Gut Reactions: Undermaned Packers take apart Texans

Aaron's guyt reactions from the Packers win over the Texans.

  • Shout out to Briant Gutekunst. This team took apart the Texans with a ton of backups. That's a sign they have some damn good depth.
  • Great job sticking with the run early from LaFleur.
  • Loved the design on the Sterngerger TD. Also, hell of a grab by the young TE.
  • Billy Turner held up much better than I expected him to at left tackle.
  • Jamaal did a really nice job putting his foot in the ground and hitting some of those backside runs
  • Raven Greene had a hell of a game today.
  • Hated to see the pass rushers get banged up, but glad they were able to come back.
  • Corey made a great point on the watch party. Back in the day if it was 28-7 heading into the 4th quarter, you'd start drinking and have some fun. Now, with social media, we spend the final part of a blowout game nitpicking things.
  • Not that the Packers haven't made a habit of letting teams back in games...
  • Loved the hug Rodgers gave Malik Taylor. What a moment.
  • If the FOX broadcast hadn't highlighted JJ Watt every five seconds, I wouldn't even have known he played today. Incredible work by LaFluer and the offense to neutralize him with a patchwork o-line.
  • Speaking of the line, hell of a game from Rick Wagner.
  • Hated punting on 4th and 2 but the punt team had a fantastic operation on the punt to pin the Texans.
  • HELL of a play from Preston Smith on that 4th down. He also had a nice game overall.
  • Bad whiff on protection from Dexter Williams on the blocked punt.
  • Montravious Adams played some really important minutes after popping up on the injury report this week.
  • Onside kicks. Ugh.
  • HELL of a play by Henry Black.
  • Lots of folks will dismiss this win because of the Texans record. You can safely ignore those people.
  • Love this team.
  • Go Pack Go.

Raven greene was playing well. His injury hurt the d. Oren burks replaced him for one series and got swalllowed up on that long run by d johnson. But yeah. Itd be nice to just shut teams down.

Especially after watching the bucs Lbs last week. At the end of the day, this defense does have talent. But they also have holes. Z n p smith have to get pressure and sacks for them to succeed. At least they held em to fgs when it mattered.

Great bounceback win after an ugly loss. That is a bad Texans team but they won a playoff game last year. And the Packers are missing a whole bunch of key players.

Particular shoutout to Bobby Turner at LT. I didn't even know he was on the team. But he did a good job replacing Bakh.

Is there something in the new Packer DNA that has to let a team get back to within 2 scores?

Why weren't the Packers able to get more yds on the run today?

New? Backer blowouts are usually the ones past week, we get blown out? It takes teams a while to get, gang rush Rodgers, pass early and often and the pack looks like a so so team. They just wait to long to figure this out.

Turner and Wagner played solid games at their tackle spots, both in pass pro and in run blocking (minus the one whiff by Wagner on Watt). Defense also played well only giving up 20 points. I hope Barnes is not badly hurt, but it was also good to see K. Martin on the field. The Packers may actually be developing some young ILBs. On to the Vikings!

Good solid rebound effort by the Packers today. Rodgers to Adams was just there all day. Good work from the OL. Dillon not very impressive.

Defense played well but still had their C’mon man moments in the second half. I thought K.Martin had a nice NFL debut. Scott had a great day punting.

Good win but can’t wait to get Jones and Lazard back on offense. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since ‘61

Turner: left tackle right tackle I guess the only mistake was lining him up at guard.

Davante Adams moves inside to the slot on a play, a safety walks over in coverage...I smile. 45 yard touchdown on the way.

Jamaal WIlliams isn't going to burst one for 80 but what a luxury to have him as the stand in.

Maybe we were seeing a P Smith that wasn't sustainable last season. Maybe this is what he is, solid and there to stuff a 4th down play.

Fantasy football reaction: Come on AR! Tonyan (rhymes with Funyun) had a TD there if you threw it better.

Yes indeed. Texans were not well coached today. I think coaches quit after OT loss to TEN last week.

I don't think any QB can become complacent about stuff like that without it affecting their play.

Rodgers in 2018 and even some of 2019 is case in point. There were a lot of ugly throws due to sloppy mechanics.

Coming into 2020 Rodgers has clearly put an increased focus on his mechanics, for the first time in years, and it shows. Today he was perhaps a bit sloppier than he has been all year, but still much better form than the previous few years.

At one point, the TV graphic had him at 22 for 30....8 incompletions. Of those, I know that at least 3 were throwaways, one was a clear drop, and one was a little behind Adams

I don’t recall Rodgers taking any hard hits.

If we can protect him, this offense is good enough to reach the Super Bowl.

