Rugby Star Inglis Draws Interest From Jets

The New York Jets have inquired about Australian rugby star Greg Inglis, reports Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

"The Jets contacted us about Greg -- it wasn't the other way around," OzPunt's Paul Shepherd told The Sun-Herald. "If he's serious, we can organize trials, but we wouldn't be doing another thing until we heard from Greg or his manager.

"He could go any time he wants, but there could be an opportunity for him to trial after the last round of the NRL,” Shepherd continued. ”They’d put him through a variety of drills and then talk to him about where his best position would be.

"He would be absolutely sensational (as a kick returner). Imagine him returning the ball with three or four blokes blocking for him."

I reported on Inglis' drawing interest from NFL teams on May 15, and many of the responses I got were dismissive of the idea that a rugby player, no matter how talented an athlete he is, could have be a success in the NFL at a non-kicking position. I agree that it would be difficult for a player, like Inglis, to be a starter in the NFL, but I do see a dynamic who could make an immediate impact if used in a specific role. With the right coaching, anything is possible.
