Playcalling and Relationship

Not a whole lot I can add to the subject here, but I didn't want any more time to go by without pointing out this excellent piece by Tom Pelissero over at the Green Bay Press Gazette about playcalling. Tom got some great quotes from both McCarthy and Wisenhunt in advance of last Sunday's game. One of my faves from McCarthy:

People say, ‘Oh, the quarterback and I aren’t on the same page'...Your relationship in the selling, in the growing of your preparation as far as getting things installed, taught, prepared are 10 times more important of what you call in the game, because if that isn’t connected, your chances for success are going down.

Now, obviously that's a bit garbled from the standpoint of the English language - but it is a great example of a football coach grappling with explaining the importance of the relationship between McCarthy and Rodgers. On a day where Ron Turner, who Jay Cutler reportedly never warmed up to,  was fired in Chicago, these words have extra resonance.

McCarthy cracks me up. He tries to sound so intelligent by getting so wordy that he gets his tongue all tied up. I think he needs a translator. He's right, though he could have just said, "Yes, it's one of the most important aspects of play calling and game preparation to have open communication with your QB."

. . . .whew!!

Yeah, at least Rodgers actually does hat the coach tells him to do, rather than audibling out of every run play. Hmm hmm.
