Gut Reactions: Rodgers comes apart against the Bucs

Aaron Rodgers and the offense crash back down to Earth

  • When you're going to go 15-1, you gotta lose a game.
  • Aaron Rodgers is mortal. Who knew.
  • The repeated desire to run wide toss plays on this defense was mystifying
  • It's 31-10 and it's 4th down near midfleld. Why are you punting?
  • This team can't cover a 100 year old tight end.
  • Just tell me Bakhtiari is ok.
  • Tough return for Equanimeous Tristan Imhotep J. St. Brown
  • Happy to get the brain fart of a game in Tampa out of the way now instead of during the Super Bowl.
  • Look for future opponents to copy some of the blitz conscpets the Bucs used today.
  • Really liked the idea behind Aaron Jones taking Tyler Ervin's plants
  • Ndamukong Suh remains trash.
  • Brady clearly played a better game. That said, he got more support from his defense.
  • Burn the tape.
  • Get ready for next week.
  • Still love this team.
  • Go Pack Go.

Onto next week. Hope Bakh is ok and that this serves as a wake the eff up call to the OL. And where is that pass rush we paid so much for?

Burn the tape, indeed.

Sounds like Bak has a pectoral issue. Hope it's not torn. I guess we have the same team as last year if Rodgers doesn't play lights out? We didn't hold up to a good team. We are not ready for big boy football, just like last year against the Niners

O line was terrible. But 14 free points allowed them to go all out for Rodgers. LaFleur had no answer. But games go down the tubes with momentum and this seemed to.

Should serve as wake up to fans: piss poor tackling skills, zero interceptions, no run or pass blocking and the receivers look confused?
This is not a playoff team.

Interesting that you put the focus on the Oline because that’s how I saw it too. We did not protect our QB and we did not open holes in the run game.

When you’re getting beat on the line, it’s tough to score points, and IMO that’s what happened here.

I certainly won't absolve the O-line - not in the least - as they did play like crap, but it does seem odd to me to single them out above other units. Pretty much every position group played like crap. But there was no pressure at all on ARod's pick six, and the second interception clanged directly off of Davante's hands. Neither of those were the fault of the O-line. Those were the plays that made the wheels fall off, and everything went to shit from there.

On the other side of the ball, Brady was pressured on only FOUR of TWENTY-SEVEN drop backs (15%). Maybe our pass rushers deserve a bit of the blame...

Will the Packers ever have a REAL defense? I thought they should have gotten rid of Pettine after his first year.

Just awful Defense.

Yes, the Pick 6 turned the game around.

Also, how did you like the 3 man rush at the goal line when it was 3rd down and goal? Nice job PETTINE.

They have to keep them out of the endzone after the second pick/PI to Adams. You cannot play with a three man rush on 3rd and goal and let Brady survey the Picket Line until he sees Gronk on Jackson and starts laughing. That was the turning point. They were well rested and just looked like frauds trying to defend their goal.

Devin Bush was already picked by Steelers in a first round swap with Denver. That said, Bucs ILBs are great: Devin White and Lavonte David. Active, fast sure tackling ILBs are key to stopping the run and covering the middle passing game. GB management just doesn't get it. Ray Nitschke is looking down on this team with a tear in his eye. This defense is soft.

Rodgers started getting hit and then reverted to forcing the ball on the boundaries.

We got to see what a defense with good ILBs looks like and the impact they make.

Mike Evans and Devin White are the only stars that were top 10 picks. Brady, Gronkowski, Suh, Shaquille Barrett, JPP, Leshawn McCoy, Leonard Fornette were all free agents, and Jones, Chris Goodwin, Winfield, Carlton David, Jamel Dean were all 2nd round or later picks. That's why it helps to have a GM who can draft past round 2 and a GM willing to make roster moves to fill holes. They worked a trade for a DT while dismantling GB. You think Gute was working the phones as well?

