Giants Sign 3rd Round S Chad Jones

The New York Giants announced that they have signed with third-round safety Chad Jones.

Financial terms on what's believed to be a four-year deal were not disclosed. Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger reports kicker Sam Swank has been released to fit Jones on the 80-man roster.

Jones (6-2, 221) started 19 of his 40 career games at Louisiana State University, totaling 158 tackles, including 7.5 for a loss and 2 quarterback sacks. Jones intercepted five passes, and had 16 total pass break-ups. Jones also averaged 17.1 yards on 7 kick returns during his career, and averaged 10.8 yards on 31 punt returns, bringing one punt back for 93-yard touchdown last season.

Jones, who was named second-team All-SEC after last season, opted to forgo his senior season to enter the NFL Draft.

A two-sport star at LSU, Jones was selected in the 13th round of the 2007 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros, and was chosen in the 50th round by the Milwaukee Brewers in this year's draft.

Jones played strong safety in college, but has the speed and athleticism to play free safety in the NFL. He's ticketed to play behind Antrel Rolle, so his initial impact will be on special teams, as both a returner and a key member of the kick and punt coverage units. Jones may also get on the field in nickel situations this season, as well.

Jones is the first of the Giants' seven draft picks in 2010 to agree to a deal.
