Surviving Sunday: Packers news, notes and links for the football deprived

It's Thursday night, I've got chemotherapy pumping into my veins as I type this, and I'm watching the republican presidential debate. So far, Donald Trump has made a reference to the size of his penis and Marco Rubio is trying to morph into a slam poetry performer in a last-ditch effort to try and derail the Trump (or Drumpf) train.

I'm not 100 percent sure if I'm watching "Monday Night Raw" or a presidential debate. Either way, Ted Cruz is going to give Trump a Stone Cold Stunner and Rubio will take out that jabroni John Kasich with a People's Elbow before the night is over.

There are a lot of dumb things being said on that stage in Detroit. But politicians -- on both sides of the aisle -- have been saying dumb things since forever. Yeah, Trump has ratcheted up the dumbness to another level, but let's not pretend that politicians saying dumb things is a new thing.

Before you stop reading, this is not going to be a political post. Repeat: THIS IS NOT GOING TO BE A POST ABOUT POLITICS.

I'm simply using all the dumb things I'm hearing in this debate as a segue to lead into the question I want to ask in this post: There are a lot of dumb things said about the Packers, either on social media, in the newspaper or on television. Yours truly has been guilty of saying his share of dumb things about the green and gold on many occasions.

What are the top 3 dumbest things said about the Packers that drive you crazy?

Here are mine:

1. Bench Aaron Rodgers. This one pops up way more often than it should. Yeah, it's a silly thing said by people who should not be taken seriously, but it drives me crazy. No, dummies, just because the Packers don't win every game and Rodgers might be off, it doesn't mean the two-time NFL MVP and Super Bowl winner should be replaced by Matt Flynn, Scott Tolzein or Brett Hundley.

2. Packer people. Whenever a crusty and jaded newspaperman peers down through his nose and accuses Packers fans of believing in the silly "Packer people" trope, I cringe. You know, the notion that the Packers only bring in players that are of impeccable character. Most fans understand that not all of the players wearing green and gold are angels. There's no need to pretend that you're above your readers by clinging to the belief that we still cling to the "Packer People" nonsense.

3. Sit down! Unfortunately, if you've been to a game at Lambeau, you've probably heard this one before. I'm not one of those people who thinks you need to stand for the entire game. The always-standing people are almost as annoying as the refuse-to-stand people. But when the ball is in the air for a potential big play or it's a third-down and the Packers need a stop, you best be on your feet making noise, not yelling at people to sit down.

What'd I miss? What dumb things said about the Packers drive you crazy?

Packers news, notes and links

  • This is the most adorable Packers podcast I've ever heard.
  • Speaking of Packers podcasts (although nowhere near as adorable as the podcast linked to above), PackersTalk.com recently got a new look. Updated look, same great content.
  • Mason Crosby re-signed with the Packers for 4 years and $16 million. It's a great deal because 1) Mason Crosby has developed into a damn good kicker and 2) We get another four years of giving Jersey Al a hard time whenever Crosby nails a big kick.
  • Sounds like James Jones is going to hit the open market. This is why I could never be a NFL general manager. I would get too attached to a player like Jones and just give him a bunch of money to keep him on my team.
  • This is a good quick read from ESPN's Rob Demovsky on how the Packers need to figure out if WR Jeff Janis can "take that next step." With Jordy Nelson coming and Randall Cobb on the roster, the Packers don't need Janis to be the second coming of Jerry Rice. What they need out of him is more consistency and continued ability to take the top off the defense. From the Packers' end, they also need to give Janis the opportunity to be more consistent instead of stashing him on the bench after every route that wasn't run to perfection.
  • Here's a slimmed down Eddie Lacy. Looks like we're about to find out if P90X translates into a big season running the ball during a contract year. I don't care how much Lacy weighs as long as he's still able to truck would-be tacklers.
  • Ravens QB Joe Flacco re-structured his contract and got a $40 million signing bonus. Sheesh, if Rodgers ever re-structures his contract, what kind of signing bonus would he command? $60 million? $70 million? All the millions?

Non-Packers links and other nonsense

  • Folks, the possibility (threat?) that Donald Trump could be our next president is real. To be fair, another way of looking at that map is to say the possibility (threat?) of Hillary Clinton being our next president is real.
  • Ok, sorry. Enough politics. How's this for a find? A crumpled bag in a dilapidated house contained seven century-old baseball cards.
  • This was an interesting column from Richard Deitsch addressing why networks continue trotting out sports personalities that most people on social media can't stand.
  • This section championship boy's basketball game went to four overtimes and featured three buzzer-beating shots, including an 80-foot, full-court heave that sent the game into the fourth overtime. Side note: Waseca is where Matilda the Bulldog was born.
  • Cancer update: Round 3 of chemotherapy took place on Thursday. Here's visual evidence. Also, many people wore blue in my honor on Friday as part of colon cancer awareness day. I never thought I would have so many people thinking about my colon. Thank you.

I feel like I don't even read this column because of football anymore. Praying for ya bud. Having said that on my one beautiful trip to Green Bay for a game I definitely got "old lady telling me to sit down" served. Haha...Thank god free agency is almost here right? I have 2 gree agents in mind and I'd be ecstatic with either. Danny Travathian or Ladarius Green.....Ted ....you can do this!!

The Packers have no depth. Teams in the salary cap era can't put a complete starting line up on the field without holes to fill. Either you're going to be great on offense or defense, which ever you prefer. Pick your poison.
You inspire a lot of people Adam, love your posts.

