Clausen Out to Improve Daily

Carolina Panthers second-round quarterback Jimmy Clausen open camps third on the Panthers' depth chart, behind expected starter Matt Moore and second-year passer Hunter Cantwell.

According to Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer, Clausen's main objective this summer is to improve every day.

"When I went to Notre Dame there were three quarterbacks ahead of me," Clausen said. "Whenever you get your reps, you have to go out there and make plays. I think that's the biggest thing. When your name gets called, whether it's one play or five plays, it doesn't really matter. You have to produce and make plays.

"My goal is to go out each and every day and improve what I need to improve and do everything I can to help the team improve. If I do that things are going well."

Clausen signed a four-year deal worth over $4 million dollars, including over $2.2 million in guarantees. Clausen's deal included a "Quarterback Premium", which though base salary escalators can push his deal to $6.3 million dollars in total value.

Another interesting tidbit in Clausen's contract is when his "one-timer" (an easily achievable bonus in first- and second-round contracts that is backed by future base salary guarantees) comes due.

Most of the second-rounders to date will receive their "one-timers" on various days of 2011 training camp, but a source with knowledge of Clausen's contract says his $923,00 payment isn't due until the 15th day of the 2012 league year, even if Clausen reaches the playing time or performance incentives to trigger the payment in 2010.

If the bonus is not earned in 2010 or 2011, the Panthers can supersede the contract and convert it to a signing bonus early in the 2012 league year.
