in the absolute best way possible.
We had a quick appetizer course that featured a Serbian salad and stuffed grape leaves. I’d never had stuffed grape leaves before, and they were SO good.
The entree I had was “Branko’s Special,” featuring a piece of Sarma and a stuffed pepper with tomato sauce and potato dumpling. Just delicious.
My wife and I were talking with each other at the restaurant about the lack of really authentic European restaurants like that in Milwaukee these days. There’s Mader’s downtown and Kegel’s in West Allis. There’s a couple legit French places. But it really does feel like these sorts of places are getting fewer and farther between.
Part of it is that we are getting more and more removed from the generations of immigrants who founded many of these types of establishments. Milwaukee has some significant German and Polish roots, and a whole lot of other ethnicities also represented in the cities, but the bulk of people who came here from those European countries did so generations ago, meaning that for people my age and younger, we’re probably a couple generations removed. These places seeming to be not as common any more is almost certainly tied to that.
So while they’re still here, I intend to enjoy the heck out of places like this, because they feel like a window into Milwaukee’s past.

As for the Smith trade. This was good for both sides. He is back in the 3-4 and the Packers get cap space the next two years. The young guys get a chance to show what they are made of.
The Lions are not the best team in the league. The Chiefs are and they show it every week. They are undefeated for a reason.

True based on evidence: the record and all the data. But, if they both match up, I'll take the Lions....because I think they would beat the chiefs in a game tomorrow even if the chiefs are a "better" team.....so that is the wierdness of what is best, better. They are but they wouldn't. We'll see...if they both continue the same trajectories....we'll see in February!@. I would enjoy watching that matchup...and would be rooting for Detro. I like what they got.

Yes- the Bye came in time.
And yes- We see how good the division is.
So instead of dreaming of a dynasty.
The Packers got brought back to earth.
But because we're fans, we like are chances?.
Well - Lombardi never left anything to chance.
And Gute's vision is becoming a mirage.
The packers have become a team of entertainment.
They are fun to watch. And they make money.
To management, That might be good enough.
But just because business is good.
The success of it is slipping away.

We're 0-2.in the Div.
Gute doesn't follow any draft guide.
No-one knows what he'll do.
Yet it's so obvious.
Spend money on your mistakes.
And don't worry about the lack of All-pros
on your team. Keep rebuilding.

How exactly is Gute responsible for being 0 and 2 in the division? Because he drafted Love? Gute doesn’t control who on the roster plays, preparation, discipline, game plans or in game decisions.
If you don’t think this roster is capable of being better than it has been then you didn’t watch the last half of last season. The difference is that this year we are not putting it together. Part of that is playing Love injured like we did with Rodgers and part is we persist with giving snaps to players who aren’t justifying it: Wicks and Q. Walker.
This roster isn’t perfect, but it’s good enough to have a lot better in terms of wins. You are looking in the wrong place for explanations.

""If you don’t think this roster is not capable of being better than it has been then you didn’t watch the last half of last season"""
OK, a triple-negative. I'm completely confused. What if I DO think this roster is NOT Capable? If I understand your intent, you think this team should/could be capable if being better than it was the last half of last season, and I agree.
But after I decoded that, you hit me with ""....a lot better in terms of wins"
And this leaves me confused. We're 6-3. One of those games was a season opener where none of the starters had played in the season. We followed that with a 6-1 stretch, losing only to Minnesota, and then now to Detroit.
So, how much better are we talking about? Lots? Like we should be 9-0 based on what we showed last season? 8-1? 7-2 doesn't really seem like "a lot better".
Then you point to the 'difference': ""The difference is that this year we are not putting it together"
Actually, the difference is that at this point last season, we were 3-6, and now we're 6-3, so we're putting it together more quickly than last year. If you only want to compare the last half of last year to the first half of this year, we were 6-3 in the last half of the season last year, and we were 6-3 in the first half of this season.
And of course,if we had played Willis instead of Rodgers, we'd have won the Minnesota game. Despite Rodgers throwing 4TDs and getting 400 yards, we'd have won that with Willis. You know that. I don't.
And then...and I dislike it when you do that.....you start focusing the blame on two trees, Wicks and Walker, because they aren't as good as you think they should be. And as always, you can't wrap it up without a veiled shot at LaFleur.
Here's an explanation: Football is a team game, and you have to deal with new personnel, new coaches, injuries, etc. I've never seen a single Championship won in September or October, not even a by a 6-3 team which seems like it should be better than the record . If the Packers pull it together in the back half of the season and the stretch run like they did last year, we're going to be right in the middle of it, and LaFleur will be a big reason why.

