Final 53-Man Roster Prediction

The Packers must be down to 53 players by 5 p.m. Central time on Saturday. Brian Carriveau predicts the 2011 Packers roster.

All NFL teams need to be down to 53 players by 5 p.m. Central time on Saturday. Here's the way I see the Packers' roster shaking out...

Quarterbacks (3): Aaron Rodgers, Matt Flynn, Graham Harrell

Running backs (4): Ryan Grant, James Starks, John Kuhn, Alex Green

Wide receivers (6): Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Randall Cobb, Chastin West

Tight ends (5): Jermichael Finley, Andrew Quarless, Tom Crabtree, D.J. Williams, Ryan Taylor

Offensive line (8): Chad Clifton, T.J. Lang, Scott Wells, Josh Sitton, Bryan Bulaga, Derek Sherrod, Marshall Newhouse, Evan Dietrich-Smith

Defensive line (6): B.J. Raji, Ryan Pickett, Mike Neal, C.J. Wilson, Jarius Wynn, Howard Green

Outside linebackers (5): Clay Matthews, Erik Walden, Frank Zombo, Vic So'oto, Brad Jones

Inside linebackers (4): A.J. Hawk, Desmond Bishop, D.J. Smith, Robert Francois

Cornerbacks (5): Charles Woodson, Tramon Williams, Sam Shields, Pat Lee, Davon House

Safeties (4): Nick Collins, Morgan Burnett, Charlie Peprah, Jarrett Bush

Specialists (3): Mason Crosby, Tim Masthay, Brett Goode

Practice squad (8): Lawrence Guy, Caleb Schlauderaff, Nick McDonald, Tori Gurley, Jamari Lattimore, Josh Gordy, Anthony Levine, Ray Dominguez

Last four in: Brad Jones, Pat Lee, Chastin West, Evan Dietrich-Smith

Last four out: Nick McDonald, Brandon Underwood, Josh Gordy, Tori Gurley

Commentary:

  • If there's a position where the Packers put in a waiver claim, it could be on the defensive line where they seemingly have the least depth. In such a case, they'd have to cut one more player.
  • Seeing as Ted Thompson has a penchant for keeping his draft choices, it was also difficult to predict him cutting Caleb Schlauderaff, Ricky Elmore and Lawrence Guy.
  • Injuries to Lawrence Guy, Davon House and Anthony Levine made them difficult to evaluate. They could be candidates for injured reserve depending upon the severity of their injuries.
  • There's no guarantee all eight practice squad players will be from the Packers' training camp roster. The eight I predicted are the ones I think have the best chance of sticking around if they're not claimed by someone else.
  • Keeping only eight offensive lineman was a difficult decision and leaves the Packers with little depth at the position.
  • After last night, I don't see how the Packers can keep Nick McDonald ahead of Evan Dietrich-Smith. McDonald still has practice squad eligibility, at least under the rules of the old CBA.
  • The 53rd player on the roster might be Brad Jones. If the Packers have to make a cut for a waiver claim, he may be the player. Robert Francois can play outside linebacker in a pinch, at least until Frank Zombo is healthy.
  • I think Pat Lee secured a roster spot with his play last night. It's worth noting he'll be a free agent after this season, and he could net the Packers a compensatory draft choice if he leaves in free agency next year. And Josh Gordy still has practice squad eligibility.
  • Going with only three true safeties is a tough choice, but Charlie Peprah is the unquestioned number three guy, making the need for a fourth safety much less. They'll probably keep one on the practice squad, just in case.
  • Four running backs is also risky, but they can probably always pick up a guy like Dimitri Nance, Brandon Saine or Quinn Johnson as street free agent if there's an injury.
  • The best trade candidates, if there are any, would seem to be Chastin West, Tori Gurley and Ricky Elmore (to a 4-3 team).

What about James Jones as trade bait?

There weren't any teams, aside from the Vikings, that showed any interest in him in free agency. I don't know why they'd change their mind now.

I'm surprised you put West ahead of Gurley. Thoughts there?

BTW, I think whichever of those two is cut will get picked up elsewhere.

