Chargers S Kevin Ellison to Miss Mini-Camp

San Diego Chargers safety Kevin Ellison, arrested on Monday for possession of a controlled substance, will miss the Chargers' mini-camp, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Redondo Beach, California police arrested Ellison on Monday afternoon after a search of his vehicle uncovered 100 Vicodin tablets. Ellison had been pulled over for speeding.
Acee reports that the Chargers have instructed Ellison to stay away from the team's mini-camp to both avoid bringing the distraction to the team, and to allow Ellison the time to tend to his legal matter.
The Chargers' mini-camp begins today and ends on Friday.
Last night, Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reported that Ellison did not receive the pills from the Chargers, and that Ellison's illegal possession of a controlled substance could land the 2009 sixth-round pick out of USC in jail.
Ellison's agent, Jerome Stanley, told the Union-Tribune on Tuesday that Ellison was "embarrassed" by the incident, claiming that Ellison wanted a season's worth of painkillers because of knee surgery. Ellison underwent three knee surgeries at USC, but by all accounts, has not undergone any additional procedures this off-season.
As for jail time, Ellison could likely avoid that by giving up where he obtained the painkillers. New England Patriots offensive tackle Nick Kaczur was arrested for possession of a controlled substance in 2008, and wore a wire during three separate purchases of OxyContin. Kaczur was not even suspended by the National Football League.