I didn't say Gute was responsible for the 0-2.
The Division has better teams now because of GUTE.
Thats the difference!
You don't think. - Gute does not walk on Water!
Always assumptions with your analysis.
Lets get it right CW.
MLF is not to blame, As you Constantly suggest.
MLF has to play Love.
MLF has to keep playing his All-pros
in different positions.
Whether it be suspensions, injuries, or a change in defense.
Take your attack elsewhere.
THE Lions would never have jumped ahead of the
packers; if it wasn't for Gute's poor TIMING.
( on Roster movement! )
Let alone; letting certain players fall to them.
We had those same Needs!

November 07, 2024 at 03:20 pm
The roster is as deep from top to bottom as it has been in over a decade. Gute does not walk on water, no one has claimed he’s perfect, no GM is. All GMs miss more than they hit… with that said, when you evaluate the roster, Gutekunst is not a problem for the Packers, he’s a net positive.
You have misplaced anger issues.

Are these guys really studying and self-scouting during this week or are they getting extra time off? It would be great to see some of these guys get together on their own and self-scout together.
I think that although it won't be easy by a long shot, the second half team will get better as these guys, especially Love get healthy and are able to get all the normal practice time together. The O-line needs to stay set and Jacobs will rock. The rest will flow from there.

November 07, 2024 at 07:59 am
I would hope that there’s a lot of self scouting on the part of the off field staff. About who should be getting snaps, why the offense has sputtered. About whether we need to reassess our philosophies on both lines and how we use CBs. Hafley seems to adjust continually, but unless forced, the O less so. Now is the time for LaFleur to take a leaf out of Hafley’s book. Both need to recalibrate playing time at key positions for the coming half of the season.

The CBA requires the players to be off from Thursday through Sunday. They can work on their own on those days. The coaches should be self scouting the team and their own performance.

Farewell to Preston Smith -
I will miss Smith. He was a great player and a great teammate. He definitely will be missed. He definitely didn't fit into the defense though. It kind of reminded me of when they brought in Capers and it forced Kampman to switch positions. It just didn't work. I feel like the Packers did him a nice favor trading him to the Steelers. He goes to a defense that will fit his skills and he will play opposite of Watt.
Around the NFC North -
The CHICAGO BEARS
- Williams maybe a good QB down the road but he is a rookie who was handed the keys. I'm just a believer that a rookie QB, shouldn't be handed everything, and shouldn't play until they are completely ready.
The DETROIT LIONS
- The Lions are a very good team. They are definitely one of NFC's best. Now that being said, the Packers didn't lose because of the Lions. They lost because of themselves. They had 6 drops, 1 for sure was a TD. They also had an insane amount of penalties.
The MINNESOTA VIKINGS
- They got a hard fought win against the Colts. The Colts who turned to their 39 year old back up QB. Vikings have been fine and have a weak schedule, but they are not a juggernaut team.

"The Lions are a very good team. They are definitely one of NFC's best."
They are peaking in November. It's hard to maintain that for 2.5 more months. They'll run into a team that's peaking in January and get burned...maybe the Packers?
The first three years LaF was in place, the first and second halves of the season were pretty similar, but those were 13-win seasons. The last two, they've started slow (3-6 in 2022 and 2023), and finished stronger (5-3 down the stretch in 2022 and 6-2 in 2023). I think we can have hope that this team will at least continue to play at a similar pace (that's still 11-6 or better) or maybe even get better over the last 8 games. Before the season started, I was guessing 9-8 again this year based on schedule, more competitive division, defensive changes, etc., but I think we can all agree that 9-8 would be a disappointment.

November 07, 2024 at 10:17 am
Yeah I completely agree with that.
Teams a lot of times simply plateau. I feel like that is the Lions. They have reached the top and have plateaued. You are exactly right that they have hit that peak early. You want to be hitting it at the end of the year.
Teams will catch up to them.
I feel like GB is a team that could hit their groove later in the year. They are the youngest team again. Love has missed a few games and has not been healthy since. The defense is still trying to figure out the new system. And Hafley is still trying to figure out its best players and how to use them.
I think this bye has come at a great time to give them basically half the season to review everything and come back and make the corrections/changes that they need to make a strong run.

