PFT: Seahawks, Okung "Not Even Close"
By admin
Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports the Seattle Seahawks and Peter Schaffer, the agent for first-round offensive tackle Russell Okung, are "not even close" on a deal.
Okung, the sixth overall pick, is surrounded by signed draft choices:
4. Washington Redskins - Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma - Signed (6-years, $60M max; $36.75M guaranteed)
5. Kansas City Chiefs - Eric Berry, S, Tennessee - Signed (6-years, $60M; $34M guaranteed)
6. Seattle Seahawks - Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State
7. Cleveland Browns - Joe Haden, CB, Florida - Signed (5-years, $50M max; $26M guaranteed)
8. Oakland Raiders - Rolando McClain, LB, Alabama - Signed (5-years, $30M/$40M max; $23M guaranteed)
Based on the deals signed by Berry and Haden, Okung is looking at $27-33 million in guarantees, depending on contract length. The Seahawks are counting on Okung to start immediately at left tackle, and have not been shy about spending money on draft picks, so it's difficult to envision these talks dragging on for too long.
Today is the Seahawks' second day of training camp, so there's not much cause for alarm at this point. If Okung still isn't in camp by Tuesday or Wednesday, then it will be time to push the panic button.