The thinking with West is that he can be a return specialist and a gunner on special teams.

The punt blocking aspect Gurley provides is nice, but way overrated. If he does make the team, it's unlikely he'll be active on game days anyhow, at least right away.

I agree in that I think they'll get picked up somewhere else.

Wilde said there were something like 2400 punts last year and 14 were blocked... just not a play you can hang your hat on. I agree with you 6 WR's and 9 DB's, but I had Lee gone and Underwood staying. Pretty much only because I'm a little more over Lee than Underwood at this point... personally.

West has apparently been cut. I also preferred that, of the two, they keep Gurley, although it remains to be seen if he'll be kept anyway.

Setting aside the fumble recoveries, how did you feel about Lee's coverage last night? It looked shaky to me. I just don't think anyone else on the roster looked any better.

I thought it was pretty good actually. I think you have to consider that the Chiefs attempted 47 passes, and Lee played extra after the injury to House. No cornerback is going to be perfect. He gave up a few receptions, but nothing too big.

Did he figure out how to turn his head around last night? If not, I don't feel being on the receiving end of a fumble should give him a roster spot. Coverage is far more important that being lucky.

Lee needs to go. Period. But will Ted swallow his pride and cut ties with another 2nd round pick? Tough to say. I hear Brohm signed with a UFL team... so that's good.

I'm thinking House to IR. He has missed so much time and with the ankle injury less than 48 hours before cuts I could see GB making that move. Zombo to IR IMO less likely: My W.A.G.

Offense - 26
QB - Rodgers, Flynn*, Harrell
RB - Grant*, Starks, Green
FB - Kuhn, Johnson
WR - Jennings, Driver, Jones, Nelson*, Cobb
TE - Finley*, Quarless, DJ Williams, Taylor
OL - Clifton, Lang, Wells*, Sitton*, Bulaga, Newhouse, Sherrod, McDonald, Evan Dietrich Smith

Defense - 24
DL - Raji, Pickett, Neal, Wilson, H Green*, Wynn
ILB - Hawk, Bishop, DJ Smith, Francois
OLB - Matthews, Walden*, Zombo, So'oto, B Jones
CB - Woodson, T Williams, Shields, Lee*, Bush*
S - Collins, Burnett, Peprah, Underwood

Specialists - 3
Crosby, Masthay, Goode

IR - House

Practice squad - 8
Levine, Gordy, Lattimore, Guy, Schlauderhaff, Saine, Gurley, Dominguez

What am I missing with J. Bush??? His zone is OK (SB pick), but he is a complete liability in man coverage (40yr old H. Ward had 5yds separation on SB TD). Nice that he can sort of play CB and S and that he gets down the field on ST, but has about as much success locating the ball there as he does in man and he doesn't tackle well on D or ST. Not worth the roster spot. Would like to see Levine or Gordy get a shot at S or Dime. Thoughts?

I'm thinking they keep Gurley over West based on potential upside. Maybe they see a Randy Moss type; tall and lanky. If neither one makes it it is because I believe all 5 TE's make the roster. With Finley, Quarless and Williams you have three good receiver types and the Pack could get by with 5 WR's.

Why does everyone think Pat Lee played well last night? I didn't see it. The fumble recovery was a gift and he was continuously two steps behind the KC receivers. Gordy was worse.

Anyone here if JJones is alright?. Is his injury worse than they let on?

I like TedtheSledge's idea IRing House. You keep control of a minimum wage player who probably will not play a lot this year. Is there a way to convince Chastin West to injury himself so we can IR him too?

What are the rules for practice squad eligibility? If I recall correctly, it has something to do with how many games the player was active on game day.

Used to be nine games under old CBA. I doubt it's changed. I believe they can be on a practice squad for their first three years only.

This lloks just like Nagler's prediction, only with better explanations. Again FIVE TE's and only 8 OLinemen and 4 RB's.

And, sorry but Pat Lee has not outplayed Josh Gordy. Trade Lee for a 7th rounder and be done w/it.

Don't think Stonehands is getting traded, but it would allow West or Gurley to make the roster.
