Family Night In Pictures (And Some Words, Too)
It may have been another rain-soaked Family night, but for thousands of Packer families, the thrill of tailgating and sitting in the Lambeau stadium benches together couldn't be drowned out.

Here's a little video I strung together of some pictures from the August 6, 2011 Family Night Event...which was once again, shortened by rain. While we ended up spending a good hour or so in the concourse, the spirits were high, the concessions were open, and I was less frustrated having gone through it in 2009. Actually, in 2009, we were crowded out of the roofed area of the upper concourse, so we ended up getting rained on for the 2+ hours we waited. This was much better.
I tried to capture the spirit of bringing your little kids to tailgate and enjoy the atmosphere, a privilege often denied to most families because of the cost and availability of tickets. For many families, this is their only opportunity to spend time inside Lambeau Field together as a family (and for many, their only opportunity to get inside Lambeau Field at all). It's no wonder Packer fans are so patient during these rainouts...it's as much coming to Lambeau together as it is watching the scrimmage.
One of the very family friendly offerings was a food booth just outside the Fan Zone. They offered brats, chunks of watermelon, or corn on the cob for $2, and water/pop/ice cream for $1. For a family of five, it was nice to sit and get a filling snacky meal for $19, especially when we went inside and wifey got just a beer, a soda, and a water for the same amount.
The lineup waiting for Packers to roll in was pretty typical. In the video, a picture of a blue-shirted Aaron Rodgers entering the stadium can be seen. The admission to the stadium was held up for quite a while. I was under the impression admission would start earlier than 5:30, but in the end, we didn't get in until after 6:00 because of a reported issue with the ticket scanning devices. We still got to our seats in plenty of time and got to sit and watch the warmups.
Crosby didn't do too much kicking, as his foot was injured, but Masthay was booming them and putting them in the corner quite nicely. Kept a close eye on Randall Cobb on returns, and he was sure handed throughout the warmups and seemed to switch into a high gear effortlessly. Nick Collins was out with the special teams and I noticed how massive he looks in comparison to the wide receivers.
The 90-jersey giveaway was kind of a long process, especially given that we knew a storm was coming. However, seeing all of the Packers turn around and shake hands with a bunch of kids was pretty priceless. The flyover was majestic following the National Anthem.
On the initial offensive series, Rodgers was picked off by Ross, who jumped the route in front of Jones. The crowd reaction, amusingly enough, was one of disbelief and you almost heard a smattering of stiffled boos. Naturally, Rodgers was the show for most in attendance and the concept of cheering for a young defensive back making his mark was lost a bit.
One of the most notable issues I saw with the #1 offense was that Rodgers did very well picking the defense apart in the middle or on crossing patterns. However, he took several shots down the sideline, and in each case the receiver had zero separation from the defensive back. The one deep pass to Cobb was actually well-covered by Ross, but the pass was short and Cobb came back to it.
Was very impressed with the long run by James Starks. You could see the strength in his running and his burst. I really think he will end up being the starter by mid-season. There's a reason I've nicknamed him "Neo".
The touchdown to Jordy Nelson was very impressive from my vantage point....again, he appeared to be blanketed and made the pass falling away from the defender. There were several in my section who seemed to question whether or not he got two feet in bounds, but minutes later, the call was made to exit the stadium. We hung out as long as possible, catching some pictures of the ominous clouds, then ducking into the tunnel just as the wind hit. It was pretty scary, as all of the newspapers and noisemaker fans were lifted right out of the seats and swirled in the air around the stadium in dramatic fashion. The rain came down in sheets after that, and we watched safely from the concourse.
After about an hour or so, we were allowed back in, and were rewarded with perhaps the best fireworks display I've seen at Lambeau. It was again a pity many families left before seeing it (and I'm even further upset my phone and camera batteries were dead by that time), but that's the way it goes on Packers Family Night...not quite as you planned, but a Packer experience nonetheless.

Nice Job, CD, and thanks so much for doing this for all of us who aren't or weren't able to be there.
Gotta say...Packer fans are the best in the whole wide world of sports. And why not? We've got the best darn team to cheer for! Go Pack Go

Thanks for sharing, C.D. We took a family trip to the first family night when I was 11. I really agree with everything said. We worked in a couple practices in the week before the scrimmage and it was my favorite family vacation growing up. Nothing flashy, but that place came alive to me in a way it could have never back home in Dubuque, IA. We've been back as a family to games since, but it's usually just for the game. Training camp and family night really allow you to sit back and take everything in you wish you had time to on game-days.

When I saw Nick at Camp last year that rely struck me as well how big he is compared to WRs, CBs and the other safeties.

I wish we would have been able to wait out the rain, but oh well...hopefully we get the whole show next year :)

I took my entire family here for the first time (wife & 4 kids - 8, 7, 6 & 4) to see Lambeau and the players. Just great to have a chance to show the kids the stadium and to kick off the football year. Even with the storms, all the fans were very orderly, which I don't think would be the case in most statiums. Hats off to the drum corp as they were walking through the concorse and providing entertainment for the waiting fans. Fireworks were great! Wonderful way to cap the evening. Best Fans! Best Organization! Best Team! GO PACK!