"Lots of folks will dismiss this win because of the Texans record. You can safely ignore those people. "

I guess people can ignore whoever they want to ignore. But if the question is "how good are the Packers," I definitely do not think anyone should ignore the reality that 3 of the Packers' 5 victories have come over 1-win teams, and that the record of their past opponents currently stands at an abysmal 14-24. They have only played 2 teams with winning records. They beat one by a touchdown and got obliterated by the other one.

Great and inspired bounce back performance.

Great balance on offense though a little #17 reliant.

Awesome red zone play (creative play calling).

The middle of the defense was a welcome surprise.

The lack of Dillion use still bewildering for a 2 pick.

So much for "Is the Lafleur/Rodgers offense better off without Davante?" and "What To Do at LT if Bakh Can't Go."

A couple of real fine plays by Preston Smith and Vernon Scott in the latter part of the game.

Solid game from Jamaal. Surprised to see that Dillon didn't get more carries, but I guess MLF just likes to go with what works.

Nice to see Taylor get his first TD.

It's only a win vs. Houston, but hey, they're on the schedule, and the Packers dispatched of them without much drama.

The offense looks better when we protect our QB. Turner was a guy some people wanted to cut so we’d have money to sign another runsfastjumpshighguy. I’m glad our GM isn’t that stupid.

The offense did well without Bakhtiari or Jones. I doubt that we NEED to resign either.

In all 5 wins, our opponent has not snapped the ball once in the second half with a chance to tie or take the lead.

I’ve never seen so many people get their panties in a wad over garbage time points.

We are nota better team without Adams. Rodgers-to Adams has to be stopped, and if it’s not, you aren’t going to stop this offense and you aren’t going to win.

MSV...I’ve been about as patient and understanding as I can be, but he just keeps disappointing me. Taylor appears to be ascending in the eyes of the coaches and QB.

I am unable to understand why we cannot prevent successful onside kicks when we know they are coming.

Good win. 5-1 is a good place to be.

I’ve had it with our Notre Dame contingent. Dexter Williams is responsible for that blocked punt. And yet again ESB is on the field and does nothing. Enough talk about potential; we need production!

And MVS is really underperforming. Glad to see Malik Taylor get a TD, and nice to see Rodgers share in his excitement. This team has a spark. Let’s go home and clobber the Vikings. And hopefully more of the injured players can return to the field. GO Pack, GO!

No playmakers on d.
Rodgers to Adams is great until Adams gets doubled, then Rodgers goes into shell.

The team responded very well after getting pounded last week. Today was a good result for us, considering we had some key players out.

What disappointed me was Dexter Williams on the blocked punt (he didn't even try!) and then MVS. MVS is blowing the opportunity of a lifetime while Lazard is out. He will look back on these days and it will haunt him.

Similar to 2006 when the Packers took Greg Jennings, I REALLY REALLY hope Gutekunst is smart enough to spend a 1st or 2nd rounder on a WR. He can't keep depriving Rodgers of weapons. MVS, ESB, et. are not the answer.

There is something going on with Rodgers and MVS. Friend who is front office guy for AFC team pointed out how many times MVS was open on his routes, and that Rodgers flat out refused to throw to him. In all other aspects the Packers want in their system, MVS is fine. He guesses that MVS may be too quick for Rodgers in the route tree. Both may need time separate from normal practice to sync up. Right now Rodgers seems only to trust MVS on fly or skinny post routes. It is an issue that MLF will have to deal with. (I was at game today with AFC guy. He's an old friend... :-)

When the Packers were on the clock in rd 1, there were nothing but rd 2 WR left. When they were on the clock in rd 2, there were only rd 3 WR left.If you have a great QB you don't waste 1st rd picks on WR. The Packers have proven that ovet the years.

Rodgers has had a plethora of weapons most of his career. At the moment not so much. I'm glad ghey didn't reach for one this year.

Next years draft should be OT, DL and WR depending how the board falls.

BS. Thompson had retired already. Gute was the GM and had to clean up Murphy's mess. Oh, and McCarthy was in the last year of his contract when he was fired in the middle of the night. PS. Nick Perry played out his contract, and is out of the league. The NFL is a brutal business...

Radom thoughts: Agree with Nagler. (Second week in a row. UGH!! ) Brian Gutekunst is one of real good GMs in the league. Bob Harlan saves the Packers. Again. MLF is growing as a HC. Knowing he screwed up last week he went back to basics. Run the ball. Run to daylight. Run to victory. Play action works when the front seven has to play gap protection. JJ Watt. Who? Second week in a row Pettine has played his base 3-5. Second week in a row the Packers have shut down a run game. Raven Greene the one player who makes this defense work? Average Rodgers is still a top ten QB is this league. Notice Rodgers threw off his back foot only a couple of times. Man must have been working his video hard last week. Was at the game in Huston. Packers were much quicker off the ball in all phases. Uncovered onside kicks, a tradition that continues. GPG. I need a (root) beer.... :-)