I recall McCarthy stating after a bye week he did a lot of self scouting and announced in a presser it was clear they needed to run the ball more and implement more play action snaps.
Then he did neither.
Regarding Smith, he was a great Packer. Hard working and available. He wasn't going to be a Packer in 2025. He proactively asked the Packers to trade him to a 3-4 team and Gutey complied because there is a lot of mutual respect.
Good luck Preston! You are good football player and an even better man.

Lambeauplain, regarding McCarthy self scout/statements/ lack of follow through::
Congratulations, you have identified some of the early signs of Aaron Rodgers’ going rogue and ignoring his coaching and / or coaches’ playcalling.
MM would frequently talk in post game and mid-week pressers about the failure of the ground game and that it starts with the number of attempts- and then nothing would change the following week.
Who would continually tell the public there is an issue, it needs to be corrected, this is how you correct it… and then, week in and week out. Not correct it? Answer: nobody. MM knew the issue, Rodgers refused to make the correction.

Packers played a schedule up through this point where their opponents are currently +6 in the win column. They've beaten two teams that are over .500 through this point and all 3 losses have come to teams currently ahead of them in the playoff standings. Over the last 8 games of this season, the Packers' opponents currently are a combined .500, but a few will likely be trending up (SF, Mia). Others certainly will be trending down. I guess the take home is that I'm not going to condemn this team based on a mistake-ridden game against a team that has been burning white-hot over the last month. I want to see how they respond after the bye. One game at a time. Beat the effin' Bears, please.
I think what this really comes down to is our questioning who this team is at this point:...are they better than a year ago? Are they worse? Are they a legit contender? Most of us want immediate gratification and immediate results...well, last year after 9 games, they were 3-6...same in 2022. I'm not terribly surprised this team doesn't appear to have it all figured out. Much like a year ago, it's better to be peaking late than early. Self-scout stuff happens all the time, every week...I'm more interested in healing some bumps, bruises, and sprains, and rebuilding the energy level.
Preston Smith was one of my favorite Packers: a team-first guy who played every week and was a quality family and community guy. He's not a highlight reel guy and was always going to be the Robin in pass rush to someone else's Batman, but he took renegotiations and pay cuts in stride (which very few of us would do in our jobs) and kept strapping it on. That said, he wasn't moving the needle at this point. If we come back and say, "he was one of their most productive pass-rushers," we need to consider that--with the exception of one game--the pass rush has been pretty blasé and something significant needed to change. Give them credit for taking an opportunity. This was a change for the better for both sides: Smith wasn't going to be back in 2025. The Packers needed to try something different without benching and humiliating a well-liked guy...and remember: Smith asked for a trade. Best wishes to him.
Around the NFCN--
People bitch about the Packers' coaching staff, but there's something in the water in Chicago that makes Packers' coaches look like Mensa members by comparison. Maybe it's bugs...my dad's family lived mostly in Elgin area and they said that in 50s, tap water came mostly from the river and that it was often brown and with chunks and bugs in it. The Bears will struggle until they cut Williams loose. Most of his passes travel 5 yards downfield or less (they did the same thing with Fields), and he's chained to a RB who has one of the lowest run success rates in the league and an OL that gets worse every week. Low air yards plus 3rd and long plus coaches trying to save their jobs = poor outcomes. It might be that if they cut Williams loose, he might get beat up behind his shoddy OL and his tape may make Love's bad INTs look smart, but they're going nowhere, he has guys to throw to, and they supposedly have a creative OC.
The Lions are burning hot right now. They did last year for a stretch, too. It's hard to maintain that over a full season and playoffs. They'll have a few games where they'll get smoked, yet, and be eminently beatable, but they now have essentially a 2-game lead in the division and have a schedule where they play 3 of their AFCS teams. They'll be hard to catch.
The Vikings are moving the ball, but their run game with AJones has faded and they lost their cornerstone LT. They struggled to beat the Colts at home...a Colts team that they grossly outgunned. This team will be up and down the rest of the way, but their remaining schedule is soft as cream cheese.

Williams does not seem to have an internal clock. he's a college qb in the pocket, thinking he can just wait until something breaks open. if they cut him loose he's going to be the biggest turnover machine in football.

