#PackersDaily: Playmakers wanted

Alabama safety Brian Branch spoke at the Combine today in Indy and confirmed that he's spoken with the Packers. He'd be a nice addition to a Packers secondary in transition. Aaron chats about that and all things Green and Gold.

I don't see Branch solving anything.
When you don't get the ball back, you lose.
Walker got ejected and that was the game.
I would take Nolan Smith before Branch.
Grab a safety later.

Yes, good safeties can be had later, but I would take Mayer.

O line or Edge with the one pick. I like Sydney Brown as the safety. So, they go down the worm hole again with this guy making the picks. Can he trade down to secure another two pick? Will the so-called largesse appear from the proposed "trade" scenarios. Will they move '24 picks to build up the second round? Doubtfull.

It’s not make it, take it. It’s alternating possessions.

I think they'd take Branch in a second. Best DB on the board, regardless of CB or Safety. He is a slot/S and maybe some CB hybrid. Can and did play all over. Great tackler. Exactly what the Packers need on the back end. For Defense, unless it's Tyree Wilson, Myles Murphy, or maybe Isaiah Foskey, Branch is the next best defensive BPA. I don't think they'd take strictly a CB at 15, unless he had versatility to play in the slot or some SS/FS. Branch has that versatility. This allows Jaire and Stokes (when healthy) to stay outside where they are best, and maybe get Rasul a move to more of a Safety role where he can shine as a ball hawk.

Offense at 15 is also possible and maybe more desirable, but none should doubt Branch's BPA value here.

Robinson stands out when watching the Fl State games this past autumn. The other 'Bama safety is a better NFL fit.

Robinson can play either FS /SS
He weighs more.
And He's a better hitter.

Branch will be in the running for rookie Def of the year, and possible Pro-Bowls in his future. His instincts are rare. I do think he will be that good.

Agree, Racingdad. Could also just as easily be OT Paris Johnson Jr. and EDGE Tyree Wilson R1 as the S Branch and the TE Mayer.

In my eyes, another premiere WR talent like Quentin Johnston would be difficult to argue against. Same for EDGE, where we could benefit greatly by adding two players at the position.

S/DB
TE
EDGE
OT
WR

Those appear to be our Top 5 most important positions calling out for top talents.

Can you imagine Watson, Doubs & Johnston 3 wide for the Packers? Jaxson Smith-Njigba, anybody?

I don’t know how the Personnel Department views JSN, but… I’ll never forget seeing WR Justin Jefferson at the combine looking every bit the Ferrari 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxter he was amongst a bunch of Hyundais that day.

JSN just might be -that- guy.

If I had one pick around 15, I’d take Branch.

So Brian, how would you feel about joining a defense with 3 UGA studs?

Damn right he'd make a nice addition....We need a versatile, physical safety who's not going to shy away from contact and can TACKLE. A lot of DBs are grabby in college, so that's not a concern coming out--it'll get fixed.

I'm hoping for either Branch, Mayer, or Skoronski with our first pick--all should be more or less ready to contribute (hopefully).

I like Devon Witherspoon out of Illinois. He's fast, can cover, and he can tackle.

I will say this about playmakers: An awful lot of these "plays" feature a missed tackle that turns a completion into a long gainer. I'd also say that about half of your defenders on the field are DBs , and more than half your plays are passes, so they're in the best position, defensively, to be "playmakers".

Offensively......I'd look for guys who can break tackles. At any position. That seems to be a common denominator.

We need 2-1st rd pks we need branch and Mayer those two change our team in the 2nd either mazi smith or k Benton to help d line than in 3rd best wr or o line and yes their are several good edges later in draft 4th,5th and even later. As far as wr’s their’s still value in fourth or fifth — Wilson, losivis , Higgins , etc

I don't think we're going to have two first round picks. I don't think the Aaron Rodgers trade will take place until after June 1, so any compensation would be applied to the next draft.

We can trade down from #15 and get more picks. In simulations, the Cards are always willing to trade #34, #66, and #96. By the trade value chart, it's a good deal for AZ. Combined with our own picks at #45 and #78, that's five shots in the first 78.

Safety. Edge. WR. TE. OL.

There's a list of every 1st Round TE selection since 2000 floating around the internet right now. A quick scroll through the list should inform pretty quickly that, as much as every draft choice is a bit of a gamble, taking a TE with our first pick is an entirely unnecessary roll of the dice for a team that just finished 8-9.

The 2023 TE class is actually deep. What's the likelihood of finding a Tight End who is a difference-maker in year 1?

Outside of Pitts, Engram, Fant, no 1st round TE has surpassed 500yds as a rookie since Jeremy Shockey in 2002. Not sure what everyone else saw on the field last year, but this doesn't seem like the proper timing for a miss or a draft & develop selection in the first round.
