Tyler Lancaster back with the Packers

The former undrafted free agent provides rotational depth along the defensive line.

ESPN reports that the Packers are bringing back defensive lineman Tyler Lancaster.

The former undrafted free agent out of Northwestern has 79 tackles, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery over the cours of his career so far, but this move is clearly not about Lancaster's playmaking ability.

Here's hoping for bigger and better things to come to our defensive line.

Speaking of defense: I finally watched the "Life of Charles Woodson" last night and the NFL was running current info. below the screen, mock drafts, T. Brady having "minor" knee surgery, etc. One item caught my attention: that Pettine has been hired by the Bears as a Senior Defensive assistant. Yeah, The Bears Still Suck!

Back to back 13-3 seasons and you gripe about poor drafting? Every team has hits and misses and it doesn't help when you're regularly picking 29th in each round.

Lancaster is our backup run stuffer, what do you expect? At least he comes cheap as we aren't getting much more out of Lowry and he comes with a bigger price tag.

I really can’t believe there is a strong possibility that I will turn on a Packers game next season and see Dean Lowry, Tyler Lancaster, and Kevin King on the field in green and yellow. MIDDLE OF THE DEFENSE has been ignored, outside of Kenny Clark, for a decade. I’m just at a loss at this point. It’s become comical... another season of 94 and 95, allowing 97 to get double and triple teamed... another season allowing damn near 5 yards a carry... Please PLEASE draft Barrmore... or resign Snacks? Give him a full offseason with the team. ANYTHING other than what I watched last season

Don't you read other comments here?

There is nothing wrong...we keep reading, the Packers were 13-3 and 26-6 to death in here, all is well.

What they don't tell you is, what the Packers record would be without Rodgers.

But i guess it's ok, we'll be finding out soon enough.

These are minimum contract level depth payers on a 90 man roster. Sometimes I wonder at comments here.

Lancaster is a decent depth role/situational player who we didn’t tender so will be cheaper than minimum tender and is not guaranteed a roster spot. I wouldn’t be shocked to see others like Redmond and Greene brought into camp to compete cheaply. Every team does it every year.

Once again I will say that even drafting in the 29th position, somewhere among our first 3 picks there must be a DL who can play better than Lancaster. If we find that guy we can chuck Lancaster after the pre-season or maybe a few games into the season once our drafted DL gets up to speed. All we need is a guy who can hold the point of attack and he will be an improvement over Lancaster who mostly gets pushed all over the field.

We just keep making and retaining the same mediocre mistakes and wonder why we lose in the playoffs or blame the losses on Rodgers, when we have only about 12-15 players out of 53 who actually belong on an NFL roster. Yet we keep signing guys like King and Lancaster!!??!! Sounds a bit similar to the definition of insanity to me. But the beat goes on and here we go again.

Thanks, Since '61

No chucking necessary.

We have 6 DL on the 53, one inactive on gameday.
Clark, Lowry, Lancaster and Keke. Add two more. No chucking required.

I am appalled that a longtime fan would think that most of the team is garbage. It’s not true, it’s not fair.

LH - It is fair if we look at the roster honestly and objectively.

A) Defense
1. DL we have Clark as our only legit NFL quality player. I’ll grant that Keke has some upside. After that we basically have JAGS who are pushed around.
2. LBs we have the Smiths and Gary. Barnes and Martin showed promise during 2020 but 2021 we tells us what we really have in them. Behind them we have ???
3. CB Alexander and then who? Besides Alexander who can we depend on opposite Alexander or in the slot in a critical situation?
4. Safety - I’m hoping/expecting Savage to continue his progress. Amos has experience but is inconsistent especially in coverage. Behind them, again ???
B) Offense
5. QB Rodgers and then literally nothing as of today. No one who has even dressed for an NFL game.
6 RB Jones. Dillon remains a ? to me because 21 carries in a game against the Titans does not make an NFL career. Although I believe that Dillon has upside particularly running behind a healthy Deguara.
7. WR Adams and then 4s and 5s. Lazard could evolve into a serviceable #3. We’ll see in 2021.
8. OL - Jenkins and Bak. But Bak is out for TBD amount of 2021. Turner has his moments but he has also been a turnstile. Runyon I believe has upside. The rest ?????
9. TE Tonyan still has upside. Lewis is an excellent blocker but his best receiving seasons are behind him. Then more ??? and JAGs.
Special Teams - Crosby only.

So that’s 14 legit NFL players plus Keke, Barnes, Martin, Amos, Dillon and Runyon who may evolve into players in this league.

As for the rest of the roster and as of today would we really miss any of the other players? Burks, King, ESB, MVS the other DBs or OLs. Why? Because they’re Packers. Maybe we over hype the rest of our roster a bit much.

Again my comments are based on as of today. I expect that some of our needs and ??? will be addressed in the draft and some additional FA signings between now and Week 1.

But we know the roster that we have and if we’re honest after our top 12-15 players that’s not that much there. And again when we to the playoffs our roster gets exposed.
Based on the results since 2010 that’s true, that’s fair and those are the facts. Whether it’s Bostick, or Randall or King or someone else, the roster weaknesses get exposed and we go home without the trophy. That’s the reality and yes it’s cold.
Maybe as a long time fan I can step outside the fanship and look at the roster objectively from the outside looking in. That’s what I do during this time of the year. I look for what’s wrong and what needs to be corrected. I criticize the FO and the team. That’s what the offseason is for IMO. Once we get to Week 1 I go back to my fan mode. But until then I try to avoid the hype and the propaganda and stay focused on where this team is at and where this team needs to be. And we still need DL, CB, ILB, OL, WR another RB and a backup QB. Maybe a few of those are already on the team but I haven’t seen them yet. Bottom line is that we have plenty of position groups that need improvement, depth and/or both. Stay well.
Thanks, Since ‘61

I'm more optimistic. Last year's D was roughly top 10. There's not a lot of regression candidates and most players are still young and ascending. Toss in a couple draft picks and a DC worth their salt and the D could be pretty good. Pair that with a top tier O and the Pack should be cookin!

