Colts CB Kevin Thomas Injures Knee

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Indianapolis Colts third-round cornerback Kevin Thomas injured his knee during last weekend's mini-cmap, and the injury could threaten Thomas' rookie season.

Paul Kuharsky, who covers the AFC South for ESPN.com, adds that Thomas is scheduled to undergo surgery.

Thomas, who played his college ball at USC, appeared in nine games for the Trojans as a freshman, totaling 7 tackles, primarily on special teams. Thomas opened the 2006 season as a starter, but injuries cost him most of the next two seasons, including a shoulder injury that kept him out for the entire 2007 campaign. Thomas returned in a back-up role in 2008, and posted 57 tackles and 11 pass break-ups as a starter in 2009.

Thomas ran a 4.41-second time in the 40-yard dash, and the 6-0, 192-pound cornerback posted a vertical jump of 34.5" and a 10'6" broad jump at the Combine in Indianapolis, cementing his status as a Day Two pick. (Thomas was chosen with the 94th overall pick.)

Before stepping on the field for post-draft mini-camps, rookies sign an injury protection waiver, which assures the player that the team will negotiate in good faith should the player be injured during the mini-camp. Last season, third-round picks Tyrone McKenzie (New England) and Robert Brewster (Dallas), and fourth-round pick Stanley Arnoux (New Orleans) were injured prior to signing contracts, and missed the entire 2009 season. Their contracts, including signing bonuses/guaranteed money, were in-line with what the players chosen around them received.
