Bears Will Not Renew Director of College Scouting's Contract

Chicago Bears director of college scouting Greg Gabriel's contract will not be renewed, reports Neil Hayes of the Chicago Sun-Times.

UPDATE: Earlier report indicated Gabriel had been fired. That is not correct. His contract expires next month, and the team will not renew.

Sean Jensen of the Sun-Times finds it "odd" since Gabriel was presented to the media following the draft.

In February, the Bears fired director of pro personnel Bobby DePaul, and WSCR in Chicago reported that Gabriel was likely to join DePaul. The departures of both executives now opens the door for the Bears to hire former Seattle Seahawks general manager Tim Ruskell, who is close friends with Bears general manager Jerry Angelo.

In fact, Angelo was the Director of Player Personnel for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1987-2000 before becoming the Bears' general manager in 2001. Ruskell also joined the Buccaneers' personnel department in 1987, and replaced Angelo as the Buccaneers' Director of Player Personnel before following Rick McKay to the Atlanta Falcons in 2004.
