Packers vs. Dolphins: Offense, Defense & Special Teams

Each phase of the game is previewed from a Packers-perspective as Green Bay prepares to host Miami today at noon CDT in Lambeau Field.

Here's some key aspects to watch for in each phase of the game from a Packers perspective...

  • Getting Greg Jennings involved: So Jennings is frustrated after catching only 14 passes in the first five games of the season. The squeaky wheels get the grease, so expect the Packers to figure out ways to get Jennings the ball. And several of those ways will be near the line of scrimmage with slants and bubble screens, maybe even a reverse. But that and the running game should set up at least one or two long attempts to Jennings as well. With Jermichael Finley out, the Packers have to put the balls into the hands of one of their best playmakers.

  • Generating a pass rush from unlikely sources: Likely without Clay Matthews, the Packers must get a pass rush off the edge. Brad Jones, Frank Zombo and Brady Poppinga will all get a chance, but the best edge rush might come from inside linebacker Desmond Bishop on designed blitzes from the outside. Bishop showed he has some potential to put some pressure on the quarterback last week and defensive coordinator Dom Capers might run with that. Also with Mike Neal probably out as well, it would be very beneficial to the Packers if some combination of C.J. Wilson or Jarius Wynn can show a little pass rush as well.

Special Teams

  • Stepping up: Derrick Martin, one of the best special teams players on the team, is out for the year. Another good "teams" player, Desmond Bishop, is playing a big role on defense and likely will have a diminished role. Several players are going to need to step up and become core special teams players in their place. Who will it be? Sam Shields? Brandon Underwood? Frank Zombo? The opportunity is there.
