All You Need To Know About Cutler

Cutler is 17-20 with no playoff appearances since supplanting Jake Plummer late in the 2006 season

From Chris Mortensen's piece on the trade(s)-that-almost-were drama over the weekend:

Cutler is 17-20 with no playoff appearances since supplanting Jake Plummer late in the 2006 season

UPDATE: Gene Wojciechowski nails it.

All you need to know about the Broncos defense while Cutler has been their starting QB: it sucks.

Very true. Very true. I just have yet to see the kid 'get it' so to speak. I don't think he has that locker room, not by a long shot.

I kind of have a soft spot for Cutler, so I am quite biased. However, I know what you're talking about. I actually had an argument with my dad, who thinks Rivers is a punk, when I pointed out that Cutler was more of a punk because at least Rivers directs his vitriol towards the **other** team.

I hate, hate, hate, HATE articles like this.

"Because Cutler's record as a starter is 17-20. Because new Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels just happened to coach Cassel last season. And Cassel's team finished 11-5, including a 41-7 victory against Cutler's Broncos in October."

As if that game can be boiled down to: 'The Pats had Cassel, the Broncos had Cutler... and that's all you need to know about why the game ended 41-7.' How about the fact that Cassel played on a much better team? A team that is coached by the best coach in football? And how about we cherry pick another random game from the season? How about the one where the Broncos waltzed into New York and beat Brett Favre's Jets 34-17? The same Jets team that had just upset the Titans.

"So what if the Broncos considered proposals from the Bucs? Who cares whether they listened to an offer from the Detroit Lions? When you haven't reached the playoffs since '05, when you gag away a three-game division lead with three games left, you listen to everybody about anybody."

This is total BS. The most important position on the field is QB, and the Broncos have one that Wojciechowski himself called a "possibly great talent." You do not trade franchise QBs. Period.

I'm not going to get into the fact that Cutler is one of 53 and it isn't his fault the defense gave up 30 points to the Bill (THE BILLS!) and 52 points to the Chargers in the final two weeks.

Finally, we have no idea how McDaniels's initial meeting with Cutler went. I'm sure it went something like "I'm really excited to get to work with you Jay. You're my guy Jay. Love you man." Then, the Broncos turn around and try to trade for Cassel. Personally, I thought the Broncos were incredibly stupid for trying to trade Cutler for Cassel. I couldn't understand why the Broncos would risk alienating their franchise QB to acquire a guy who has only played a season in the NFL.

BTW, according to Football Outsiders, Cutler was 8th in DVOA last year, while Cassel was 20th.

In all honesty, I just liked:

Will someone please give Jay Cutler his pacifier, hand him his favorite blankie and put him back in his crib for his afternoon nap? Because if he cries anymore about a trade that didn't happen, we'll have to check his Pampers.
