Gut Reactions: Packers beat Lions, win NFC North

Aaron gives his gut reactions to the Packers win over the Lions.

  • I know this isn't breaking news but it's going to be hard for the Packers to win a championship with this defense.
  • That MVS touchdown catch was god level
  • Kamal Martin needs to be starting. I understand he's a rookie, but I'll live with the mistakes.
  • Chandon Sullivan. Woof.
  • Good to see Tavon Austin get involved.
  • Way, way, way too many penalties.
  • Rashan Gary was a terror coming of that edge on that sack
  • This defense needs a serious lesson on turning screens back into the pursuit.
  • Manenga ain't it.
  • In the second half, it was pretty clear LaFleur knew his defense wasn't up to the task and decided to take the air out of the game
  • The Packers clearly thought they could get something going between the tackles in the run game. They could not.
  • I get that they want to save Aaron Jones "for the stretch run" but aren't they...in the stretch run?
  • If you're going to play 10 yards off Davante, Rodgers will take it thank you very much.
  • Why does this team have to make everything so difficult?
  • Even though they hate me, I still love this team.
  • Go Pack Go.

Offense has to be perfect.
That's a lot of pressure.
That's not complementary football.
That won't get it done.

The D made several stops today. Was it awesome? No. But it wasn't a bottom 10 defense either. Detroilet had a total dead cat bounce today. They played really hard, gutsy football. Like they had nothing to lose. Plus, we have struggled at Ford field the last several years.

Tell me: How did KC's defense look today? What about NOs? Bad games happen. Look. They're not great. But they're not AWFUL (unlike the coverage units on STs). You can win a SB with a great offense and a mediocre defense.

My point is that they won. And while it was a 1 possession game, I never got the feeling they weren't in control. They are currently sitting in the 1 seed - somewhere they haven't been since 2011. NO has KC while we have CAR. It's entirely likely that we'll be up 2 (effectively) with 2 to play.

We're in a good spot. Is it a Lombardi guarantee? Nope. But we're in a good spot.

I agree, the top teams all have defenses which are torchable. Even NO who statistically has a good defense was torched by Philly and by us. The concern is special teams. Man are they bad. I would be fine if they gave vets the week off and only focused on kick coverage. Your weaknesses are exploited in the playoffs and the Packers need to figure out kick coverage.

The only way to not expose the kickoff coverage is to have Mason Crosby kick it out of the endzone and J.K. Scott punt the ball with good yardage and hangtime. A tough task at cold Lambeau.

The Rams, Redskins, Saints, Bills, Dolphins, Steelers, Colts, Ravens and Cle all have pretty good defenses, clearly better than GB. If GB goes all the way I will be thrilled and surprised.

Good assessment Bearmeat.

Also, the Steelers is supposed to have the best Defense this year. What happened last night? So yeah, having the best defense does not mean you win every game. Every team has to play all 3 phases... the net result is whichever team scores more points wins (whether by offense, defense or ST).

Packers are winning, on a 3W streak. The Steelers are on a 2 loss streak. Better to start strong and finish stronger than to start all-conquering and deteriorate down the stretch.

Due to Pettine’s design the pack defense is soft and cushy like the stay puff marshmallow man . I saw # 91 drop into coverage again . Receivers are open by at least 5 yards on almost every play . 12 men on the field. Not sure why the time out before the flag in the first half. Guessing 12 men on the field then too. This is the defensive coordinator’s fault. Fire his ass. Buy two tickets at the railroad station for him and the special teams coordinator. If not for Rodgers and Mason Crosby ,defense and special teams lose this game.

Every 3-4 team drops LBs into coverage, including OLBs. That's not an indictment of a DC. I agree there are more than enough other reasons to fire Pettine after the season, but dropping OLBs isn't one of them.

Preston looked a little pudgy earlier this season, not sure if that's why he got beat more often this year in coverage.

So your the head coach. You call a time out. You stand on the side line and do nothing instead of bringing your team over and going over what is expected and a quick review of the rules like oh ' IF THE BALL GOES MORE THEN TEN YARDS ITS ANYONE BALL YOU IDIOTS SO JUMPING ON IT MIGHT BE A DAM GOOD IDEA. The Lions came dam close to getting that ball before it went outa bounds.

