Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald reports that Shawn Springs failed a physical, which led to his release by the New England Patriots on Tuesday.

Rapoport notes that Springs was a mainstay on the Patriots' injury reports throughout the 2009 season, and that Springs underwent knee surgery (arthroscopic) after the season.

"It's not a knee issue", Springs told the Boston Globe after he was released on Tuesday.
