Packers trading for Randall Cobb

The former Packers receiver will be joining Aaron Rodgers for The Last Dance in Green Bay.

What Aaron Rodgers wants, Aaron Rodgers gets, apparently.

The oft-repeated rumoured trade for former Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb from the Houston Texans is actually happening

In eight years in Green Bay, Cobb had 470 receptions, tallying 41 touchdowns and 5,524 yards.

If it's cheap (which reportedly he's renegotiating his deal) it's no different than Thanisis on the Bucks. If it's for 8 million and a draft pick higher than 6 then that's BS. Cobb is no worse than ESB, that's who he's pushing out. Let Rodgers have his crumbs so we get a shot at a Super Bowl. It's stupid but not a huge deal.

I wonder if there is an over/under as to when Cobb will be on the IR? My first thought was by game 3 - so your prediction is most optimistic. Actually in this way it may benefit Amari in the long run as he can gradually immerse himself into the NFL game. Still, I expect that he (Rodgers) will be the full time slot receiver for the last half of the season.

JB….I can agree on that. But if he takes a spot away from players who are actually better and ready to start, it’s counterproductive no matter what his cost. he may be a great locker room guy though. But his loyalty to Rodgers may be a water supply already poisoned. Who knows?! This drama has been exhausting. Looking forward to TC.

I think Cobb still has value as a WR as his numbers with Dallas showed. No we really didnt need him but he's making us better because he's helping bring our starting QB back in the fold. My guess is he will bump ESB and or Funchess for a spot, maybe a TE instead but the cost to keep our QB happy is small. This could have ended worse for us.

Good move Amari will learn from him , I understand they are friends Cobb is still young, I expect Amari to return punts maybe be the jet sweep guy as he learns the slot , I think the offense has all the necessary tools but as usual we will keep our fingers crossed for the defense and special teams.

In reality, the cost of this trade is going to define whether this is a good trade or not. Cobb’s current cap number is about $7.5M.

As much as I loved seeing Randall Cobb when he was a Packer, I’m not sure how well he will fit with the current roster (financials included).

I completely agree with this Lphill... IMO this can't possibly make the Packers any worse, it makes them better. What an EXCELLENT player for Amari Rodgers to learn the slot position IN the NFL from. Amari Rodgers was my favorite draft pick from 2021 and I still think he gets plenty of playing time, BUT is eased in.

I'll tell you this, I wish we had Cobb in the NFCCG when it was 1st and goal from the 8 yard line. Like Davante, Rodgers KNOWS what Cobb might do and where he'll be when a play breaks down.

Not only this, Cobb played MUCH better the last 2 years. He was finally healthy for the most part. What do you know, Cobb gets away from McCarthy and stays healthy. McCarthy goes to Dallas last year and the Cowboys are decimated with injuries. After years of injuries under MM and less under MLF it's not just luck.

There's also Cobb and Amari Rodgers KNOW each other.

UGHHH..

No. Just no! BuT tHe Qb WaNtS iT!!!

Cobb was old and bad by the time we let him go. He had been old and bad since as early as 2015. He's small. He's slow. He's injury prone. He's expensive. All this does is takes snaps away from a young player who will grow. ESPECIALLY Amari. But other than that, this is great.

Don't cater to players, Gute. We don't have the cap room.

You need to catch up. The Cowboys let him walk. Houston gave him a HUGE deal last year to be receiver #1 and he underperformed it in a big way.

$18M guaranteed and $5 Mil bonus. No wonder they are happy to unload him to the Pack. 38 passes, 2 starts and 10 games?

Cobb more than doubled his production two years ago with DAL. 828 yds on 55 rec, for 15.1 avg. and 41 1Ds. Last year in HOU he wasn't used much, but still earned a 125.9 rating when thrown to. He's a reliable vet, who knows Rodgers very well. This could be good. Unexpected, and unsure of the value yet, but it could work. Maybe they rework his deal after he gets back to GB.

One criticism of Cobb in his last year at GB was that (along with Jordy and Adams) he couldn’t get separation - he could run his routes crisply and make his catches, but he certainly wasn’t a YAC monster.

Just thinking about how Cobb is likely to be used in a MLF offense, I think that he’s going to be called on to run crisp routes and help attack the seam.

That said, It’s going to be a pretty crowded part of the field - with MLF’s proclivity for crossing routes, motions and use of RB’s and TE’s in that space too.

I really like Randall. Always have. He is like have a player coach on the team. Big Football IQ. I recall Rodgers once said Kuhn knew as much about the O as he did....and Randall was right there with them both.

But what is a bit concerning is after Hapless Houston signed him to 3 years, $27 mil, $5 mil signing bonus, and $18 mil guaranteed he started 2 games, played in 10, and caught just 38 passes as a supposed feature receiver.

The size of the deal will tell the tale. Davante will be watching.

I have seen no verified details on the deal yet. I would be shocked it Houston ate most the the deal. If they did, wow...they really want Cobb gone...after one year! Talk about buyers remorse.

And trading for A. Miller maybe they do see his skills on waterpark slide.

