Tuesday Roster Move Predictions

Brian takes a stab at the four roster moves the Packers must make before Tuesday's deadline.

If you think about it, the preseason works out kind of backwards. In the last preseason game when the starters are expected to play the least, the Packers are forced to trim their roster just two days before the game when they could use the most depth.

With Aaron Rodgers, Charles Woodson and other first teamers expected to a play a series, maybe two, the Packers need all the second- and third-string guys they can possibly get.

And that includes special teams where the Packers aren't going want to expose players who are guaranteed to make their 53-man roster to injury. When it comes to the second half of Thursday's game, they'd prefer not to even have guys like Brandon Chillar and Spencer Havner on the field.

So when it comes to the four roster moves the Packers must make by Tuesday's deadline, special teams could factor into the equation. They need guys who need all the exposure they can possibly get and have nothing to lose by giving their all on the suicide squad (kickoff), for example.

With that in mind, here's my prediction how things are going go down by Tuesday. That being said, keep in mind that I think it's always hard to predict this first round of cuts. There always seems to be at least one veteran cut that catches people by surprise.

  • Punter Chris Bryan – Tim Masthay seems to have taken control of the punting job. To that end, it would be beneficial for him to take every punt and every holding opportunity on Thursday in preparation for the regular season.
  • Offensive lineman Allen Barbre – Barbre has been dealing with some back issues, which could lead him to being placed on injured reserve instead of being cut. But either way, he doesn't make the 53-man roster. Seeing as he probably wouldn't play on Thursday anyway, might as well not cut someone else instead.
  • Defensive end Ronald Talley – Talley already is behind C.J. Wilson and Jarius Wynn as he fights for playing time along the defensive line. Combine that with limited special teams contributions, and Talley seems like a logical choice to let go.
  • Running back Quinn Porter – Porter, too, is dealing with an injury issue (knee). If he can't play on Thursday, there's no reason he should be kept at someone else's expense. The Packers could place him on injured reserve whereby they would retain his rights until next year. But if they do want him for the practice squad, they can always re-sign him for that role on Sunday.

I felt bad watching that ESPN special about the bike rides because I knew Talley wouldn't make the team (probably not even the PS). It was a funny piece though. I wish they would have made it longer than 2 min though.

Hopefully Brian is right. The end of the punting competition, and Allen Barbre.

Thoughts on if Bush will be cut once Harris' status is finalised?

I think OL is cleaned up first. There's a pretty clear picture of what that lineup is going to be and who has trade value. So Barbre and Breno in this round of cuts, then Spitz/EDS depending on if TT can find a trading partner.

Jarret Bush will never get cut. Ever. Ain't gonna happen. Same with Harrell, Justin.

Brian's philosophy toward the fourth game is dead on. Just who are the six maybe seven new guys who'' survive the final cut. Priority one - they must play St's at a high level. Can be developed in their position of choice is secondary.

I will watch Newhouse carefully in this game.

You'd think the first cut down would be after all of the preseason games are over. Would make sense to me.
