Rodgers Historically Thrives Indoors as Packers Prepare for Georgia Dome

A miraculous comeback, a 61-yard heave and a shortness of breath in Ford Field marked the last time Aaron Rodgers played in a dome environment prior to 2016.

It was dubbed the "Hail Mary Game" and would send tight end Richard Rodgers into Packers lore as somewhat of a folk hero. Good things happen for (Aaron) Rodgers and the Packers when they're playing in a dome, as do they for most quarterbacks.

There's a nonexistent natural weather factor, kicking is a breeze (or lack thereof) and the artificial turf can sometimes benefit the players on the field. Crowd noise, however, can be an obstacle that sways in favor of the home team.

The Packers will be playing in Atlanta, which houses the home Falcons team whose organization was fined $350,000 and had to forfeit their fifth-round selection in the 2016 NFL Draft for pumping in fake crowd noise. An embarrassing unfolding of events, to say the least. Nevertheless, it's safe to assume the Packers won't have to worry about an extra octave of screaming in the Georgia Dome.

It tells a different story than the first indoor game the Packers played this year in Minnesota. The Vikings and their historically dominant defense christened the opening of their new home, U.S. Bank Stadium, with a 17-14 win over the visiting Packers and made Rodgers look pedestrian. That's being generous.

Yeah. That crowd noise was probably real. 100 percent real.

Going into Atlanta brings a series of challenges in its own regard. While the Packers will be down three of their top cornerbacks and possibly one of their more efficient edge-rushers in Clay Matthews, they'll be up against Julio Jones. Otherwise known as the NFL's leader in receiving yards.

The Falcons do possess one of the league's youngest linebacker corps, providing a target zone in the middle of the field for Rodgers and company. They've allowed 690 yards over the middle of the field through their first seven games, and while that's a hot spot, the flats and out-routes may be money for the Packers.

Opposing quarterbacks have completed 71 percent of their passes for 1,159 yards when directing their aerial attack towards the right and left sides of the field. Providing a tough outlet for the Falcons' coverage linebackers to keep up in traffic and pursue the ball. If the Packers were to carry over the quick-passing attack similar to what was seen against the Bears last Thursday night, Rodgers and company can be in for a big outing. A big outing that may be a necessity moving forward to jumpstart the offense for the long haul.

Being encased in a dome won't help the Falcons against Rodgers, either. In his career, Rodgers has tossed 40 touchdowns to 10 interceptions for a 109.4 rating when playing in a dome. On the contrary, with Rodgers under center, the Packers are 11-9 in these conditions. A further testament that "quarterback wins" is a mere figment of the casual fan's imagination.

To add onto the flipside of those numbers, his last seven games in a dome have culminated in a 4-3 record, 15 touchdowns and four interceptions - a similar stat-line to what Rodgers currently has in 2016, but with one more game played. By his standards, far from adequate.

The Packers, in present day, have been practicing indoors to prepare for the field surfaces in Atlanta, but not by choice.

"The idea is for us to be out (practicing) on the grass," head coach Mike McCarthy answered to the questionnaires on Friday. "If the weather was better this week, we would've practiced Wednesday and Thursday on the grass and just saved the field turf work for Saturday."

Since taking over as the team's head coach, McCarthy retains a 16-10 record in domed stadiums.

"The game of football was meant to be played on grass, and frankly, it's a better training environment and landscape for the health of your football team."

Domes suck. Real football is played outdoors on grass. The end.

I hate agreeing with cow....But with our 36 injuries and AR playing like Fitzpatrick most games this one might get ugly.

Rodgers has one less target...

"ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter says Randall Cobb is not expected to play Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons due to a hamstring injury."

Oh yippee. No word on Lang yet. But Monty expected to play with illness. See how effective he is with being sick all week with little practice.

I think Lang will play...don't know what that's based on aside from his gutting out the second half last week.

My prediction is we see a lot of #87 in the slot today with Adams and *ulp* Janis on the outside. Maybe now we know the full story on the Packers WR moves this week...

I just saw it on NFL channel, Cobb is OUT! Injuries are gutting that team. Correction Cobb is questionable.

I've been thinking the same thing......Time for Allison, at least he seemed to run the correct routes and has good hands

just like r. rodgers..............
and just like abby (pretty sad we waived him, wish he would picked up by a good team that knows how to use him) , the preseason mvp......but that doesnt mean he get any balls throwin his way
but your right he runs better routes than adams and got better hands than davis.
geronimo should be a big red zone target, if he makes it on the field in that situation and if he got the trust.......

Really? I don't know what planet the two of you've been on but as little of Allison anyone has seen its rather premature for you to make that assessment of him.

sometimes is fun to be premature. other than that he showed a lot in preseason.
But former fitness coaches know that probably better, like everything else.

Well let's see, Green Bay is down to their #4,5, and 6th CBs. Their main pass rusher is out. Their main RB is a WR, and their #2 WR is out along with their #1 TE.

I have no idea how good this team can be, but if they win today....it will jump start their season. Confidence is something they have have lost and could regain by the end of the day.

They will have to use all of their WR weapons (>40 passes again) and play keep away from the Falcons. Matthews missing is bad, but maybe will have the minimum impact due to Perry and Jones.

My call is that Rodgers will continue to struggle, thus making the D spend far too much time on the field, and the birds will run away with it in the second half. The stats will show Rodgers having at least 3 turn-overs and a QB rating of below 75. The good news is it may force MM to get on Rodgers instead of making excuses for him. The rest of the team must hate that!!!

How do the Packers get 10 days rest and come out less healthy than they were right after the Bears game? MM's practices must be ferocious....or something is hinky with that GB water.

Perhaps it's psychological. ...feigning injury to cover up bad play or save from one's present/future embarrassment. : )

This might be worse than last year, is that possible. This team is hurt all the time, its like we have the hurt bug and catch it yearly.

True, but go back over the last few games...

The Giants were down half their secondary and a couple OL.
The Bears were down a starting QB and half their secondary...then lost their backup QB who was playing better than their starter.

The Doughboys and the Falcons are both pretty healthy (and playing well, BTW), but I would argue that there are plenty of other teams out there who are sucking wind on the injury front, too.

True, other teams have their share of injuries it's just that fans tend to notice it more with their own teams.

You are absolutely right, Dobber, and other teams seem to adjust a lot better than the Pack. We go in to the last game with one healthy running back. Many of the other teams don't seem to miss a beat regardless of the injuries.

Geez, injuries ruining another season! Maybe the Packers should move their home games to the Mayo Clinic.

If the Packers had their offense from two years ago, I'd say they'd have a decent chance today. With a patched up secondary and the Packs dink and dunk attack I don't see GB scoring enough to keep up.

Plus, to add to the overall injury angst, I noticed ARod favoring his lower leg for a brief time against the Bears. Very similar to the last time he had the calf injury. I'm predicting, on a nondescript running play ARod will come up lame in the next few games. You heard it here first.

with cobb and ty out and Matthews questionable. not having are starting corners. this game will go one of two ways. either Adams Nelson and Rodgers will play a great game or the packers will get stomped on. I got faith in my team. They have done some amazing things with put there starters and that is what I am looking for today. if it goes the other way then o well. ill still.bleed green and yellow for live.....#gopackgo
