Slimmed Down Harvey Hopes to Get More Sacks

Since the Jacksonville Jaguars traded up in the 2008 NFL Draft to him, defensive end Derrick Harvey has posted 5.5 quarterback sacks in 32 games, 25 of which--including all 16 last season--he's started.

In addition to the 5.5 quarterback sacks, Harvey has just 16 quarterback hits during his two seasons. For comparison's sake, most of the NFL's top pass-rushers get 20-25 hits on quarterbacks each season.

To help get to the quarterback quicker, Harvey took the advice of new defensive line coach Joe Cullen and has dropped 15 pounds this off-season, Vito Stellino of the Florida Times-Union reports.

"I thought bigger was better," Harvey said. "Speed is better. You've got to be rushing all day, and you can't be 280 rushing in this heat."

Thus far, Harvey's new approach has impressed head coach Jack Del Rio.

"I see a work in progress," Del Rio said. "I see a guy that's making improvement and changing his body. He's leaner. He's stronger. He's more fit, and I think he's doing a nice job of pushing as coach Cullen is going to ensure and insist that he does."

2010 is a critical season for Harvey. Not only is he trying to shed the "bust" label, but Harvey can significantly boost his 2011 and 2012 base salaries through performance incentives. Playing opposite an accomplished pass-rusher like Kampman should help Harvey reach the quarterback, as will the addition of a disruptive "3" technique tackle such as Tyson Alualu, and the continued development of second-year run-stuffer Terrence Knighton.