MVS BALLED OUT today. I love how Rodgers went to him right away, early and often. His TD catch was a thing of beauty.

Congrats to Davante Adams... 8 straight games with a TD and another game over 100 receiving yards. If this guy isn't 1st team All-Pro I call for drug testing of every voter!

Loved how MLF went to the run in the 2nd half. Aaron Jones had 4 carries in the first half. Different story in the 2nd half.

All the wrs gotta do is go get it. And we will drop 30. If this d can get enough sacks and maybe a pick we can hold teams under 30.

Amos has turned his play up a notch or three last five games.
Savage as well.
Lowry has some apparent utility lately.
Some wrote King got picked on; I thought he held up okay.
Get Martin some snaps/experience so Kirksey can sit later.
Redmond had a play or two, as did Ramsey (and a penalty).
AR's jersey is clean again: 1 QB hit, no sacks.
I thought GB wore DET down and ran okay.
MVS has poor moments but this was a nice game until Lazard is all way back.
Tonyan and Lewis did their respective things.

I agree on King. Redmond is actually not a bad deep safety. Lowry ... his best game of the season: low bar but fair is fair. MVS’ touchdown was a hell of a hands catch. Martin needs more snaps as you say. Scott seemed to make some plays. I agree on Amos particularly.

Nothing can excuse ST’s showing yet again. Can’t have that, particularly with our D ( Scott actually had a good game and fortunately he wasn’t on the kickoff as he would have let the guy score). Our D cannot survive 7 point gifts to our opponents every week.

IIRC, it didn't land in the end zone. It wasn't downed by the coverage team, and it didn't bounce the right way. Still a 57 yarder with 37 net. The other punt was 44 yards with tremendous hang time, enough to force a fair catch at the Detroit 14.

Not a great game, but sounds like a pretty good one to me. I've been down on Scott lately, particularly his effort on tackles, so I don't think I am his apologist.

Agree on Redmond. He's an RFA ($3.2M tender).
Agree on Lowry; best might have been last week?
Scott and Amos brought the wood.
Amos has been doing that and limiting gains nicely.

With Jaire playing, teams will "pick" on King and Sullivan.
JK Scott likes domes.
Dome didn't hurt Crosby, but Kudos to him anyway. 58 is 58.
MVS looked like a #2 WR. Had the one oops play, but several nice intermediate catches and of course, the strong TD catch.
Bakh gave up a pressure or two.
Detroit got the ball out fast. OLBs beat the Detroit RT several times, but the ball was out so fast.

Since I forget, AR is ridiculously good.

Keke had good pressure and batted the ball down. I will present a McCarthyism, Obviously, Martin can move faster and his gap blitz just missed. Kirksey is a step slow and the only reason he is on the field is to cover his paycheck. If they want to succeed down the road get Barnes and Martin in the starting lineup. LaFleur seems to have at least banned the three man front for passing situations.

I rewatched the game and redmond early on made a mistake and followed the te who was double covered and his man the wr on a screen picked up a first on a long yac run. Later on they tried the same thing and redmond reacted and caused a minimal gain with the tackle. He also had a pass defensed in coverage. Its good to see him be at least competent. You should probably go back and find the posts that you apparently think I have written that stated that I thought Aaron Rodgers was definitively done.

You won't find them, because they don't exist.

What I have posted over the last 4-5 years are statements that Rodgers needed to get his fundamentals in order and start taking coaching or else he's doing more harm than good to the Packers. What I have said is he needs to stop throwing off his back foot, or willy-nilly side arming the ball for no good reason.

What I have stated in the past 4-5 years is that Rodgers needed to stop holding the ball looking for the deep shot and ignoring the underneath routes. What I have said is Rodgers needs to start taking what the defense gives him instead of throwing the ball away at record pace(s). What I have said is Rodgers needs to play within the system and get rid of the ball on time.

What I have said is that Rodgers developed a fear of the middle of the field that needs to be overcome.

All of that is what you'll find I've been harping about with Rodgers' game for the last 4-5 years. Shockingly, what you'll find people have been lauding Rodgers for this year in his resurgence? Almost all of those items have been addressed.

