Thank You

I just wanted to thank everyone who donated to the cause of getting Cheesehead TV on-site at the NFL Scouting Combine. It is greatly appreciated.

Speaking of the Combine, feel free to use the comments below to let me know what it is you're most interested in hearing about. Obviously, I've never been before, I have no idea what to expect, and I'm kind of flying blind here. Should be fun :)

Unfortunatley, because of work and family obligations, I won't make it into Indianapolis until Thursday night. I'll be there all day Friday and most of Saturday. I think we'll be doing a live blog w/Brian over at Railbird Central during NFL Network's broadcasts, so you'll be able to use us to augment their coverage. They haven't said when McCarthy and Thompson are speaking yet. I'm just praying one or both are speaking Friday and not Thursday.

Thanks again. Into the wild we go.... ;)

I'm glad you made it! As for what to cover, you're the expert here, cover whatever the heck you want. I'll read it all. This is Pack blogging history right here. Epic win for us against all the other media.

Thanks Packers. For my part, it's not so much a 'win' against the legit media as it is a 'win' for the fans. I have very little, if any, filter as to what I bring our readers. Not exactly the case when it comes to the traditional media.

Here’s an abbreviated list of kids I’ve seen play the last couple of years that I believe are very underrated. I’m more focused on kids that will be potential gems in the 2nd – 5th rounds:

•Rodger Saffold (G/T) Indiana (versatile, large, powerful and flexible)
•Mike Johnson (G) Alabama (versatile, large, powerful and flexible)
•John Jerry (G) Ole Miss (versatile, large, powerful and flexible)
•Koa Misi (OLB) Utah (athletic beast, serious motor)
•Jason Worlids (OLB) VT (athletic beast, flexible)
•Alex Carrington (DE) I watched this kid twice this year, once dominating the Iowa Hawkeyes, one of the best college offensive lines. My favorite gem to go late 2nd or beyond.
•Amari Spivey (CB) Iowa (athletic, flexible hips, big)
•I honestly can’t speculate about other kids that show up in mock drafts since I haven’t seen them play.
* A.J. Edds (LB) Iowa (Large, great in coverage, athletic)

Very deep cornerback draft, late into round 3. Not a single LT is a ‘can’t miss’ kid like Joe Thomas. There will be a run on Tackles before pick #15. You need great scouting to successfully predict the transition of undersized DE’s in college to that of a 3-4 linebacker…..tough job, serious projection. My suggestion to you Aaron, watch the DE's, especially the kids that are undersized and projected to OLB in the 3-4. Specifically, watch them in the short-shuttle, cone drills and dropping into coverage. Straight line speed is overrated, watch the athletic drills that showcase burst, change of direction, read and react.

I'm not going to list the players individually, but I would like to here about some of the tackle prospects that could be around in the late first. Many of the "mock" drafts I see have us taking the same 1 or 2 tackles. Have fun and thanks in advance.

Interview a scout or two if you get a chance. Ask them what they look for when watching tape, while at the combine and in All-Star games. Also, what do they ask their respective colleges/staffs when doing background research? How does the talent within their division dictate the type of player they look for?

I would love to hear insight into the scouts mind and how they advocate for 'their guy' while sitting with the entire scouting staff, coach and GM. How do they reconcile the differences of opinion while stacking their boards?

In the interest of trying to figure out who we might pick in the mid rounds, see if you can find a d-back that can also be a returner. Ya gotta figure Thompson is at least looking at return ability as a complement to a guy's defensive skill set given our return woes. I would suggest looking for a WR with the same ability, but I think our odds are better for drafting a dback than a WR in the mid rounds. As to how you ascertain if they'd be a good returner by watching the drills, well...I don't really have any advice for that.
--------------
I gather you will try to interview Thompson/McCarthy/others working for the Pack?

I'm with CSS. Give us the scoop on what the scouts and coaches do. Maybe you can get Ted for a couple minutes and cut through the mystique...or add to it.

Hey Aaron, good to hear you're going to the combine. Should be interesting.

Check out

Koa Misi
George Selvie
Brandon Lang
Dexter McCluster
Mike Neal
CJ Spiller
Joique Bell

If you could look at any of these players and how they look. That would be great.

