Titans Sign Pair of 7th Rounders

The Tennessee Titans have reached four-year deals with a pair of seventh-round picks, the club announced on Tuesday.

Agreeing to deals were wide receiver Marc Mariani and defensive tackle David Howard.

Mariani was a walk-on turned All-American wide receiver/kick returner for the University of Montana. Mariani caught 165 passes for a school-record 3,034 yards and 29 touchdowns in 39 games over the last three seasons. Mariani also averaged 29.4 yards on 27 kick returns, and 16.0 yards on 61 punt returns.

Mariani set the Montana single-season receiving yardage record in 2009 with 1,495, and in 2008, established the school-record for single-season all-purpose yards with 2,265 in 2008. The 6-0, 190-pound Mariani earned first-team All-Big Sky honors as both a receiver and return specialist in ’08.

Mariani ran a 4.48-second time in the 40-yard dash, and posted a 36.5” vertical leap and 10’03” broad jump at his Pro Day. The sure-handed receiver’s best bet towards earning a roster spot on the Titans will come via the return game.

A four-year starter at Brown University, Howard (6-3, 293) was one of the most dominating players the Ivy League has seen in recent years. Howard posted 75 tackles during his career, including 32.5 for a loss and 17.5 quarterback sacks.

Howard was first-team All-Ivy League the last two seasons.

Having seen double-teams throughout his college career, Howard is strong (39 reps in the bench press at his Pro Day) and stout against the run. Howard will likely stick on the Titans’ 53-man roster, and will be a project for renowned Titans defensive line coach Jim Washburn to work with.

Mariani and Howard join defensive backs Alterran Verner (4th round) and Myron Rolle (6th round) as members of the Titans' 2010 draft class to sign contracts.