So, why don't you stop putting words in my mouth, and put your money where YOUR mouth is, and show me the posts where I've said "Rodgers is done". Go ahead. Find the posts. Show me.

I could only get snippets of the game on Red Zone. For the second week in a row, Martin puts good pressure on the QB and gets promptly pulled. I really don’t give a rat’s ass for Pettine and his “packages “.

Not sure. But all of the defense's stats (sacks, QB hits, TFL) came in the first half, and that's the half they gave up two very long drives in both plays and yards. Defensive stats were few and far between in the second half, but I thought there was still good pressure and the run defense was not an issue today at all, except on short yardage.

After all, GB gave up 14 in the first half and 10 in the second half, including 3 points mostly due to STs. For that matter, the 2nd half touchdown by Detroit was gifted to them by something like 5 defensive penalties on that drive. (GB got the benefit of multiple defensive penalties on one of their first half TD drives.)

Fine game plan by Detroit. Pettine adjusted by going to man for most of the second half, and having both CB on the move. Stafford was good tonight. Pettine at times went to zero coverage and played both SS in the box with third one high. The number of offensive holding none calls was surprising. The Packer pass rush was good and did contain Stafford for most of the game. This defense is completely different without Raven Greene. Detroit picked on the weak side for the 1st half till Pettine made his adjustments. Pretty much shut down the Lions in the second half.

Nice comment with more info than mine, and you more clearly expressed what I was trying to say. I was wondering about Savage, Amos and Redmond being on the field so much.

Lot of no calls on offensive holding. OLB (I believe it was Preston) was blatantly held on a goal line play that I think ended up in a Detroit TD. Saw a few that could have been called on GB but I don't remember any quite so blatant.

Thanks TGR. There were two no calls on Detroit in that play. The P Smith helmet grab and the Z Smith tackle letting Stafford get by him. Ironically there was a holding call against King or Sullivan that gave the 10 yards and a fresh set of downs. Packers usually get called for offensive holding because their hands are outside the shoulder pads. There a couple of those which happen when their opposite number gets a step. Best example of that is MVS. When he couldn't get aligned he grab both shoulder pads and physically lifted the DB whom he was blocking.

Travis Kelce may have the most yards. But our Tonyan has the most TDs for a TE. I'll take that any time.

Last year Packers were forcing Graham on the field, which limited Tonyan's chances. Not any more.

I guess since I have calmed down and took a shot of mellowness, a WIN is a W in that column and as I said after the Eagles game - this LIons game is the biggest one of the season for us and it was. We are in the dance - that is our number 1 objective.starting the year. There are just to many variables left to figure out now but not only are we in the playoffs we are tied for the number 1 seed. Now we don have to worry if we stink the place out over next 3 games - we dont have to worry about beating the Bears even though they played well today because the Bears still suck. Why because we are in the dance and the chips will fall where they may. Right now the Lions are out - the Bears and Vikings are currently out. Those are the things that matter - no matter how lousy the D played at times no matter how lousy our special teams coverage is ( and our kicking was bang on - both punts and kickoffs.) We still are in the dance - Yahoo!!!!!

Random Thoughts: Barnes and Martin are rookies in the NFL. Gap coverage, Gap coverage, Gap coverage... Strange game no calls by the on field officials on both sides of the line. Stranger calls on the Packers secondary, no one has called it that tight all season... Never forget. Division games where everybody knows all your weakness. Ford field, weird things happen at the place. Lions 1st half game plan was the best against this defense all year. That said this defense really misses Raven Greene.(Heal Faster) Mental mistakes by special teams almost let the Lions back in the fourth quarter. Ron Zook. Pictures. Just saying... Aaron Rodgers is a football God right now. Stafford was elite for most of the game. Rodgers played a full level above that today, amazing. This offense is clicking at all levels, both Adams and MVS (WHAT!) were drawing double coverage all game long. As close to a grind it out game as we will see in the 'new NFL'. Down goes the Saints, DOWN GOES THE SAINTS. YES!!!!! Packers are the number 1 seed (this week). I need a (root) beer...

Another batch of copy and paste Gut Reaction comments. Same thing week to week, all about the Defense and lately the Special Teams is getting near equal negativity. Wait, negativity? I thought that makes you not a fan. Wait, that lasts about 3-4 days and then all is great and awesome again.