Glass half full...getting Cobb back to GB may be a transition into a coaching role, where I think he would excel.

AR really takes this "trust" thing seriously, doesn't he? Time moves forward, players move on and are replaced by younger ones--but since our QB doesn't buy into this concept, we're going back to the distant past. What about Amari? Does this mean he's going to be used as sparingly as Dillon was last season?

I wouldn't have given in to this whim, urge, or whatever you want to call it....Maybe if it was a player in his prime or a big upgrade at another position it would be one thing, but this doesn't seem to be something that moves the franchise forward at all.

It's simply placating and giving "no leverage" Rodgers two fig leafs. So a void year and a roster spot for a buddy player with no more money beyond 2022 for #12?

It took him 4 months to twist and deep dive into his mental health for this?

Ok!

The WR room will have Adams, MVS, Lazard, Amari, and Cobb. All the other guys will have a few making the PC. Cobb ensures Funchess is likely gone. Sure cannot cut Cobb now!

They will only keep 5 I think given the loaded rooms across the hall in the RB and TE rooms and more 12 & 22 personnel on the field going forward requiring only 2 or one WR.

That's a happy narrative and fantasy. You really think Amari is going to be happy riding the pine behind a 31 year old who is playing because of his bromance with #12? If he is, Amari is kind of a coaster, coupon clipper.

Everything I have read about Amari is he is incredibly competitive and Cobb better bring the A game he has not seen for a few years.

Just a thought...can you imagine if Gutey, on cut down day, whacks Cobb in favor of ESB or Funchess or Gaithers?

That would shove a thorn into the arse of QB 1! it would certainly show who is boss of the roster.

Hey, LambeauPlain,

Cobb is Amari’s friend and mentor, and he has been much of Amari’s life. This will be fine. One year with Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams & Randall Cobb back together for a title run. We’ll see. This could be good.

I would imagine Amari is excited about a Cobb trade. Should make for one special year.

I know the back story. Do you think Tonyan was "happy" watching a declining Graham take his snaps?

My point is simple...the best player plays. And if Cobb takes snaps just to placate #12, that is malfeasance by a HC. If Cobb is the better player, fine. He needs to play far better than last year or Amari needs to flop...which he won't.

According reports, Rodgers was incredibly frustrated sitting behind Favre and often voiced this to the FO. Finally agreed with him in 2008.

I'm not crazy about it but I'll wait to see the terms of the trade before getting too excited. Maybe the Packers won't give up much and can get Houston to eat some of his salary. Cobb in the WR room will be like another coach, and he'll be a great mentor for Amari Rodgers as well as those other young receivers.

I didn't see him with Houston, but I thought he looked solid with Dallas the previous year. Sure, he doesn't have the jets any more. But he'll be reliable and won't complain about lack of reps and touches.

Bringing Cobb back can pay dividends for Amari Rodgers and the Packers offense for years to come. Cobb will be a mentor to Amari Rodgers and have him ready to fulfill his role with Jordan Love who now has another season to learn from Rodgers. Getting Rodgers in sync with Love from the beginning can be a huge factor for Love having some early success when he takes over.

I see Cobb getting the majority of reps early in the season and Amari Rodgers getting increasing number of reps as the season goes on. No doubt Cobb's best games are behind him but he can still contribute both on and off the field. Thanks, Since '61

Sure, whatever. This will not help Amari's development given his already polished skill set. Assuming Cobb plays why Amari sits is probably unrealistic to his growth. Some players yes...skill players like Amari, I think not.

Cobb gets hurt a lot.

Cobb is now slower than Amari.

Amari can play more roles. Cobb's role is the slot now, oft injured at that.

I feel confident Matt wants to win and if that means Cobb is a back up after Amari beats him out, Cobb is a back up buddy for the fragile QB. How much the babysitter costs will be interesting. But that is water over the waterfall. Can't get it back.

I like Randall. He's 31 and not very productive with his injury history. A good teammate though. If a void year and Randall is all it took to get the talented Dive back, small price.

Yeah, this is pretty bad. Waiting for the details on the trade compensation and money, but Cobb had $8.25M guaranteed in base salary alone for this year, so unless Cobb is chasing a ring, the most I'd expect is the money gets divvied up differently. $8M is about 150% of what I think Cobb is worth.

This isn't where GB should be expending its resources. Stephen Nelson who just signed for under $5M would have been a better idea. A defensive lineman would be a better idea. An ILB who doesn't stink would be a better idea.

Yes, Cobb overall probably can help this team as a PR and even as a WR, at least for 2021. I noted Cobb's 9.2 yards/target average last season - that's very good but the volume was somewhat lacking. Just 45 yards per game, IIRC.

What about 2022? What's the plan? I am not going to utterly condemn this move until I see the details. Probably a foregone conclusion, but maybe Cobb is coming for a ring.

Edit: I suppose this is what going "all-in" looks like, something I've advocated for. I just am not persuaded that this is the right way to go all in.

OK, maybe ARod "won" the part about bringing Cobb back. But overall I see this as more of a win for the team than the player. Obviously we haven't seen the details yet, but I suspect that the agreement will be pretty much what the front office has intended all along.

