Broncos Table Champ Bailey Contract Talks

According to Josina Anderson of FOX-31 in Denver, the Denver Broncos have informed cornerback Champ Bailey's agents that they are tabling talks towards a long-term contract extension until after the season.

The 32-year old Bailey will earn $13 million in total compensation in 2010, the final year of the seven-year, $63 million contract he signed upon his arrival in Denver via a 2004 trade with the Washington Redskins involving running back Clinton Portis.

Since arriving in Denver, Bailey has started 67 passes defensed and 28 interceptions, three of which he's returned for touchdowns, and has made 5 Pro Bowls.

A first-round pick (7th overall) out of Georgia by the Redskins in 1999, Bailey earned trips to the Pro Bowl in all but one season (2008) during the 2000s, and was arguably the least surprising name on the NFL's All-Decade team when it was announced in January.

Bailey issued a statement, which Anderson tweeted:

"I’m not worried about that. I don’t need them to kiss my (edit). I don’t need them to do me any favors. I'm under contract right now, I plan on playing it out. If another offer comes my way that seems like a good fit, or that might be worth signing, that’s what I’ll do. But I mean I’m not going to beg somebody to come to me to keep me on the team. It’s not going to happen. I’ve never been that way, and I never will be. We all know what’s at stake. They’re taking a risk, and I’m taking a risk. Who is to say at the end of this season something gets worked out with this team or somewhere else, but they know that."
