Roster Size Increases from 80 to 90

The NFL has increased their offseason roster size from 80 to 90 players, according to Greg Aiello, a public relations representative for the NFL.

The regular season roster will remain at 53 players.

Aiello also that the roster cutdown date from 90 to 75 players will occur after the third week of the preseason.

The Packers currently have 65 players on their roster with the subtraction of tackle Chad Clifton and the addition of linebacker Erik Walden who re-signed with Green Bay on Monday.

That means the Packers can add up to 25 new players via the NFL Draft, undrafted rookies and any other free agent signings.

The Packers have 12 draft choices in the NFL Draft beginning on Thursday, although they may not end up with that number after trades.

If past history is any indication, the Packers will bring their roster up to within a few players of the limit leaving open a few roster spots in order to sign a handful of undrafted free agents until after they've tried out with the team at rookie orientation camp following the Draft.

It is not required the Packers or any team fill the maximum 90 players the roster. Only the players with the top 51 salaries count against the salary cap.

Without increasing the number of spots for the regular roster, I'm not sure how much this really gains anyone. Just more bodies for the coaching staff to try to give reps to develop and and to evaluate with less time to do it in. Quit dinking around NFL, and expand the real rosters.
