Scouting Combine: Day One

Aaron checks in from Indianapolis with some brief notes about what NFL general managers and coaches were talking about today.

Hello from Lucas Oil Stadium, otherwise known as the House That Peyton Built That He Will Soon Longer Be Welcomed In.

Yes, Manning hung over much of the days proceedings today, with nearly every general manager and coach being asked about him. Rex Ryan talked about not talking about him. Joe Philbin "no commented" about him. Ken Wisenhunt tried to avoid talking about it - and failed. Add to this the fact that nearly every wall has some kind of picture of Manning on it and you simply can not escape the man.

In other proceedings, Seattle general manager John Schneider talked about Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill and how he liked the fact he is a "football player" in reference to the fact that Tannehill played receiver for A&M and some defense when he was in high school. He indicated he preferred this type of QB instead of one who has been incubated in quarterback schools and camps all their lives - then he made a joke about Aaron Popkey, who was a high school quarterback in the Green Bay area growing up, saying he would never draft him. You probably had to be there, but it was hilarious.

Elsewhere, every GM and head coach seems to think that having a full offseason will be a magic elixir that cures all that ailed under-performing players in 2011. Seriously, every GM and coach made a point of saying "Well, now that he'll have a full offseason..." when asked about a disappointing player. While I think a full offseason will undoubtedly pay dividends for some guys, I think there are going to be some disappointed front offices as well.

As you're probably aware, tomorrow is the big day at the Combine for Packers fans as both Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy are set to speak. Be sure to check back throughout the day for all the latest from the Combine.

...the House That Peyton Built That He Will Soon Longer Be Welcomed In.

Shouldn't there be a "No" in there somewhere?

That said, it's a great notion, but about as awkward a phrasing as Peyton's seemingly-inevitable departure. :-, Maybe "… And From Which He'll Soon Be Exiled"?

Sounds like Day One gets off to a kind of slow start down there regarding the football.

But I imagine it is one the biggest drinking nights for that same reason... What do people drink over there anyway? Does Indiana have a favorite state brewery?

Three Floyds - that's right. I haven't had that since my college days. Love the Robert the Bruce Scotch Ale.

Nagler, you've got to grab one of those if you haven't yet!
