Rodgers Sets Record For Highest Passer Rating In NFL History

Aaron Rodgers has passed Philip Rivers for the highest passer rating behind the strength of his performance on Sunday against the New York Giants.

Following Sunday's Week 16 win over the New York Giants, quarterback Aaron Rodgers has worked his way into NFL record books.

Rodgers now has a career 98.6 passer rating, which ranks first in NFL history among quarterbacks with at least 1,500 attempts.

Coming into Week 16, Rodgers ranked second with a rating of 97.6 behind Philip Rivers of the San Diego Chargers who had a rating of 97.8.

But behind the strength of a performance in which the Packers quarterback completed 25 of 37 passes for 404 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions, Rodgers was able to pass Rivers.

Rivers completed 27 out of 40 passes for 256 yards with one touchdown and one interception in a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, which lowered his career passer rating to 97.5.

Steve Young and Tony Romo rank third and fourth respectively on the all-time list. Tom Brady ranks fifth and improved his passer rating with a good performance this past Sunday, but not good enough to pass anybody.

While this is great. The biggest problem with it is that it's really early in Rodgers career. And one game can still have a relatively large impact. Whereas one game in Favre's career, or even a great season like last year, is going to have a smaller impact.

I certainly hope he keeps it up. But its still a bit early to tell.

A win Sunday, and a few away wins in the playoffs, will direct the discussion to whether he is 'great'.

whoop de do! That's great and all, but I'll take a few playoff wins over some arbitrary rating any day of the week. Passer rating is the second most confusing and meaningless stat in all of sports, right behind slugging percentage in baseball...

Meaningless? I'll take the highest rated of all time vs. the lowest.

I may want to take that back. The lowest ever was Frank Tripucka, yet the Denver Broncos retired his number.

Slugging % isn't that hard to figure out and if you put it together with OnBase% it becomes a very showing stat

Rodgers has a monkey on his back placed there by some over expectant fans earlier and/or by the entire(almost)sports media analyst world.

A victory Sunday may get partial relief and a second victory(playoff) may shed even more.He may even be considered more closer to the reigning royalty of Brady,Manning,Brees with this accomplishment, when factoring in how far he came with the plague of misfortune that befell the Packers this season.

However,it would not be this monkey I will worry about going forward but the one that Rodgers may place on his own back if he cannot win these games, either by his fault or whoever's fault.

Rodgers may become the Green Bay Packers version of Atlas(re-Favre),and that can't ever be good for anyone again.

Stats and records will always be around and dictate the argument in the sports world. We had a QB who owns many, many stats and records and yet we lag in the most important... Super Bowl wins.

Aaron(Rodgers not Nagler),please ignore the stats and records of those who mostly win nothing, exceptions there are a couple, and become a part of the elite and conquer not stats and records but win the Crowns of Champions.

What's stupid about the NFL is how people tend to ignore championships won before the 60's. It pissed me off so much after the Steelers won their sixth Super Bowl and everyone started saying they were the best franchise of them all. That my friends, was a load of shit. The Steelers, and many of the other teams that have now become successful during the "Super Bowl" era have either been around since almost as long as the Pack (they were founded in 1933) or were instituted relatively recently and lack the heritage and tradition of Green Bay. The Steelers were around long enough to win championships in that era (jeez even the Lions had a mini-dynasty in the 50's) but the only reason that they didn't succeed was because of they sucked.
To put it into perspective think of the NHL. For years the league was comprised of the "original six" teams which, for over two decades, comprised the league who between themselves fought for the right to hoist the Stanley Cup during this time. Yet just because the league was just a fraction of the size it is now (think pre-merger NFL) it doesn't mean those championships get negated just because nobody else decided to organize a successful team during those years. The fact of the matter is that for the Packers, the Giants, the Bears, and yes, even the Lions, to get their achievements ignored just because their long-tenured, it's absolutely ridiculous. Perhaps someday a Steelers fan will realize that 12 championships means a little more than 6.

Sorry it was somewhat random but its been bugging me for a long time and when you mentioned SuperBowl Championships as a category that we are lagging behind I thought I would speak up.

I know all about the Championships that are not called Super Bowl and although it may be wrong for those to be ignored, but it is what it is and its these RINGS that dictate who leads in the Championships.
Too many fans may think that's when football started and even the media never brings them into the COUNT when speaking of Championships.
It may piss YOU off but the days of yore in football means little in the SUPERBOWL ERA,sorry even though I know as you.

One might expect Rodgers to take a dip against the Bears D, but they gave up a TON of points against Mark Sanchez and the play-action. Rodgers was 11 for 12 and had a perfect rating in play action. We could see another game like last week.

Yes. Football is like bowling and golf. It's all one mans' fault A-Rod....not a defense that gave up 45 in a playoff game, or fate that wiped out six starters, or a kicker that hits an upright, or a rookie linebacker that lines up over the center on a punt, or 18 penalties, or a dropped TD that goes for an interception, or a 70 kickoff return by a lineman... Until Rogers cleans up those things....he's just the highest rated QB of all time...Damn him!

This was a response to the Lynn Dickey fan. 70.9 QB Rating and one playoff victory.

It was a different era and a non WC offense then. Never-the-less, the record for most passing yards per regular season, and until the AZ game, game passing yards, plus the fact that AR's 404 game yards hit the 400 mark not done since 1980. Records even Favre amazingly didn't break. Those point a minute offenses were fun to watch.

I don't care what his passer rating is...if we beat the Bears on back-to-back weeks, including a playoff win, Rodgers should be elevated to some sort of cult-hero status around here even if he never throws another pass. That would be pretty damn cool.

And another thing...I didn't think it was FATE that took out six starters. I thought it was improper joint alignment. This blog does get confusing every now and then.

It is still an achievement and indicates something special going on with the offense. Yes, we want the wins. But why not enjoy the statistic for what it is. Congrats to AR.

Ditto. Never understood why, even with a tidbit of good news, some Packer fans can't get out of whine mode.

Does anyone know where I can see a replay of the Giants game? I had to work and it sounds like a fun game to watch even knowing the outcome.

LOL yeah A-Rod. Wth is he doing during the week? He should be teaching human physiology too otherwise he always "cannot win these games, either by his fault or whoever’s fault".

Okay,so be sure to keep your ears open when and if,I hope not,the Packers lose either of these games to Chicago, listen to how Aaron Rodgers is casted in the media.
The QB who cannot win the needed game, not the team that couldn't.Hence the monkey grows by the media and possibly more so from himself.
But I'm sure the little tidbits of stats will suffice.

So what are we all supposed to do? Just ignore every positive statistic? Should we all scream at its meaninglessness because there are other things Rodgers has not done?

It is what it is, as they say. It's not a Super Bowl ring, nor is it a win in the playoffs. I think we are all quite aware of the fact that the Packers haven't won a playoff game with Rodgers as QB. But that simple fact doesn't mean we should spit at everything else that places Rodgers among the leaders of the league.