Could’ve, should’ve seen this coming. Bucs after the sloppiest game against Chi, were playing pissed off. Whatever hangover they had was gone in the 2nd quarter. Erwin was sorely missed, LOS battles were lost, usually the determining factor if you win or lose. I hadn’t realized AR historically does not fare well in TB, might have something to do with their D. What I wouldn’t give to have Bowles as DC.

Josh Jackson got the start in place of King and showed he is still a work in progress. I thought Jackson's run support was good, but he still struggles in coverage. Not sure the coverage part is ever going to get better.

The O-line mailed this one in. Rodgers was harassed all game long and they never figured out a blocking scheme that worked. Add in Bahk's injury and this was an ugly performance by a group that had been lauded in the prior four games.

I think Jackson is worse than a work in progress. He is guaranteed to get a couple penalties per game because he grabs every play. I am not sure its fixable because it appears to be how he played in college as well.

Both lines were quite bad today. Our O line was brutalized and the D line that was supposed to feast didn't even get a crumb. It's a week to week league but they were not ready for this one.

P. Smith was in coverage, along with M. Adams. They had two lightening LB's all over the field, we had two stiff 280 lb. linemen standing like barber poles in the middle of the field. And that 3 man rush was a thing of beauty, wasn't it? Brady could still be looking for a receiver if he hadn't already found Gronk.

The Packers were a complete mess in this game. They returned from their bye week and fell flat on their face.
The OL was manhandled even before Bak was hurt. The defense not only did nothing to pick up the offense after the 2 picks. They just gave up another 24 points.

The pick 6 was on Rodgers. The second pick was off Adams hands and should have been a completion for a first down. The team, especially the offense was off. The defense was ineffective after the 1st quarter.

Tampa kicked our butts after the first quarter. No excuses. Just got beat bad. Get prepared for next week and hope that Bak is not seriously hurt. Thanks, Since ‘61

Agreed. When Adams returned from his turf toe injury last year, Rodgers was looking for him much too often. He did the same today and the TB defense was waiting for it. It's a historical Rodgers tendency which he, along with LaFluer MUST break.

Agreed. They need a second target that needs to be accounted for, and EQ, who coming back from another injury looked lost, and Scantling who drops way too many balls and isnt the best route runner. There are quality wide receivers out there that will be leaving their respective teams, including one that just so happens to be on the texans. A Packers win and bringing Kenny Stills into the fold would be nice.....

Rodgers didn’t play well but the OL executed poorly and the defense allowed 31 points. That makes it very difficult to win in the NFL.
It would be nice to see the Packers defense pick up the offense for once the way Tampa’s defense picked up their offense today after a terrible start.
Just because our QB throws a pick or the offense is having a bad game doesn’t mean that the defense should collapse as well. Make a stop. Get a turnover. Help the offense get back in the game.
To blame Rodgers or any single player for the loss is to say that you don’t know what you are watching. Thanks, Since ‘61

True, it's only one game, but when adversity struck, the Packers just....ceased. Very embarrassing.

Dillon should have been in the game much earlier, like maybe when we were only down by four points. MLF should have known that AR was flustered after the two INTS and tried to calm the offense down with more running plays; no need to panic!

What was the rush to bring ESB back?

If the Packers don't resign King, they're going to need to add two quality CBs somehow, because Jackson isn't the answer, for sure. If he had just turned around on that long pass, it might have been an interception instead of a killer penalty.

This game underscores the value of having a well-coached defense; if ours had played half as well as the Bucs did, we still might have had an outside chance of winning this game. Where was the pass rush? Brady did make a couple of really, really nice throws, but he operated with minimal interference behind the LOS. Our defense may need a talent upgrade in a couple of areas, but Pettine's days may be numbered if we see any more of this kind of effort.

If you can get to stiff Brady like Chicago did last week they're very beatable. If Z isn't getting in, the Pack struggle mightily. GB barely laid a glove on him.

