Colts DE Robert Mathis Skips OTAs

To express his dissatisfaction with his contract, Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowl defensive end Robert Mathis is skipping the team's voluntary "Organized Team Activity" sessions, Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star reports.

Mathis has two years and slightly more than $7 million dollars remaining on a six-year, $30 million dollar contract extension Mathis signed in 2006. The 6-2, 245-pound defensive end from Alabama A&M has been a bargain for the Colts, totaling 63 quarterback sacks over his seven-year career, with 59.5 coming over the last six seasons.

The 29-year old Mathis has posted at least 9.5 quarterback sacks in five of his seven seasons in the NFL, and is coming off back-to-back Pro Bowl seasons. Quarterback Peyton Manning is first in line to receive a new contract this off-season, and Mathis would join a crowded line of Colts who are looking for new deals.

Nineteen different Colts have expiring contracts in 2010, and wide receivers Reggie Wayne and Pierre Garcon are signed through 2011 only. Historically, the Colts have been a bit more proactive re-signing players on the offensive side of the football, so Mathis may have to sit tight and/or turn in another 10+ quarterback sack season before he gets a new deal.
