Rhys Lloyd to Sign With the Panthers

Free agent kicker Rhys Lloyd will sign with the Carolina Panthers today, reports Darin Gantt of the Rock Hill Herald.

Lloyd was brought in for a workout after rookie kicker Todd Carter's back sidelined him after one kickoff during the season-opening loss to the New York Giants.

The 6-0, 238-pound Lloyd handled kickoff duties for the Panthers for 33 games between 2007-09, posting 53 touchbacks on his 166 attempts. Lloyd signed a two-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings during the off-season, but was released when the team opted not to carry two kickers into the regular season.

Pressed into duty on Sunday, John Kasay, the Panthers' 40-year old field goal and extra point kicker, averaged 57 yards on his four kickoffs after not handling those responsibilities since late in the '07 season.
