Jets Talking Contract With Darrelle Revis

While New York Jets All-Pro center Nick Mangold awaits a new contract, All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis is in talks with the franchise about extending his contract beyond the 2011 season.

"They’re trying to renegotiate my (contract) too before the season just like Nick," Revis told Manish Mehta of The Star-Ledger. "Everybody would like too. We got a bunch of guys in the same position."

According to NFLPA records, Revis is scheduled to earn a base salary of $550,000 in 2010. The two-time Pro Bowler has reached playing-time percentage benchmarks that void the final two years of his six-year rookie contract, which included $11 million dollars in guaranteed money.

Unlike Mangold, who is scheduled to earn $3.3 million dollars in base salary this season, Revis' slightly-above-minimum base salaries make getting around the 30% rule governing contract extensions in an uncapped year a bit problematic.

To get around this, the Jets will likely need to include a hefty signing bonus, or they could follow the San Francisco 49ers/Patrick Willis model, and include a "supersede" bonus, as explained by Andrew Brandt of the National Football Post.