Re: the Preston Smith trade, I was impressed with his approach; he asked for a trade and it happened quietly.
I am not so impressed with the narrative that we need to see what the 'youngsters' can bring to the Pass Rush.
Perhaps, Mosby will emerge, maybe Cox, but we already know LVN is not it and my concern is GB is not really taking this weakness (ranked 30th) seriously. There seems to be a bit of foot-dragging and a commitment to only tinkering around the edges (pun intended).
This approach seems underwhelming when the team is facing stronger opponents in the second half.
Most of the criticisms are focused on Jordan Love and I think he deserves some of it but he has been injured and is likely going to improve. What I don't care for is the over-looking of two very important position groups who are so under-performing that I consider it a bit alarming-Corners & Pass Rush.
Perhaps, I'm in the minority, but if I see a distinct weakness and no real attempt to address it in real time, i will make my own business decisions, lower my expectations and my interest level will follow.
The Lions made a move because they are a 'win now' team-Z. Smith is a smart but temporary move. We couldn't have found a one-year dude to add some juice to the DL?

"I am not so impressed with the narrative that we need to see what the 'youngsters' can bring to the Pass Rush."
I'd just say that what's going on now isn't good enough, so something needed to change. I think Enagbare has earned more snaps. I think Brooks has shown some effectiveness sliding out to DE.
NFLfan
November 07, 2024 at 09:37 am
@Dobber-yes, something needed to change, but we've already seen what Enagbare brings.
The DL needs an overhaul and I get they won't do that mid-season, but I didn't see anything wrong w/bringing in someone with energy for 1 year. I wouldn't have chosen Z Smith for a number of reasons, but the Lions will definitely get their money's worth from him for those several months.
He will make a huge difference.
dobber
November 07, 2024 at 10:04 am
I think that if they limit his snaps, keep him fresh, and use him mostly on passing downs, then--yes--that will put a better edge-setter on the field on early downs and let Z chase the QB (which is what he's best suited to do at this point). If they play him as mostly a full-time player and force him to play more run downs, they'll be giving something away, too. We'll see.

You and Dobber are bringing up good points. Do you realize this D (front and back) just gave up only 17 points to one of the best teams right now in the NFL?
That's just a couple tweaks and returning injured players from a top D peaking in the second half of the season as Dobber would prefer it.
Don't you agree that the losses are more on the O, STs and sloppy play?

since last year, the problems are offense. why people don't see that is a mystery. They stumble and wind up kicking field goals. They miss said field goals. The play calling is charitably, mysterious. Once LaFleur crosses the fifty his nuts suck back into his abdominal cavity.

November 07, 2024 at 04:22 pm
IT goes back farther than that.
2020.....0-6 in goal-to-go passing, plus the two big turnovers that led to 14 points.
2021....A HISTORICALLY BAD performance. In over 60 playoff games in their career, the Packers were only held to 10 or less about 5 times. We lost them all.
2022: At home at the last day of the season, needing a win, we could only put up 16 points against the league's worst defense. We lost, our season was over, and it was Aaron Rodgers last game as a Packer.
But we can keep blaming it on the defense, or special teams.

which is why it's a mystery to me that you think LaFleur a great coach. I thought he had turned a corner the second half of last season, but the offense still sputters where it should purr.

Maybe, just maybe, the team management thinks this team is a year or two away from being a real super bowl contender. I think it's prudent to proceed with caution before going all in with this team. They are not there yet.

I had high hopes this team would make a deep playoff run. Those hopes are very tempered now. At the bye week they are in the NFCN third spot and tbh that’s where I believe they will end up. There is a very good chance this years playoff run does not occur- at all. The Lions are one of the best teams in the League. The Vikings are no juggernaut but they replaced the injured left tackle in a trade and are getting healthier with the return of Hockenson. They have a soft schedule. The Bears are what they are. The Rams, Seahawks, Niners, Commanders, Eagles and Bucs or Falcons will join the Vikings and Lions in post season play. To hope on a wing and a prayer that this team will just flip the switch and repeat last years run is foolish. There is zero guarantee that Love will fix his hero ball mentality or that his knee and groin don’t continue to limit his mobility and fluidity of throwing motion. The cornerback room is a mess and the pass rush non existent. Stokes has given 3.5 years of blah. JA gives 3.5 games out of 10 of above average play. The WR group aside from Reed and Doubs are nothing special. Watson may as well be hurt for what he provides this year. Jacob’s is a workhorse but can he take this amount of pounding for a full 17 game season? Hopefully Gutey is spending this week in meetings with both offensive coordinators and with his DC Hafley to work out a draft strategy for April. This is a 10-7 or 9-8 team and will be drafting in the low 20s spot.

That's a pretty dire assessment of a 6-3 team. I am not hoping "on a wing and a prayer" that this team will do better in the second half (heck, even if they do a little worse, they will finish 11-7), I'm hoping based on their talent level, coaching, and last year's performance down the stretch. Every year, there are teams that improve in the second half of the season and make a run in the playoffs. I really doubt that the coaching staff is spending the bye week working on a draft strategy for April.

