Ravens S Ed Reed Wants a New Contract

Less than two weeks after declaring he's "35% recovered" from off-season hip surgery, and suggesting that he could miss the entire season and has contemplated retirement, Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed is seeking a new contract.

Jamison Henley of the Baltimore Sun reports that Reed tells 105.7 FM that he's looking for an upgrade on the three years and $19.7 million dollars remaining on a six-year, $40 million dollar contract extension Reed signed in 2007.

"I’m not making it a big deal," Reed said, according to Hensley. "[But] I think it needs to be taken care of.

"I’m not going to ask the Ravens about anything if I’m not going to play any much longer," Reed added. "I appreciate the opportunity that the Ravens have given me. I’m not about to ask them for anything if I’m not going to be playing. My focus is to get myself back. I’m coming back for at least for one more year."

Some may point to the remaining years and salaries on Reed's contract and wonder how an admittedly injured player can ask for a new deal. But the six-time Pro Bowl safety has already received all the guaranteed money from his last contract that he's going to get, and Reed's injuries and escalating base salaries ($3.6M in '09 jumps to $6M in '10, with $7.2M in '12) make him a prime candidate to be released for financial purposes.

Reed's search for a new deal isn't as much about money, as it is about security.