This offense can score and so can the equal or better offenses against this defense and that is still the issue when playoffs begin. Whether as the one seed or two, the Defense and/or ST will be the liability in any loss that sends GB home in January. We knew it last year, we knew it at the start of this year, and we certainly know three quarters into this year. Why would we expect it to disappear at any point going forward. It's consistent lacking is as consistent as the offenses' success. With every win, we see why they will likely get booted.

I, at times, offer my sermon to fans here, but like many of the church going, the words fall from the minds and memory quickly after. If you attended a real church you would might actually encounter some good people. Instead, you cast your lot with some wacko, snake handling "congregation". A "congregation" where the people spend all of their time whining about how their perverted version of Christianity is persecuted instead of doing good works.

Try a traditional, mainstream church. There are plenty of Methodist, Presbyterian, Catholic, Baptist, etc. churches that would readily welcome you. You would be amazed at how much better you will feel about yourself by actually helping people in need, as opposed to pouring your effort and money into the hands of the charlatans.

I don't believe church is relegated to brick and mortar buildings, but believe that, if a God does exist, the whole world, every nook is a church. However, I really don't and surprised that you do, since you believe in science and science disputes the existence of a God. Hypocrite.

The Bible or any religious book are meant to create a guilty conscience and to be brainwashed into doing what you're told. They are no different from any cult or political belief, Socialism, Communism, Fascism, Muslim etc, etc. All desire to control your being and every aspect of your life.

Seriously, what would be the downside of lovingly setting Uncle Fester free now? Could our special teams get worse without his, erm, mentorship?

Amos had some really solid hits. And how about Mason from 58 yards!

Matt Stafford is one tough guy. Too bad he had to waste his talent in Dee-troit.

Both teams played pretty much true to form. MVS, Davante, and Tonyan were great. Would have liked to see a little more of Lazard, especially later in the second half; didn't like the choice of a long pass to Adams late in the fourth quarter--should have been more conservative and tried to chew more clock instead, but Crosby bailed us out with his leg (is that his career long?). A workmanlike effort from the RBs got the job done.

A solid step towards gaining the #1 seed; Saints have the Chiefs at home next.

Hearing a lot about Menenga. I’m not seeing how a coach’s strategy is the reason why ST sucks. At some point, all punts, kickoffs, FG’s consistently have the same goal. This team just lacks good players. You could have the best coach out there- he’s still gonna say “tackle the ball carrier”, or “hands team- head out and don’t touch it before it goes 10 yds.” They ain’t getting it done. It’s not gonna get better. At least Pettine has the excuse of down, distance, and situation.

Ha, yea, I guess that’s what I’m saying to some degree. ST requires execution more than strategy. I guess some planning does figure into some ST situations. Crosby and that damn drafted punter should BOTH kick it outta the end zone the rest of the year. I cringe when we kick or punt now, and can’t watch on side kicks- Hawks ruined those for me

Fair enough! And the truth is I don't know how much is coaching versus personnel. Teams have a zillion coaches but usually just one ST coordinator and one assistant, plus this year, Rayna Stewart, a quality control ST assistant. Stewart held the same position with Vanderbilt in 2018 when Menenga was ST coordinator there. Other than being a high school HC, Stewart has always been a quality control assistant (LBs and DL for the Titans in 2009 to 2011), whatever that is.

I could see an asst. coach for long-snapping, punting and kicking, and for coverage and return units. But it appears that teams go with just 2 to 3 ST coaches when all is said and done. And teams pay ST coaches less, as far as I can tell (the info on the salaries of coaches, particularly assistants, is hard to come by).

Dexter Lawrence, Dalvin Tomlinson and Leonard Williams are the front three. That has to factor into Martinez' play. He has a 77.6 PFF grade and had a 73.6 grade for GB in 2018 when Clark had an elite year and Lowry had not started his regression. Martinez is a nice player but he isn't playing that much better than he did in GB but he has a better supporting cast. Fackrell is okay with NYG but down a little bit.

There are times like today where the Offense is balanced and very dangerous. Gives me the feeling that we can win despite the defense and yes even despite the special teams.

