Simpkins Elevated to 53; Williams Signed To Practice Squad
Safety Morgan Burnett was placed on injured reserve, linebacker Maurice Simpkins was signed to the 53-man roster and linebacker Johnny Williams was added to the practice squad.
The Packers announced several roster moves on Thursday.
Practice squad player and first-year linebacker Maurice Simpkins, a former Indoor Football League player with the Green Bay Blizzard, has been elevated to the 53-man roster.
Simpkins replaces rookie safety Morgan Burnett who was placed on season-ending injured reserve. Burnett was injured during the Week 4 win against the Detroit Lions.
Replacing Simpkins on the practice squad is another linebacker, Johnny Williams, a first-year player out of the University of Kentucky.
Williams was most recently with the Denver Broncos during the preseason this year. He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent originally signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He spent some time on the practice squad of the Pittsburgh Steelers late in 2009.
The newest practice squad addition will wear no. 48.

I disagree with the scores. Miami, Viks, and Washington haven't proved they can score. I think only Washington had one high scoring game with the Texans.

I'm guessing they intend on primarily using him in Bishop's former Special Teams role since Bishop will be taking so many snaps on defense. How did Simpkins look on ST during pre-season? Sound?

Simpkins is a guy I had my eye on throughout training camp and the preseason. Hes a player, I thought he played well on STs coverage and defense when he got the chance.
Im excited to see what he can do now that he maybe knows the defense a little better and doesn't have think as much.
If Hawk or Bishop struggles I wouldn't hesitate to play this guy. Who knows maybe Capers will find a package for him to play in regardless.

Speaking of linebackers, please let me comment on Hawk (again).
Let's get in the way-back machine, and go to the Chicago game -- the play where Hester scores. Hawk is simply wiped out. He's jogging downfield, greasy/stringy hair flowing -- not paying any attention. And he gets WAYLAID. Clock cleaned. Knocked-on-his-ass. No wonder we had a "gap control" problem there (but yes! there were more).
Also of note, the new wunderkind TE (Quarless) gets *wrist* blocked, and moved totally out of the play (where he was close enough to fall down and have that look like an attempted tackle). I had to look at that several times and it appeared to be only an arm-bar, not much more than a finger wag, and he's

PLAY.
No big surprise that playing 9 on 11 -- with one being Hester -- that they scored.
Quarless may have to go on IR -- to get his bunched-panties removed.