I look forward to hearing about your experience at the combine, and I'm interested in how everyone treats one another; how do the coaches/media/scouts/players interact? Is it friendly? Is it all business? A "behind the scenes" story would be great.

ps. I wouldn't ask McCarthy if he's going to lay an egg in any games next year.

See if C.J. Spiller, Jahvid Best, or Dexter McCluster would look the best for the "Wild Pack"

Think that'll stick?

---Find out TT's height requirements for CB. (I'm tired of seeing mock drafts project TT taking 5'9" CB's Javier Arenas or Syd'Quan Thompson---maybe they think he's TT's cousin).
Using it find us CB's projected in rounds 2-4 that also have ball skills. Al Harris et al have shown straight line speed isn't crucial. I'm more convinced than ever the importance to find and react to the ball in flight.
---Find playmakers. A strength of Ron Wolf was to find difference makers regardless of the position they played.
------Find out what "Trade Value Charts" TT uses. The charts I've used has TT for the most part getting roughly equal value when trading down but overpaying when he trades up.
---Reminder Besides the CB height issue don't forget TT's other wants: football player over athlete, good character or locker room guy over thug w/ talent.

Aaron, the only input I have to offer is that I think you should use this opportunity to rub elbows with the media and scouts from across the different NFL franchise markets and make yourself acquainted with as many as you can. It's always great when you guys have beat writers, etc, from other teams on Transplants Live- I love the insights they provide not only into the intricacies of their their team and fans mindset, but also on how the Packers are perceived by unbiased outsiders.
.
I would imagine that having a media pass to the combine will infuse you with some extra legitimacy, and hopefully open the doors to making some new, interesting contacts who may one day grace Cheesehead TV with some insights.
.
Don't get so caught up in digging up the dirt that you forget to enjoy the experience! Have a blast!

LEARN. LEARN. LEARN. LEARN. LEARN. LEARN.
_
Learn how the media goes about their business there.
-
Learn about how players go about their business there.
_
Learn about how the NFL executives go about their business there.
_
Learn about how the coaches go about their business there.
_
Find out all the rules they put on media & use them to fullest.
_
MOST IMPORTANTLY! Act like you belong there. Act like a professional. This is a first impression that can catapult your site big time. Show them why you belong there & they will send you back every year from here on out.
_
Don't act like a deer in headlights. Save the Christmas day joy for when you get back to your hotel room when nobody, but your family is around.
_
I really don't have any players for you to specifically look at other then...Safeties Chad Jones & Taylor Mays. They are similar in size & athletic ability. Watch there hips in passing drills. Closing speed to the ball after redirection, etc... I want to know what the difference is between them other than, one gets all the pub & the other doesn't.
_
Try as hard as possible to get in good with any Packer representative. It can go along way if you make the right impression. I know that Joe Whitt Jr & Shawn Slocum will be there, but I'm not sure how much access you will be able to get to them as they will be working drills. Keep an eye on Sam Seale & Alonzo Highsmith. ALWAYS look for Ted Thompson. He is the goldmine there if you can get him even for just one question. Prepare yourself that you WILL have a chance at all those Packer reps, so make sure you have proper questions for each persons specific job. You never know what can happen so prepare yourself for everything possible that comes to your mind. PACKER INTERVIEWS IMO SHOULD BE YOUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY.
_
Last... Enjoy it. Take it in. I think I speak for pretty much every Packer fan that comes to this site & you're embarking on a dream that I think we all wish we could do, so just make sure you represent Packer World to the fullest & best you can. You're going to watch some possible future hall of famers at the VERY beginning of their careers, while you can't become a hall of famer you are sort of starting off on your own new career. ENJOY!

Aaron,
In my earlier post I refrained to ask about certain players but I realized " I gots ta know" about some of them.
---TE Jimmy Graham projected 3rd round. Is he a legit NFL TE? If so, at 6'7" he and Finley would be a red zone nightmare in the pass game and help the run game.
---Check out Jacoby Ford and Trindon Holliday---both speed demons that would improve vertical passing game and KR.
---LOLB, who best complements Matthews after round one? Misi? Worilds?

Seriously, I'd love for TT to snag the brainiac in round 2 or 3, as I think he'd fit in well with our group of cerebral DBs. He could learn the entire defense in a 1/2 day. I just hope he's still got some juice in those legs after the year off!
