You should let your boys with the AP know that Woodson can't cover a lick anymore, they obviously didn't get the memo. And they obviously wouldn't select a CB solely on takeaways. 8-)

And I know you were expecting that snarky response. I don't disappoint!

woodson?
really?

how can the #2 corner on a defense that gave up the most passing yards IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL be a first team all - pro?

must be a lean year for corners.

By that reasoning, Marshall Newhouse should be an All-Pro. After all, he was the left tackle on an offense that scored the second most points IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL.

Granted - I'm just a casual observer, and can at times prove to be both overly emotional and reactionary, but here's what i see...

-Tramon covering the other team's #1 wr .
-Woodson falling down quite often.
-Woodson using his veteran knowledge and 'savvy' to make up for his eroded physical skills.
-Occasional big plays against slot receivers and tight ends.

I love woodson... LOVE HIM... But I'm not blinded by that love.

You watch/break down A LOT more football than I do (not difficult because I NEVER break down anything). If you can honestly tell me that you think Woodson was one of the top 2 corners in the nfl this season, I will accept it as being so.

I don't actually. But I understand why people would vote him in. He tied for the league lead in INTs and does lots of things that other corners simply aren't asked to do, such as rushing the passer, blowing up running plays, ect. He's a consummate pro and yes, this may be a bit of a Life Time Achievement award at this point. He can't run as well as he used to and quicker, younger guys give him fits.

That said, he is still the key for everything Capers wants to do on defense and relishes having that role. That zeal shows up on Sundays and people (ie voters) respond to it.

I posted on Jersey Al's site/ allgreenbaypackers.com that I have a real issue with Woodson making the AP All pro team as a CB because, while I think wood is a great defensive asset to the Packers, he's not really playing a traditional CB role.

I stated that calling Woodson a CB at this point in his career is like calling Tim Tebow a QB.. Tebow is listed as a QB, but he plays more like a RB.

Well, Woodson is listed as a QB, but he plays more like an in the box safety or LB.

Too many other CB's in the league with great coverage skills who actually play the traditional position to take the spot away from them and give it to Woodson.. But i do think Charles Woodson deserves recognition of some sort as a defensive playmaker. Guess you can't have it both ways.

Edit for stupidness:

"Woodson is listed as a QB"

=

"Woodson is listed as a CB"

doh.

5 Linebackers? really? do they always name that many? And why 2 RBs when you only have 3 WRs?

The voting was 47 1/2 to Rodgers versus 2 1/2 for Brees.

I fully expect the MVP voting to go something like this.

Would say that Woodson made it on name recognition but then again I can't honestly find another CB to replace him. There're CBs that cover better than him, but they're not nearly as physical, and don't make many plays.

There isn't a lot out there, not this year. Maybe a case for Tillman, but I can't do it.

Yeah, Wood probably lost a step and is in no way shape or form a classic 'shut down corner', but I doubt he got very many votes for his coverage skills. The vast majority of players learn their position and play it the way it was taught, the way it was always played. Some of them play so well they earn honors for it. But precious few can create and innovate to the extent that they change the game and change the way future players play their position. Wood is that guy, and the voters who are paying attention have rewarded him for it.

It's a cliche, but it fits. Are there more than a handful of corners that have played the position with as much physicality? Provided as much blitz and run support? As the game evolves to more and more of a passing league, how do defenses adapt? Time will tell, but I think we could easily see more CW types working QB pressure and coverage near line of scrimmage from the CB position, with help coming in from up top to handle deeper coverage. Woodson set the example, and if others follow, then yeah, he changed the game. All Pro? He might be All Time.

i would agree with 'all-time' for A CAREER before i would agree with 'all-pro' for THIS SEASON.

he got this one on rep and name recognition.

Woodson didn't change the game. He just went back to the way a guy played it 40 years earlier.

Thanks for the link - school is in session. That has to be of the all-time great nick-names, too. Seems he was a CB, but played more like a safety. Six time All Pro. Hmmm...Maybe a CB can play that way and still make All Pro...

I see a lot of talk here about Woodson's selection, but what I'm wondering, myself, is if Rodgers' selection is a good sign for him to take away the MVP award. Any thoughts?