The Packers waved the white flag when they decided to punt on 4th and about 8 from somewhere near midfield late in the 3rd. Rodgers played 2 more series, including another punt that was definitely something other than "all gas, no brake". Bakh was already side-lined. Just another example of ML not having his head in the game any more than the players on the field did.

Just a complete stinker all the way around. And just because ML didn't miss any open receivers, drop any passes, blow any blocks, blow any coverage or miss any tackles does not mean he didn't stink, too.

Today the bubble burst in Tampa Bay, and the MLF/Rodgers led Packers took a giant face plant into a big pile of reality. The Packers are who most analysts thought they were going into the season - a solid 9-7 or possibly a 10-6 team with Rodgers healthy. A wild card contender (Chicago looks like they’ll take the division with Foles at QB and an increasingly dominant defense), but nothing more. One thing that Rodgers demonstrated today was his toughness and, at age 37, he can still run (for his life).

They were and I have said before are soft, defense under Pettine has been below average for his 3 year stint. Amos takes the worst angles you can see why Chicago let him go. I liked that Tonyan responded to Winfield hit in end zone on AR but after that they were cupcakes the rest of day. No adjustments were made once Bucs belted them in the mouth. SF did it twice last year, very similar to what Rams faced in SB vs Pats, no response after getting physically handled. You can see it in their short yardage offense 4th and 1 they lose every time. Would hate to think Tampa has their number like SF did but looks the same. Sorry

I am sure its just my perspective, But it seemed like Tampa was blitzing most of the second half, whether it was run blitz or pass. I know the times I tried to count, it looked like 5-8 players rushing the QB. I felt like they were not worried about a chance of getting beat on a deep ball. Just force Rodgers to throw the ball before he had a chance to see the field. He was hit on nearly every play. Sure the O-line had a less than stellar game, but it appeared there just more rushers than could be picked up.

On the flip side, Pettine played soft and cautious. I only remember seeing 1 blitz all game. Seems like they had the better defensive plan along with better players.

My concern, the Vikes looked like didly buuuuuut, they were in it and scored points, never gave up and their d backs, mostly young rookies showed they could cover man to man and they all could tackle. Ya it wasn't pretty but they never gave up and didn't get run over like a freight train.
Miss tackle is the 12th person on the pack. The bucks exposed the real Packers team.
Rodgers once he tossed two picks got myopic.
Rolls out looking for one guy, Tongan who tripped so he tosses ball away. He stopped looking the field for open man and made his throwing decision pre snap. Rookies and QBs without confidence do this.

Important hot take here, I think. Indeed, the 1-4 Vikings were in it against the 0-4 Falcons before losing to drop to 1-5. This should totally shape the rest of the season for the Packers.

I fear the Vikings are only a franchise quarterback and 15 draft picks away from a Super Bowl.

Packers under the new coaching regime are continuing the seeming trend of laying an egg after a bye week. Hopefully the rest has long term benefits in terms of nicked up guys getting healthy and the return to routine helps sort out some of today’s problems.

Problem started when Rodgers stated "Arrogantly" my down year is better than most NFL QB's best year. Humble yourself Rodgers and thank your Creator for gifting you to be a top level QB. Rodgers was off all game. Overthrows Big Dog wide open down the middle, Under throws MVS, late on throw to Jones allowing DB flying into him and ball movement being tackled falling out of bounds. Spotting Bucs 2 scores and a third should have been. Defense allowed 24 while our Offense did nothing after 10 pts. Our D should have had a couple picks also. Just a great 1st quarter and the wheels came off. Barnes hammered a few Bucs pretty hard. My only bright spot.

Don’t worry Nostradamus we are going to focus on the run, adjust our pad level, watch the tape and clean it up for the next game. Thanks, Since ‘61

Kenny Clark is not back to 100% Kenny Clark by any stretch of the imagination. I watched him get rolled back 7 yards on a play, then on the goal line he was literally flipped straight down to the ground. He's going to need time to fully recover game strength it looks like.

