What If Crabtree Falls?

I saw this question on Rob Demovsky's chat over at the Press-Gazette this afternoon and thought it would be great comment fodder - If Michael Crabtree, for whatever reason, falls to the Packers with the ninth pick...does Thompson take him as the best available player?

I tell you what - I bet he does.

if he does, then what do we think that means as far as the rest of the draft, trades, etc? do we trade a james jones? i can't imagine we would get that much for him although he has shown signs of being pretty damn good. has their been any news about thompson having interest in jason taylor? having crabtree on offense would be amazing...and it would be fun to watch shoot-out after shoot-out, but once in a while it would be nice to get a couple of sacks too!

thats simple.

I'd TAKE HIM. Unless a team is willing to overpay greatly in a trade to get him, you draft him.

He would absolutely be the BPA at 9. As great as our WR Corp is right now... it can always get better. not to mention Donald is another year older. Thats just what I would do.

I think honestly if TT was in that situation a trade down would be in the works, because drafting another WR is one thing, but paying another rookie WR the amount the #9 spot would fetch is another.

Crabtree is amazing. It would be a tough call. I don't like the idea of another wide receiver as much as anyone else, but I could see Crabtree being the best receiver in the NFL and a perennial Pro Bowler.

Take Crabtree. Put out feelers for a trade down. Let Jennings know he has to come to the negotiation table. Ted traded Javon for what turned out to be 6 picks, so one year of production and he's worth an extra year of picks? You gotta do that.

Yeah, you take him if he is the best player on the board. You don't draft for need in the top 10.

TT has already been quoted that "need' may play a bigger part of this year's draft. BPA has many different definitions & categories. One is "BPA based on present Needs".
WRs picked in the 1st round are the highest risk pick of any positional player.
Note: -P. Warrick, D. Stallworth, R. Gardner, D. Terrell, K. Robinson, C. Rodgers, Troy Williamson. All top ten picks.

He won't fall that far.He could be great trade bait if he does.Lot of teams this year looking for a reciever. They don't need to keep him not enough balls to go around now.Great player to trade to the Giants for defensive help.

Yes, he won't fall. But he takes Crabtree and trades Donald Driver. No question.

"TT has already been quoted that “need’ may play a bigger part of this year’s draft"

I don't think TT ignores a premier player at #9 because it doesn't fit a need. Maybe if two players grade out fairly close then you opt for the need position and I think that is what TT was getting at in that article. I think QB is the only position on a roster that you skip or reach for because of need in the first round. Later in draft I think need becomes more important because more players grade out similar and because of guys you may of already drafted.

With todays events regarding the Broncos now announcing Cutler is going to be traded may shake up the top 10 a little but not too much. I still think J-ville takes Crabtree if he lands at #8 seeing they need a receiver real bad since releasing Matt Jones.

For what its worth, Mike Lombardi thinks Crabtree will be available at #9.

Is it just me or would TT start looking a bit like Matt Millen if he starts taking more and more WR's even though there are other positions that DESPERATELY need help. (DT, RE, FS, ect.) Do we really want to go down the same route that Detroit took? Granted we are leaps and bounds better than Detroit but it can definitely put us on the wrong path. Personally I don't see why TT would take Crabtree when there are so many other needs. If I were TT I would trade down if the BPA is Crabtree. Find someone of value that you can actually use. And if he trades Donald as dustybricks6 is suggesting then I will personally go kick TT in the crotch. Donald is one of the biggest and best leaders on the team today and losing him would be HUGELY detrimental to the team morale and would make the team that much more vulnerable to getting psyched out.

John Kuhn's agent says, he will be back with the Packers. That's good I like Kuhn's attitude and effort. It does say something about FA, however. The FA market is not all that good for most players. A few highly touted guys get the money, everyone else is subjected to bargain hunting.
