Surviving Sunday: Packers news, notes and links for the football deprived

In an interview with Sports Illustrated this week, Brett Favre revealed that Ted Thompson sent congratulatory text messages after Favre and the Minnesota Vikings beat the Green Bay Packers twice in 2009. One text read, "Great job." The other, "You played outstanding."

If I were in Thompson's shoes, I probably would have also sent Favre a couple of texts. One would have said "F." Another "U."

I don't have nearly the number of classy bones in my body that Thompson has. The part of my brain that controls how I feel about the Packers was operating on maximum overdrive after Favre beat the Packers twice. Put Favre's cell number in my hands and the ability to send him texts, what I would have sent the 'Ol Gunslinger may have resulted in a knock on my door from the federal authorities.

But let's assume I had my wits about me after those two losses. Then let's pretend I somehow managed to aquire Favre's cell number. What would I have sent him?

After the loss at the Metrodome, I probably would have asked Favre if Dom Capers' defensive calls were really as bad as Charles Woodson said they were in the postgame. After the defeat at Lambeau, I couldn't help but ask if Favre planned to celebrate the big win with a nice dinner in Green Bay, a quiet night back home at his digs in Minneapolis, or a few tokes off of Percy Harvin's victory pipe.

Hats off to Thompson for demonstrating such class and dignity after those two miserable days in 2009. Not that I would have lost any respect for Thompson if his texts to Favre were expletive-filled and slightly deranged (Lord knows that's what I, and most Packers fans, would have done). But it's probably best that Thompson took the high road.

It made the Packers' Super Bowl victory the following season that much sweeter.

Packers, news, notes and links

  • C'mon Andrew Quarless. There are thousands of square miles in rural Wisconsin where you can fire off guns without any worry about getting arrested. When you're in South Beach at 5:30 a.m., leave the gun at home.
  • Datone Jones will be suspended for the season's first game after violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. Apparently, Jones was cited for marijuanna posession the day after the NFC Championship game.  I'm surprised the entire team wasn't picked up for posession after that debacle. If I was Mike McCarthy, I would have directed my team to smoke anything they can find to try and forget what just happened out there.
  • This is a neat list from old friend of CHTV Brian Carriveau. Over at 24-7 sports, Carriveau ranks the top 10 "traits" of Packers players. No. 3 is Clay Matthews' motor. No word on why Aaron Rodgers' samurai skills were omitted from the list.
  • Do you have your NFL Supplemental mock draft ready? Seven players are eligible for the draft, which is set for Thursday.
  • More off-field issues for Letroy Guion. The defensive lineman is facing a civil suit from a 2013 altercation in the same county that his holding Guion's property from an earlier arrest this offseason.
  • Too many links about Packers players getting in trouble this week. The season can't start soon enough.

Non-Packers links and other nonsense

  • I only get around to reading one or two fiction books a year. I started "Fourth of July Creek" by Smith Henderson the other day and so it's outstanding.
  • If you want to know how Sony got hacked, read this great piece of journalism.
  • Who remembers The Bushwhackers from the late 80s/early 90s era WWF? Well, before they would strut to the ring and lick the heads of fans and opponents as The Bushwhackers, they were known as The Sheepherders and they were just as awesome. Here's a 2 hour, 30 minute podcast about the awesomeness of The Bushwhackers/Sheepherders.

Am I the only one who is starting to be a little concerned about DL depth for the opener vs. Chicago?

I still don't know for certain how the nuts and bolts of those suspensions will work. Will GB get an exemption for Jones and Guion and be able to keep extra DL? That is, can GB wait a week to cut Ringo, Thornton, Pennel and/or Boyd, or do they have to put Jones and Guion on the 53 man roster and leave them inactive for the Chicago opener?

If the former, I'd feel comfortable with Daniels, Raji, and Boyd starting with 2 or 3 of the 4 bubble guys available. If the latter, it depends on which players GB wants to keep. Of course, injuries could wreak havoc to with my comfort level.

Nope.....But I'm concerned about the front seven as a whole and though the DL is taking a hit with one game suspension of Jones and Guion at least for same, other than Matthews and the aged Peppers, the LB squad seems more vulnerable even if the front 3 play average or better.

Week 2 vs Seattle needs to come close to replicating the first half of that NFCC game even if we make the Bears look like they suck still in week 1.

Well, it can be that Andrew gun out his position on the team... We will see...
But I do not understand how you can prove your dominance and masculinity by, first, possession of gun and second, by firing that gun? I thought that shows otherwise...

Let's remember that this is a Sunday without "American" Football, as the USA Women's soccer team plays for the World Cup championship tonight. Hope you'll all be watching...

Someone had mentioned Jermaine Gresham somewhere, I just don't recall who and where. I bring this up because if Gresham is still available Thompson should pickup the phone and call. I have no idea what will happen with Quarless with the NFL or the Packers (Waive Him), but his cap hit for 2015 is $1.75 million. That's not a huge amount of money and perhaps there's a clause that says if you're dumb enough to shoot a gun in public, no money for you Andrew!!

But lets just say the Packers stick with "Q". What's his suspension? If it's more than a game do the Packers REALLY want to proceed into a season with just Rodgers ll, Blackman, Henry, and Perillo? IF Gresham is still available and I think he is, Thompson might want to take a peak at him now. No doubt he'll be signed soon when a team loses a TE in TC. Being a FA at this stage I'd think he'd come at a reasonable price. Might not be a bad idea for Ted to bring him in now.

As embarrassed as I am to admit it, I remember the Bushwackers!!!

I'm all for another TE, but not excited about Gresham. He never came close to his potential in Cincy, and there were reports he didn't really care. Of course, it's hard to reach potential as a TE with the Red Rifle, touch passes aren't his forte.

I really liked the prospects of bringing in a Rob Housler who languished late into FA...a little fragile but good size/speed, and underutilized in Arizona's offensive scheme.

I did to Dobber, he was one I was hoping the Packers might target. I thought I read he had a real issue with Drops though I might be wrong. I like Richard Rodgers, just not the depth behind him or Quarless, especially if he gets 4 games or something along those lines.

Pretty sure Gresham needed surgery. Not sure when he had it, for what, or when he might be available to practice. He is the best FA TE out there, I suspect.

The issue won't be week 1. That's a gimme. The issue will be week 2, even though Seadderal's OL sucks balls. We really don't want Raji, Daniels and a bunch of green players on the field against Lynch and Wilson's athleticism. That said, I still think we beat them.

I'm not used to GB players being in the news for any reason other than greatness. I think I feel just a little bit of empathy for Viking fans now... Wait... What the hell did I just say??

Screw Vikings fans.

It's going to be interesting to see what TT does with Quarless. If he's suspended 8-12 games, it's a no brainier. Cut him. But if it's only 2 or so... It's not like he was fantastic beforehand. Just average at best. And yet, TE is the only position on offense where GB doesn't have at least a red chip player....

That Sony hack story was amazing. Lengthy, but compelling as hell. Thanks for the link!

Adam has a great story like that for us every week. The Atlantic Isis piece a couple of months ago was fantastic, as was the hostage article. What else would we expect from a pro wrestling expert? How does he have the time to read all that stuff while growing all that corn?

I'll try and post more stories like the Sony hack and Isis pieces. Sometimes I wonder if people are as nerdy as me and into that kind of stuff, so to be on the safe side, I just post wrestling or heavy-metal links instead :)