I've been personally pulling for Josh Jackson to develop some confidence and work his way into the lineup, but he had a horrible outing today when you look at the entire body of work. Feel horrible for him. He's just not anywhere ready for NFL level play in anything more than a supporting role at this point.

Speaking of guys having a poor outing, ESB, a player I still whole-heartedly believe has more upside than any other WR on the roster not named Adams, completely squandered his opportunity to earn more snaps with a poor route and a horrible drop, both on short outs.

Rodgers does this thing where when HE makes mistakes, he lets it get into his head. Then he starts to press, and attempts to show the world he's the best, and starts taking tunnel vision deep shots to prove he can make up for the mistake he made. It gets into his head. You can see it on his face. We've seen this here and there throughout his career. It feels like the implosion is most likely to happen in the "first interception of the year" games. I think it's because Rodgers wants so badly to chalk up the NFL's first ever perfect, no INT season for a 16 game starting QB. Just a hunch.

Was there anything that went right outside of the first quarter? Krys Barnes continuing to flash, I guess?

A team that looked unstoppable on offense for a month just got stomped. Rodgers looked terrible all game - even in the first quarter when the offense was moving efficiently, the balls weren't as on target as they have been all season, and that inaccuracy only got worse as the game went on. The total surrender after the interceptions was infuriating - you could feel the whole team playing without any energy or cohesion. As bad as Rodgers was - and he was most definitely bad - our vaunted offensive line was dominated at the LOS. On the other side of the ball, Brady looked cool as a cucumber hitting his ancient TE with very little pressure all day. We should not be this bad.

This game gave me some pretty intense deja vu back to 2019. I was hoping that we had left that team in California, but it seems it was just lurking in wait. Maybe I'm reading too much into a bad loss. That the Packers are still capable of being beaten THIS badly, though, without mustering any sort of competitiveness after one costly mistake threw off the momentum is making me think that this team just isn't ready yet. Hopefully I'm proven wrong!

It always cracks me up how quickly the mood changes. Four and Oh coming off a bye and the Packers are locks for the Superbowl. Lose one game and it's time to blow everything up. LOL.

Do you notice that all passing TD came over Jackson! I believe you should respect Kevin King more, and what he is doing in Packers D.

All of the problems with pass rush came from bad play in secondary, especially from Jackson. 2 DPI was on him, both on deep balls. Both resulted in TDs. I say bench him and release him or trade him for 5th or 6th round pick.

Also, I did not understood decision to put Wagner for injured Bakh. I believe better solution was to put Wagner at RT, than move Turner to RG, Lucas to LG and Jenkins to LT. Looks with more sense to me.

ESQ needs some time. That was not the game Packers should go with him. Too good D they were going in.

Monty Adams played well, he was very often in the Bucs backfield, had one or 2 TFL. Packers run D was OK till the game was done. Sometime at the beginning of the 4th Q.

Also, I believe Aaron was not recovered from the 2 INT in the row and played very poor game, somewhat due to the O-line, somewhat due directly to him.

I'm very disappointed, but that is just one game, against very good D. Now, we can talk about reasons for Packers poor performance, but I believe that everybody have from time to time bad day. Problem is when your main leader has it (Aaron).
The complete team eventually fall under that influence and you got what you got.

I agree with Aaron - I love this team!

Combine poor pass blocking on offense with non-existent pass rush on defense, and this is what you get.

This team still goes as Aaron Rodgers goes and when he sucks the whole team collapses. You could clearly see defeat on his face yesterday and the team followed right along. Terrible

Petine needs to go! His defensive schemes suck! He is a McCarthy hangover! Gary is not a first round pick! Smith brothers are getting man handled! Jackson waste of another 2nd rd pick! Man both sides of the ball got nut punched yesterday! Lets see what their made of next week!

It's just one game, and it was only the 5th game. I never expected the Pack to go undefeated. It was a very, very tough one to watch, though. Had to have a few extra beers, honestly.
