Sunday Night Practice

Sunday Night Practice

Here's what I saw:

  • The OLBs and TEs went one-on-one in a blocking drill. Before it began, an assistant coach held a real Championship Belt over his head, which got some of the players fired up. There were a couple big time collisions, most notably Zombo getting practically decleated by Donald Lee, who was was awarded the belt at the end of the drill.
  • Jordy Nelson is, so far, worlds ahead of James Jones in regards to not only his connection with Rodgers but his entire presence at practice. Nelson looks alert and eager while Jones looks sullen and withdrawn. The very last play of 11 on 11, Jones got behind the defense for what would have been a huge touchdown play, only to drop a perfectly thrown pass from Rodgers. To make matters worse, it was the same kind of play Rodgers and Nelson have hit 4 or 5 times already.
  • At one point early on in team period, one of the offensive linemen (couldn't tell who) jumped early. McCarthy, who hasn't done much if any yelling, waited a beat and then laid into the offense "Lets do it again! Without the fucking penalty!" McCarthy definitely seems to be focused on the penalty issue.
  • I don't know much, but I know that both of these punters are a vast improvement over Kapinos.
  • Mason Crosby missed not one, not two, but three attempts, two of them from the right hashmark. Crosby appologists point to yet another new holder. I point to two seasons, two offseasons, and all the same problems keep popping up. How long do the holder-excuses hold water?
  • Morgan Burnett is the real deal if, and its a big 'if', he can tackle in a game. Its one thing to hit and tackle a guy in the controlled environment of a drill. Its quite another to do it live in a game. Everything else with Burnett is solid if not very good. His ball skills are excellent. His range is fantastic. Now I just need to see him in a game with live tackling. If he passes that test, ladies and gentlemen, he is the real deal.
  • With Clifton getting rest in the morning, Breno Giacommini and T.J. Lang are splitting reps at RT. The first two practices, shockingly, Breno was by far the better performer. But last night the world started to get back to normal. Good possibility Lang is just rusty from so much time off after his surgery. In a one on one blocking drill vs. the OLBs, Brady Poppinga absolutely destroyed Breno while Lang stoned Clay Matthews. Then, in teams, Zombo flew by Breno like he was standing still.
  • Jermichael Finley almost broke Derrick Martin's ankles, TWICE, with moves that made the safety look foolish in a one on one drill.
  • Greg Bedard came and sat in the stands with Brian and I for the second half of practice. There goes the neighborhood.

thanks for the update

if I were to get at the field at 1230 for a 2 pm practice, think I would be stuck waiting in a huge line?

THANK YOU for calling out the Crosby apologists. I took a little grief last night on the blog for railing on him, people wanted to say "it's only the second practice". Gimme a break, he's not trying to learn a scheme, or read a defense/offense... he's running out and kicking a ball, something he's been working on for YEARS. Get it right or get out of town.

I went to that night practice and YES Finley looked swift like a gazelle.
The crowd got really excited when he jooked Martin the first time (Martin actually gave J-Fin a celebratory bump after that one) but after the second time (same exact move) the crowd EXPLODED into cheers....Martin didn't seem so excited by that one.

also, the battle between the OLB's and the TE's was EPIC...Coach Williams brought out a WWF belt and presented it to the winners....D.LEE was victorious and Coach McCarthy personally handed it to him with a big smile on his face...truly a highlight!!!

I love this team!

Am I the only one happy to see MM so riled up and angry with mistakes?

To me he's sending the message that we're not a young, up-and-coming team anymore, and there's no more excuses for rookie mistakes.
Superbowl or die.

I'm loving the Morgan Burnett updates more and more after each passing day. I think we definitely got a steal with this kid. If Bigby does stay healthy enough for the season, then I wonder how Capers would use both SS's. Would he utilize Burnett while Bigby stays on the bench or find some way to incorporate a 3 safety set with Collins-Bigby-Burnett?

I thought the same thing, and threw out the possibility of putting Bigby in on a psycho package or something as a covering LB. He's a big hitter and might cover better than some LBs...just a thought...
