Elway Named Executive VP of Broncos

The Denver Broncos announced that they have named Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway Executive Vice President of Football Operations.

Broncos Chief Operating Officer Joe Ellis has been named Team President.

"John Elway's leadership, competitiveness and passion for the Denver Broncos will position this team for long-term success through his work leading our football operations," Broncos Owner and CEO Pat Bowlen said. "John has won championships as both a player and executive, and his experience will be a valuable addition to this franchise. He is the perfect fit for this role, and I am excited to welcome him back to the Denver Broncos."

Elway will formally be introduced during a 1:30 MST press conference on Wednesday.

Current Broncos general manager Brian Xander's future role with the Elway-run club remains uncertain, but after the firing of head coach Josh McDaniels, who had significant authority over personnel matters, Xanders hoped to remain with the club in some capacity.

"There's discussions going with John Elway and we'll see where those lead," Xanders said according to The Denver Post. "I'm all for the Broncos bringing on John Elway. He knows football, he knows the Broncos. He's a winner. There's a great culture of winning here, and obviously he was a big part of creating that.

"Obviously, there's uncertainty with my role after this season with respect to Josh. I've made it clear this is where I want to be and I do have the experience and qualifications to help this team. To me the uncertainty is: What is the organization's structure going forward?"

Xanders' future, along with the team's search for a head coach, figure to be hot topics during this afternoon's press conference.
