Bills QB Brian Brohm Seeks Early Edge in QB Competition

As a second-year player, Buffalo Bills quarterback Brian Brohm will use his ability to participate in the upcoming rookie mini-camp as a way to get a head-start in the open competition for the Bills' starting quarterback job.

"I think it’s a pretty big advantage going into OTAs and the next mini-camps to get this time under my belt," Brohm told Chris Brown of BuffaloBills.com. “You see the offense develop, you get to run the plays and see how they unfold and how coach likes to call them and what he wants with different coverages.

"It’s five extra days that you get to go out there and compete and be in the meeting room with the coaches and see what they want out of the quarterbacks. It’s definitely an advantage."

A second-round pick out of Louisville in 2008 by the Green Bay Packers, Brohm struggled in the '08 pre-season (45.2 passer rating) and spent his rookie season as the emergency third quarterback behind Packers starter Aaron Rodgers and 2008 seventh-round draft pick Matt Flynn. Brohm struggled with turnovers in last year's pre-season, and was waived as part of the team's final roster cuts, and re-signed to the practice squad.

In Week 11, Brohm was signed to the Bills' active roster, and six weeks later, made his NFL debut as the starting quarterback in the Bills' 31-3 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Brohm completed 17-of-29 pass attempts for 146 yards, but was intercepted twice and finished with a passer rating of 43.2.

Brohm closed out the Bills' 30-7 win over the Indianapolis Colts in the regular season finale with three kneel downs and entered the 2010 off-season in a three-way competition for the starting job with veterans Trent Edwards and Ryan Fitzpatrick.

With a new coaching staff in place, Brohm feels there's a level playing field.

"Everyone is starting from square one and I think that’s a good thing for me just battling for a position," he said. "When you come in as a rookie, sometimes when you come to a new team there are other guys there that have been through the system that know special things better than you do and you have to play catch up. But right here we’re all starting from the same point."
