Woodson Signs Contract Extension

Charles Woodson has reportedly signed a contract extension with the Packers

From Josina Anderson from FOX 31 Sports in Denver:

Fox31 Breaking News: Sources: The Green Bay Packers & Charles Woodson have agreed on a new deal. Woodson is expected to sign later today

There had been reports that Woodson had approached the Packers about a new contract earlier this offseason. One has to think that after seeing the amount of money the Jets handed over to Darrelle Revis, a player that Woodson beat out for Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2009, that Woodson's people started pushing for an extension/more guaranteed money.

A Packers spokesman declined to comment.

We'll have more as this story develops.

UPDATE: Tom Silverstein has confirmed that Woodson has indeed agreed to an extension. Per his Twitter feed:

A source close to Charles Woodson has confirmed that the Packers CB has agreed to a contract extension. Should be finalized in a day or so.

No word on the terms yet, but years and dollars are added. Woodson was due to make 7.4 mil this year and had three years left at 22.2 mil.

UPDATE 2:

According to Adan Schefter, it is a two year extension, meaning Woodson is signed for the next five years.

UPDATE 3:

More from Silverstein:

Woodson, who turns 34 in October, and the Packers have agreed on the terms of a contract extension that will bump up the 33-year-old corner's salary and increase the number of years on the deal. Woodson was scheduled to make $6.5 million in base salary over the next three seasons with the potential of an added $900,000 roster bonus each year.

The Packers probably felt compelled to boost Woodson's contract after Oakland cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha signed a six-year deal worth a reported $45 million, including $28. 5 million guaranteed and New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis signed a four-year, $46 million deal with $32 guaranteed.

UPDATE 4:

The Packers have made it official:

The Green Bay Packers have signed CB Charles Woodson a contract extension through 2014. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, announced the signing Thursday.Woodson was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year by The Associated Press in 2009, becoming only the second Packer to win the award (DE Reggie White, 1998). He posted a career-high nine interceptions, two sacks and four forced fumbles last season on the way to his sixth career Pro Bowl bid, and he also earned NFC Defensive Player of the Month honors three times in ’09. Woodson is the only NFL player to register seven interceptions and two sacks in back-to-back seasons (2008-09) since sacks became an official league statistic in 1982.

Acquired by Green Bay as an unrestricted free agent in 2006 after spending his first eight seasons with the Oakland Raiders, Woodson has recorded 28 of his 45 career interceptions during his four seasons with the Packers. He holds the Packers franchise record with eight defensive touchdowns (seven interceptions, one fumble return), and has posted seven or more interceptions in three of his four seasons in Green Bay, joining Bobby Dillon as the only players in team history to intercept seven or more passes in a season three times.

Hell if he can stay half as good as he was last year for those 5 years, that would be fantastic. The guy is amazing, so I don't expect his talent to drop off that much.

Always nice to reward production, and the leadership is big. And thanks to the uncapped year and non-guaranteed salaries, the long-run-cripple meter stays low. Sounds alright to me.

Now I don't expect Woodson to bitch about the team's lack of leadership, as he's the leader, and a well-paid leader.

34 is pretty old. I would be happy if we got this year and next out of him.

Woodson goes till he's 37, he'll move to safety, and be a great one. A la his "cousin" Rod.

Revis and Asomugha got paid like they have a hospital wing named after them.

TT has done such a great job this offseason, I think it goes unnoticed bu most.

The way he has handled extensions and FAs, has send some clear messages, that only benefit the Packers:
- You play well for us and be a good boy, and we'll reward you handsomely.
- We'll put our guys before we bring in anyone else.

That not only boost the current team's morale, and keep players from bitching and being unhappy, but also puts notice on other team's players, that GB is a great place to be.

Amen Brother RS. So far as I can tell he's got the only show in town which runs this way. Now, if we can just get him to land/bite on a dynamite free agent signing at OLB, CB, or return man . . .

PackersRS, here's the proof to back up your assertion, posted today (9/10) from "The Biggs Report" on National Football Post:

Tramon Williams, on playing in his final year of contract while awaiting a possible Long term, big time contract- or not:

“I look at it going out and playing football," Williams told Silverstein. “As long as do your job, this organization will show you that they're loyal. I'm not really worrying about that (contract stuff). The organization is first-class; it rewards players who show they're doing what they're asked to do.
"It's not even running through my mind. I'm happy for Charles period.”

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Could-Tramon-Williams-be-next-for-pa...

Take note, all of you nit-wits who think Ted Thompson has a reputation amongst players around the league as being "cheap". As has been proven time and time again, TT and the Packers take care of good, loyal football players in GB.. And the players know it.

Good for Woodson and good for the Packers. Being that #4 quite clearly made it be known that he wanted no part of representing the Packers in retirement, I'm thinking Woodson will gladly accept that role, taking his place in the ring of honor along with White, Hutson, Adderley, Starr, etc., sans Judas.

Do you see Woodson moving to safety as he gets up in years? I feel that he can switch over to Nickel corner and come in sub packages...especially if Burnett becomes a great safety! Maybe we could have 3 safeties!!

He's played there before and has said in the past that he plans on doing just that.