If Gute and the coaching staff will be (they won't) spending the bye week working out a draft strategy for 2025, they're in the wrong line of work. They need to be focusing on how to best maximize their team's effort over the remaining 8 games on the schedule.
To suggest that this is not a play-off team at 6-3 with 8 games remaining is premature and rather silly.

As it stands the squad is the seven seed in the NFC. The Rams and Niners are 4-4 with very winnable games this week. The former are getting both their star WRs back and the latter sees the return of the best RB in the league. If they both win they are both one game back for the 7th seed. Again, one cannot project another magical run like last year. The record and standings are who you are. This squad is no better than a seventh seed and I stand by my statement that the playoffs will probably not include the Packers.

"The record and standings are who you are. This squad is no better than a seventh seed..."
I agree. They are currently the 7th seed, which puts them in the playoffs. Your argument makes no sense.

Tim, I moved from Menomonee Falls to Tucson just shy of 20 years ago. Back when I lived in Wisconsin, we loved to go to all the "hidden gem" ethnic places in and around Milwaukee. At that time Three Brothers was one of our favorites. "Stepping back in time" is an understatement. All the (few) tables had mismatched plates and silverware, the bathroom opened directly into the dining space and the grandma (whom I'm sure is now long gone) would occasionally wander in from elsewhere in the building to use the facilities. The food (The Food!) was amazing! I don't know what the menu holds these days, but the Burek and other dishes were mouth-wateringly good. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. The place sounds like it's still the size of a postage stamp (and I remember it was tricky to find) but well, well, worth the effort of searching out. Glad to hear it survived the pandemic; so many restaurants did not. There's another Serbian restaurant called Old Town which is good, but I always felt Three Brothers was better. I can still see in my mind the mis-matched chinaware and assorted styles of silverware in front of each chair with a tray of steaming, mouthwatering entrees in the tables center. Very, very, fond memories of meals there!
I wish Preston Smith loads of luck; he was the penultimate Packer fan player. He quietly agreed to team friendly pay restructures (a lot of fans are always clamoring for players to do this, but I wonder how many of them would do so if it was them!), was from all accounts a great locker-room presence and mentor for his team-mates. One of the really "nice guys" to play the game.

NFL.com claimed the addition of Z Smith to the lions was a solid move mostly because he is a great locker room presence.
Really? He wasn't in the Green Bay locker room. His own teammates fired him as team captain.
The Ugly purple let him walk too.

He was a locker room leader when he first came to town...I'd argue the defensive additions of P.Smith, Amos, and Z. Smith helped turn the locker room from the foul feel of the end of the McCarthy era.
Sometimes the warm fuzzies don't last...

Z adds tremendous energy to any team for several months (until he wears out his welcome.)
The Lions understand this phenomenon. He is a short-term rental

They should have traded AJ Dillon, too. Vic Ketchman was right: Dillon is an average back who is slow.
AJ Dillon: 3.4 yards/carry (2023)
Patrick Taylor: 4.4 yards/carry (2023)
Aaron Jones: 4.6 yards/carry (2023)
*Josh Jacobs: 4.4 yards/carry (*2024)
Emanuel Wilson: 6.1 yards/carry (2023)
*MarShawn Lloyd: 7.1 yards/carry (*college 2023)

Nice idea, but who would want him bad enough to trade for him? Even if i thought Dillon had some sort of value, i’d wait until the Packers let him go.

Correct: he's on season-ending IR since he was IR'd before the cutdowns to 53. I believe the Packers can release him from IR and he could play this season somewhere else....but this guy continues to post that they should've traded him, and isn't paying attention.

You're right. They should just cut him because he's worthless.

Tim:
Your article conjured up two memories: one good, the other not so good.
Good: A family dinner at Three Brothers (back in the 60's); the food was significantly different from your usual central Wisconsin Supper Club, and quite a treat.
Bad: McCarthy's comment of the Packers doing a self scouting prior to the 2014 NFC championship debacle. If, indeed it was done, they missed a key point the Seahawks exploited: When Brad Jones lined up for extra point/FG kicks, he would "cheat" and cut inside. This allowed the Seahawks to simply call a fake field goal, and run around the end. The rest is history.

An average back who is slow, who never fumbles, and usually doesn't miss games or practices with injuries, and who is assignment sure.