Frankly, the part that ARod "won" - the part about bringing Cobb back - is the only part that I'm really unsatisfied with.

So this is the self-appointed G.M., A. Rodgers, vision of how to improve the team? By bringing back an oft-injured personal chum - well past his best before date - to a position of lower priority? Meanwhile the d-line is begging for an upgrade. Just think how Cobb's purported salary could be invested in the d-line.

Nor can I blame the FO for this concession. Ultimately they safeguarded the long term interests of the team. So if Linus can have his blanket - why shouldn't Rodgers have his (Randall Cobb)?

Actually it is just a minor concession that ensured the most ideal scenario for the team, i.e., Rodgers as QB for 2021 - giving Love a valuable year for development - trade Rodgers after the season for significant assets - with Love as the starter (hopefully) in 2022. Also in doing so, the FO has prevented any further distractions or disruptions for training camp. I say a nice bit of management from the FO.

Whatever. Too early to judge whether Cobb is washed up like many here claim. It takes a thrower and a receiver to get a reception and if the thrower is convinced his receiver helps him, then its pretty reasonable to consider it. If Rodgers/Cobb is anything like Rodgers/Adams, and in fact we have both options for when Rodgers is under pressure, heck that is pretty ok. Maybe Cobb's not that fast but the opposing defense can't defend mustang Marques. asteroid Amari, daft Davante and the cunning cobb. Throw in a tuned Tonyan. They would have to have a deep CB core.

I respect Cobb as a player and former Packer and now possibly a born again Packer but this just doesn't sit well with me. This is obviously a play to placate Rodgers. Players dictating personnel decisions, particularly for the short term, is just a bad idea. Now Rodgers has roster input. My question for those whom favor this move, if the Cobb acquisition proves to be a mistake, is it then fair to hold Rodgers accountable for the roster move? Or will you blame Gute??

Let me reiterate this: Rodgers basically ignored Cobb, who was frequently open, for the last two years of CObb's time with the Packers.

The story was "Cobb couldn't get separation". That was an outright lie. The truth was, Cobb was frequently open, and Rodgers looked the other way because he wanted to wait for Adams or Nelson to come free deep.

Now he has to have Cobb back. Players should play. Coaches should coach. and GMs should make personnel decisions.

Why are we wasting time or $ bringing an aging declining receiver back into the fold. We drafted a younger version and at this point probably 3x better at same position in Amari Rodgers. Arod from my viewpoint appears to be one of the worst talent evaluators I have seen. Upset that we let "White Jesus" Kumerow go who has been cut by multiple teams and upset we let Cobb go at precisely the right time. I loved Jordy but he wasn't the same guy after the injury. Arod appears to be an arm chair fantasy GM when it comes to realizing good talent, keep the guys you like sans productivity. The roster that Gute has put together is the best and deepest at all levels since our 2010 SB winning team. Rodgers has more than enough talent around him to win. He is 1-4 in NFC title games and has not played above a good level in any one of them. He needs to take a hard look in the mirror. I have been a huge fan of his but he has gotten a little full of himself, if he had Favre or Brady's attitude this team would be a lot better off. I for one would have pursued a trade with Las Vegas for 2 future first and Carr as a perfect bridge QB for the next 2 years, with this roster we would be a top end NFC contender with him at QB.

This is BS. Since when do players get to dictate player acquisitions? Cobb is 31 years old and can still play but if I remember right, he spent a lot of time hurt. Now we have a very promising Amari Rodgers taking a backseat to Cobb and at what cost? I believe Rodgers is going to be better than Cobb. He seems to be built a lot sturdier than Mr. Fragile and has all the elements of being a great slot receiver! Not sure I like Mr. Rodgers neighborhood anymore. Effing prima donna with his slicked backed Hollywood long hair and shades.....

In ML's offense, AR got a new lease on life. (OK, AR is great, but he rose up even higher in ML's offense).

Who is to say that Cobb will not rise to similar heights? Play-action, misdirection, motion-out-of-the-backfield... I would imagine that works to Cobb's strengths, and we may very well see the impact.

This is not as bad an idea as most seem to think. Remember last year when Swervin Ervin got injured? The jet sweep and jet sweep motion went missing, or at least lost a lot of its effectiveness. At least now they have two legitimate candidates for those reps should injury occur. Also, Cobb and Amari are tight, so this is an ideal situation for mentoring. As polished as some think Amari is, he is still a rookie, and will benefit greatly from a friend/mentor who's been around for as long as Cobb.

As far as this being an ideal roster move, it's way, WAY better than bringing in a couple of old dilapidated TEnds paste their prime. See Bennett, Martelus; Graham, Jimmy.

Read a few stories about Cobb. All the reporters said Cobb has lost a step. Remember that Cobb went to Dallas with Mike McCarthy and his system. The Cowpokes didn't want to keep him. Hmmmmmm.

So are Aaron's friends more important than the overall team?

Is Jake Kumerow coming back too? No one else seemed to like him. Aaron thought he was All-World.

Could AR's lovefest turn into a Packers demise?

Stay tuned.