In looking back on the Packer drafts since 2011, It seems Ted Thompson was not a good judge of DL and LB's. Since 2011 the Packers have drafted 15 LB's and 15 DL. Of the LB's, Blake Martinez was average (slow in coverage) and its too early to tell about Kamal Martin. The others are forgotten history. Of the DL, Mike Daniels and Kenny Clark are difference makers. Why can't we draft good LB's And DL. I'm from Chicago and not a bear fan, but they seem to build great defenses. WHY?

I wouldnt even have to look back. Failures all around. Continuously kept us from a 2nd title by the shit defensive product we put on the field. Year after year starting guys who would end up NEVER playing a snap for another NFL team. MD Jennings, Jerron Mcmiallian, DJ Smith, Vic So'oto, Dezmon Moses - I could go on forever baby thats just off the top of my head.

And Blake Martinez was above average. He got hung out to dry in 2019 by Pettines SHIT scheme. Blake Martinez was the best ILB we have had in a decade. Thats a fact. We couldnt afford him I get it. But that doesnt mean he didnt deserve to get his money. Giants and Giants fans are plenty happy with Blake and his contract.

I agree Blake Martinez is a good LB.

But I'm not so sure he got "hung out to dry" by "pettine's shit scheme", considering that Blake's stat line each of his years in green bay is almost exactly the same as the year he put in for the Giants.

He's played extremely consistently thus far in his career.. It doesn't seem he's been much more or less productive in the Giant's defense.

Organizational emphasis and scouting , I guess. Most Packer head coaches have come from an offensive background. As far as ILB goes, the Packers haven't drafted one in the first round specifically to play him inside in 40 years.

On the flip side, the Bears have been so clueless at QB throughout most of their history that it's hard to believe. O-line has been a struggle, too. Most of us shake our heads in bewilderment at them.

We've struck out a few times by drafting defensive linemen and then wanting them to play standing up as linebackers. Three disappointments come to mind: Jamal Reynolds, Nick Perry, and Datone Jones who were all 1st round draft choices. I admit I was disappointed in the Rashad Gary selection at number 12 in the first round a couple of years ago, but it seems my disappointment may have been premature and he may very well contribute as a 1st round selection. He showed an ability to be disruptive last season and I like his hustle. Third year starter or not? I hope so.

Well Thompson found Mike Pennel, but you were very unsatisfied with him! At the end he got his ring and 2nd SB presence with KC. Kenny Clark has only 2 NFCCG for comparison.

Packers fans are never ever satisfied with draft picks or UDFA. Packers fans never ever has patience to let player develop (last example MVS, Gary, drastic example Davante Adams), but when it comes to Packers fans dear, than fans are more than patient (example Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix).

Still, taking in consideration all your remarks, I believe more in professionals who are doing their job for life than weekend armchair GMs.

Is there mistakes from professionals? Yes, of course, there is, but much less than from all this armchair GMs.

And last remark. When player for whom you do not think is good make one mistake, you will note that mistake as prove of your opinion, and never give credit for all good that player did (example MVS fumble in overtime, but no mention how MVS was the best player in the last NFCCG!). Contrary to that when you like player he can do a lot of bad things, but you'll avoid to mentioned that (example Aaron Jones with 2 fumbles in the same NFCCG!).

I'm reading your comments. They are really informative and schooling me about football. But also schooling me how not to be impatient when I try to judge the player.

This is what I saw in comments many of you are posted here (not all of you!) and I might be wrong, but that is my opinion...

If you bring in a legit guy to play ahead of him (or if Keke takes a step), I've got no problem with Lancaster as a rotational NT who picks up snaps to help keep Clark fresh or fills in if someone gets dinged.

It's that "if" part that worries me. Maybe I've become a little jaundiced, but I don't want this signing to serve as an excuse for not drafting a solid prospect by the third round (again). Even if this draft isn't loaded with them, there's still a few that could help us out--maybe more in the future than now, but still...I want to see change and improvement.

I for one am happy to have him back. He is a solid NFL rotational player. plus why spend money and resources on guys who aren't going to play much and when they do aren't in critical positions.

What I mean is that The Packers play with 2 DL on 60% or more of the snaps (approx). KC is one of the best in the league, the other DL that was getting more snaps until injury was Keke.
Other considerations
The League is trending more and more to the pass further lessening IDL Value
In a 3-4 Def OLB are often considered DL and the Packers have been strong there with an emphasis on bigger guys
The Packers Defense has finished in the Top 10 (depending on the Metric (yards, pts, etc) the last 2 years (something is working)
The Packers have played well against the run every since the Tenn game and it had nothing to do with adding DL

Lancaster graded out fine the last couple of years and is dirt cheap (Hello they have zero cap room)

I for one hope GB does draft a DL, but please not a run stuffer only unless its in the least round or 2. If they can find a 3 down run and pass rush DL that can play NT, 3 or 5 Tech. Many of the bigger names are much more suited for Even man front (4 down Lineman)

If they can find one it could really help as the biggest issue with lancaster and Lowery wasn't the run defense but pass rush. When the packers have their base D in and 2 of your 3 DL have zero pass rush ability that buts a great deal of pressure on the DB in coverage and OLB in pass rush.

I like McNeil because he can stuff the run, Play 2 gap, force double teams PLUS push the pocket back in pass rush.