One of the things that has been said, over and over, to me, that drives me crazy, is that the Packers and their fans are living in the past. Whenever we speak of our 13 World Championships, the tradition of Greatness and the pride we have for the Green and Gold, we are somehow living in the past. This "living in the past" comment always comes from vikings' fans. Can you believe that?

Spot on, it's either Vikings fans or Lions fans which is really funny because they don't even have a past! I'm really looking forward to the draft and the 2nd and 3rd weeks of Free Agency. Thompson won't sign a "Big Name" but he might try and improve either ILB or TE, maybe both. I'd be REALLY happy with one and addressing the other in the draft. I'd prefer he sign a TE and then draft a ILB, OLB, and DL the first 3 rounds in no particular order. Though if Ragland, Lee, Reed, or Billings is sitting there in Rd. 1 I'd be happy with any of them.

Keep up the fight Adam, I look for your weekly progess reports first thing every Sunday. My Prayers are with you.

At least Lions have a history where they won, but it's so long ago nobody remembers. Vikings, only one moment of some success, the Purple People..... but that ended with the biggest flop ever!!! You would think they would just shut up until they actually win something.

Agreed on how annoying the "quit talking about the past" line is. I know I'm biased, but Packers history is fascinating, whether you're a fan or not.

The sad thing is the past is finding it harder to erase the recent past. Having two generational QB ' s since our return to the SB in 96/97 season, we have allowed two old farts to play in 4 SB's and win 3 of them while both of our guys, one then and one now in their prime years. The past was easier to talk about in the present but under present outcomes, the sting it bestowed on others is wearing thin

Adam,

You're still in my prayers.

Discussing the colon cancer and treatment will increase awareness of the unpleasant screening process that most all of us men detest, but should endure.

Thank you.

A guy I hunt with went in for a colonoscopy not long after I got diagnosed. They found several pre-cancerous pollups that he got removed. If he had waited......who knows what those could have turned into?

Granted, he's twice my age. But the moral of the story is to stay on top of your health, no matter what.

Adam, Thanks for the reminder. Since my surgery to remove a kidney tumor last fall , I have been putting it off and I should know better. Just had my 6 month follow up MRI and all is good. Hoping the same for you. For others please stay on top of your health. I was lucky because they discovered the tumor when I had a routine CAT scan done And that was only because my wife insisted I not treat a bout with the flu casually. If I did not go to the ER, I would never had known.

Adam,

To say the column is "bullshit" hits a sore spot with most of us. I don't post on facebook, twitter, or other such social media and prefer my group of closer friends to discuss personal, political, etc type items with.

I do, however, enjoy your personal touches on this website and hope you don't change anything. Sometime when I fly back for a game, I will try to touch base with you ahead of time and perhaps we can meet in person. I do enjoy hearing those strong Midwestern accents that I used to routinely hear at school (U. of Wisconsin/Madison).

I don't appreciate posters who are prone to "smart ass" comments, like the couple I read in this thread. I have found that some people will speak boldly when they hide behind a computer screen.

I'm not a fan of how we constantly prop ourselves up as some sort of gold standard of NFL fandom. All fanbases have good and bad fans, there's no reason we need to stick up our noses at other fanbases. It's pretty obnoxious.

I have no problem propping ourselves up as superior fans. But that's probably because I've been to a few Vikings games and have seen the bottom of the barrel in the fan category.

Is it really fair to judge an entire fanbase based on a few games and selecting a handful of people who are presumably drunk? I've also been to a Packer game where a grown man booed a child in a Favre jersey. Let's also not forget how after particularly bad Packer losses, the amount of domestic abuse in Green Bay increases. Every team has it's good and bad apples.

You're still in my prayers, Adam.

Regarding Jeff Janis, in addition to route running, he needs to figure out how to get separation at the line of scrimmage. That's what really messes him up because before he even tries to run a route.

Thanks.

That's a good point. It's easy for people like me to throw out the "route running" line, but often the route can be won or lost before it even starts.

Notice how Jordy does it, he throws his arms up and gets that separation, he has the speed but gets the first jump.

Janis not being able to get off the line in press coverage makes no sense to me. He is probably one of the more gifted athletes in the NFL as strange as the sounds! Track star..check. Size & strength..check. Vertical jump...check. What's the problem? I think it's mental with him, it must be?! No way a guy with those metrics shouldn't be able to get into his routes! I think he needs a dedicated position coach to drill down on his technique. Perhaps Paul Ott Carruth or someone else with extensive knowledge of the NFL from a coaching perspective can shed some light on this? In fairness, Nelson is almost a Janis clone( or vice versa) , and he's never been great at beating press either. I played ball and know that much of it is a very quick first step. I just don't see how guys this athletic can't seem to get this down? I do think Janis will continue to emerge and become a good player. He came from a small school where he could just run by everyone. Not so easy in the NFL. Go Pack! I'm pulling for you Adam. Keep the faith!

Sorry about your cancer but I do not go to Packer sites for political comments. There are numerous Packer sites which are very good and will no longer be wasting my time on this one. Politics have divided our nation and want no part in it dividing the Packer Nation. I wish you all well but will be deleting this account and staying with the other Packer sites

On the front of "Stuff that drives you crazy

I can't stand hearing people (usually outsiders or morons) complain that "fans at Lambeau field aren't energetic enough."

Almost every time I've heard this complaint, question the person and you quickly realize their complaint is based around the fact that Packers fans in Lambeau aren't yelling, screaming, hollering, and jumping around when Aaron Rodgers and the Offense are on the field, particularly on a key 3rd down attempt. They just don't understand that Packers fans at Lambeau understand that we need to allow the Offense to communicate clearly and do their thing at the LOS.