At the same time it's still a crap shoot with the D in the playoffs, and as I said several times before, we're all going to be biting our nails anytime special teams is involved. Today was a perfect example of that for sure. On a positive note ,I know we lose this game with McCarthy and love that MLF put his foot on the gas to build a cushion.

No matter what this is going to be one exciting ride, just praying it doesn't end with a thud. Waiting for my #5 throwback in the mail and getting ready.

I posted a few days ago that i was undecided if Pettine should be retained. Ive now decided, Pettine has gotta go!

I still believe there is too much talent and resources poured into the D to be that bad. I dont give a fluffy rats ass what their rankings are, the D is soft, unorganized and at times lifeless.

Pettine and Menenga will be needing a ride out of town when the packers season ends. Hopefully the city of Green Bay has a rail with 2 seats on it.

Ya this one is a puzzler for me. Do we have talented d backs who are poorly coached or do we have a d coach that is trying his best to get these guys to play better.
Personally I see a lack of quickness and agility on our dbacks. They cant play man and I think Pettine is well aware of this so his scheme, which I hate tries to make up for all this.
The Vikes are playing three rookies who cover man to man, tackle well and are quick to the ball. Rookies who make our three year guys look lost. Go figure.

There's not much else to say then what's already been said. Special teams continues to be a weakness and nearly cost us the game. It could cost us the season when we get into the playoffs if Mennenga doesn't tighten it up - fast.

Grateful for:

They looked just like the falcons against the cowboys just watching til it went 10 yards. Problem was, lazard was being blocked out because it was a 2020 fuckin banana kick. Why werent they coached on what to do in this situation? That play and that hands team alone tells me that this dude menenga is not prepared. They just got lucky it went out.

This game was No Cakewalk. The Offense was the story. And had Stafford not sat in the last few minutes. Things would have looked different.

I don't know how much time is spent on special teams in practice but it needs to double the time they practice it and a big influx of starters onto it to strengthen their ability to make stops. I see a lot of guys on D and ST running stride for stride and not tackling early enough. MVS was locked in this game and as much as we all can be negative let's give him some love and hope we have turned a corner there. Gary is getting more playing time and is putting the pressure on. I liked a couple of the Blitzes by ILB and Savage....now do it a lot more often. OL did have quite a few offsides and "D" also. Winning the North is what matters. The #1 seed doesn't mean much for me. This team can come out flat at home/away and always after the bye or an extra weeks rest. All I want is for them to come out and act like they want it more than the other team and it starts with #12. If Rodgers really does want another ring he is going to have to push and pull this team there. I hope he does just that.

Can this d just close one out please? The middle of the defense was vulnerable before raven greene went out. Now? Shit. Kirksey is too damn slow. he was trying to cover backs and he just cant man. Amanendola blew by him. Alot of those plays over the middle might have been stopped had greene been in. At least some. The fake bubble screen that barnes bit on that went for 20 something, wouldve been greene. Kirksey wit the hold on the wheel route, couldve been greene. We held up better against the run, but they still got their 3rd n nines. So what does it matter?? Maybe vernon scott will play some safety with amos at the dime lb a little, but kirksey will continue to get exploited. Sullivan didnt play much better, if these guys wanna play man they better man up and do it. And where the fuck was rashan gary in the 2nd half???

MVS forgot how to drop catches!
Good thing Crosby and not Scott is our last line of defense on kickoffs!

Just an all around piss poor performance on d and we are talking a 5 win team we were playing. Stafford has not had a good year but you wouldn't know it today. I think the thing that fries a lot of us about the d is its the same scheme week in week out, There is no change.
I know I've heard Petunia bragging that if we have a good pass rush we dont need good pass defense, they wont be able to throw the ball. Ya maybe that would work if you have a steller pass defense but this team doesnt and we again gave up loooooooong drives and couldnt get off the field again. Same story as last year and the year before. The Pack are not a three and out defense.

NFL not for long Menningitus or whatever. The Pack has to be near or at the bottom on ST's.

A win is great, but Detroit is not a very good team and we let them hang around all day. The defense has moments of great play followed by moments of "get your head out of your a$$". Special Teams are terrible although I did like Austin back there on punts...he seems to still have a little pep in his step
