The Pittsburgh Steelers announced that they have extended the contract of head coach Mike Tomlin through the 2012 season, with an option for 2013.

"Mike Tomlin has proven to be one of the top head coaches in the National Football League in a relatively short time," said Steelers’ President Art Rooney II. "His unique ability to lead the team and motivate individuals have been key factors in our success over recent years."

Tomlin has one year, and an option year, remaining on the five-year, $12.5 million dollar contract he signed with the Steelers in 2007 to replace longtime head coach Bill Cowher.

In his first three seasons in Pittsburgh, Tomlin has a 31-17 regular season record. Under Tomlin, the Steelers are 3-1 during the post-season, including a win over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII in Tomlin's second season on the Steelers' sidelines.

Financial details of Tomlin's extension, which was originally reported by Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on July 13, were not disclosed.

"I have been blessed to have the opportunity to be the head coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers,” said Tomlin. "I am excited to have the opportunity to live and work in this great city, and to focus on the true matter at hand, which is winning football games and bringing another Super Bowl title to Pittsburgh."
