Thompson Acknowledges Packers May Add Kicker

In typical Ted Thompson fashion, the Packers general manager didn't tip his hat about roster construction or contract talk in Tuesday's press conference.

For example, when asked about the possibility of signing tight end Jermichael Finley to a long-term contract this afternoon, Thompson responded with an "I never talk about contract discussion or the like, but as a rule, we like to keep all of our players."

However, he did give one minor insight in that the Packers may add a kicker in the next couple days depending on Mason Crosby's injury status.

"We might," said Thompson. "We'll kind of see how it goes over the next couple of days."

Crosby "tweaked" his ankle last Friday, didn't participate in the scrimmage portion of Saturday's Family Night, was held out of last night's practice and may or may not practice the rest of this week as well.

The Packers have their first preseason game on Saturday at Cleveland against the Browns, and if Crosby isn't available, the Packers may sign a kicker as a fill-in.

Seeing as Crosby signed a five-year contract worth just under $15 million just over a week ago, any kicker the Packers bring probably shouldn't be viewed as competition.

Punter Tim Masthay doubles as the Packers' back-up kicker and could perform that function, it's just a matter of how much of a workload the Packers are comfortable placing on Masthay.

McCarthy did say on Monday night that he was hopeful Crosby will be ready to go against Cleveland.

Let Masthay kick this weekend. Why the heck not? Kickers get hurt during games all the time. Having an "experienced" back up is a small positive.

...and there was much rejoicing in Jersey Al's house!

I'd still rather they sign someone to do basic kicking than have Matshay "tweak" his ankle planting or something. I mean, we seem to finally have a punter worth a damn since Craig Hentrich.

Well, good point there-our glass dolls. If it's only for one game then let's do it. CALL IN THE MARCOL
